Areal average rainfall estimation method using multiple elevation data of an electromagnetic wave rain gauge (전파강수계의 다중 고도각 자료를 이용한 면적 평균 강우 추정 기법)

  • In order to predict and prevent hydrological disasters such as flood, it is necessary to accurately estimate rainfall. In this paper, an areal average rainfall estimation method using multiple elevation observation data of an electromagnetic wave rain gauge is presented. The small electromagnetic rain gauge system is a very small precipitation radar that operates at K-band with dual-polarization technology for very short distance observation. The areal average rainfall estimation method is based on the assumption that the variation in rainfall over the observation range is small because the observation distance and time are very short. The proposed method has been evaluated by comparing with ground instruments such as tipping-bucket rain gauges and a Parsivel. The evaluation results show that the methodology works fairly well for the rainfall events which are shown here.

Design of Multiple Filter for Reducing Received Signal Fluctuation in FMCW Radar Altimeter (FMCW 방식의 전파 고도계에서 수신 신호 요동에 대한 영향을 감소하기 위한 다중 필터의 설계)

  • This paper proposes a multiple filter for reduction of received signal fluctuation and enhancement of step altitude edge detection in FMCW radar altimeter. The proposed filter was composed of alpha-trimmed mean filter, frequency variation limiter, and 1/3 order static filter. Simulations by analysis of received signal show that the proposed filter provides better performance than moving average and standard median filters with error reduction. In particular, the proposed filter was improved in the ability of reducing fluctuation for ground hovering.

  • Big swell is often generated offshore and damages the coasts after travelling long distance. In order to prevent coastal damages, wave measurements should be performed offshore as well as coastal waters around Korea. However, in-situ wave measurements are difficult because of high expense of instruments and high risk of operation. Satellite wave measurements using altimeter make it possible to get wave information from the sea difficult to execute field measurements such as the center of the East Sea or exclusive territorial waters. In order to use wave information from the satellite altimeter, it is important to verify altimeter wave data with in-situ data. This paper examines significant wave height data observed by ENVISAT altimeter by comparing wave data observed at Ieodo station.

Improving GPS Vertical Error Using Barometric Altimeter (기압 고도계를 이용한 GPS 수직오차 개선)

  • Accuracy of GPS (global positioning system) deteriorates dramatically or positioning is impossible in urban area occasionally since high-rise buildings and elevated roads make the reception of navigation signal very difficult so that number of visible satellites decreases. In these cases, vertical error usually becomes much larger than the horizontal error due to the intrinsic geometry of GPS satellites. To obtain more accurate and reliable height information, this paper proposes a hybrid method that combines GPS and a low-cost barometric altimeter. In the proposed method, the sea-level pressure and the sea-surface temperature are applied to the output of the altimeter. Next, the difference between the ellipsoid and the geoid is compensated. Finally, a simple Kalman filter combines the compensated barometric altitude and the GPS height. By static and car experiments, performance of the proposed method is evaluated. By the experiment results, it can be seen that the proposed method improves the altitude accuracy considerably.

  • Many researches on use of local ground navigation systems can be found to overcome vulnerability of GNSS. Effective use of an altimeter is proposed in GNSS/DME integrated navigation systems. A weighted DOP based on statistics of measurement error is derived for a given vehicle motion trajectory. From the derived DOP, the vertical error is estimated. By comparing the estimated vertical error with error specification of the altimeter, use of the altimeter is determined in the GPS/DME integrated navigation systems. In order to show effectiveness of the proposed method, 50 times Monte-Carlo simulations were performed for a GPS/DME integrated navigation system. The results show that the proposed method gives more accurate navigation outputs when the number of GPS satellites in view varies.

  • The process and results of Captive Flight Test(CFT), conducted by Agency for Defense Development(ADD) using the Korean KTX-1 trainer and external fuel tank, are presented. Through over 150 sorties of CFT, the guided weapon system's critical subsystems like Seeker, Navigation Device and Technology, Inertial Sensor, and Radio Altimeter are tested and evaluated. Using the CFT, time and cost are saved in weapon system research and development procedure.

  • IMT-2000 will provide worldwide mobile telecommunication services with the extended coverage areas such as polar regions and mountainous district. GMPCS also provides global telephony and paging services via satellite network at the altitude of 500~12,000 km. "Big LEO" which is one of the GMPCS systems using frequency above 1 GHz and IMT-2000 will share the frequency range of 1 to 3 GHz. Therefore, there exists possible interference between the two systems which can cause the performance degradation of both systems. In this paper, the radio-propagation modeling and interference analysis methods are presented and these methods are used to analyse the effect of the interference between IMT-2000 and GMPCS on system performance.rformance.

  • 1973년 최초로 서비스를 시작한 GPS는 전 세계 60억명 이상이 사용 중이며 거의 모든 사업에 큰 영향을 미치고 있으며, 자동차, 농업, 해양, 일반 안전, 레저활동, 지형공간정보, 항공, 금융, 통신 등 산업 전반에 걸쳐 경제적 이익이 약 1조4천억 달러에 이르는 글로벌 시스템이라 할 수 있다. 최근에는 미국의 GPS 뿐만 아니라 유럽, 러시아, 중국 등 세계 주요국들은 자국의 독자 위성항법시스템을 구축하고 있으며, PNT 정밀성 향상을 위한 위성항법보강시스템의 개발 또한 주요국 중심으로 이루어지고 있다. 4차산업기술의 발달로 인해 다양한 산업의 상용화와 대중화에 따라 PNT 정보의 고정밀, 고신뢰에 대한 수요도 급증하고 있으며, 이에 대한 응용기술 분야에 대한 시장도 급속하게 성장하고 있다. 우리나라에서도 KASS와 같은 위성항법보강시스템 구축을 추진하고 있으며, 향후 독자 위성항법시스템인 KPS의 개발도 진행중에 있다. 그러나 고도 23,000km에서 송출하는 위성신호의 전파교란·기만에 대한 취약성과, 도심지와 같은 위성신호 수신이 열악한 환경에서는 고정밀·고신뢰 PNT 정보를 제공하기가 현실적으로 어려운 실정이다. 이러한 GPS의 취약성을 보완하기 위해 지상기반의 PNT 정보제공 시스템 구축의 필요성이 증대되고 있으며, 전세계적으로 상호보완적 PNT 시스템의 구축·기술개발에 대한 연구가 다양하게 이루어지고 있다.

Development of Gravity Gradient Referenced Navigation and its Horizontal Accuracy Analysis (중력구배기반 항법 구현 및 수평위치 정확도 분석)

  • Recently, researches on DBRN(DataBase Referenced Navigation) system are being carried out to replace GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System), as weaknesses of GNSS were found that are caused by the intentional interference and the jamming of the satellite signal. This paper describes the gravity gradient modeling and the construction of EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) based GGRN(Gravity Gradient Referenced Navigation). To analyze the performance of GGRN, fourteen flight trajectories were made for simulations over whole South Korea. During the simulations, we considered the errors in both DB(DataBase) and sensor as well as the flight altitudes. Accurate performances were found, when errors in the DB and the sensor are small and they located at lower altitude. For comparative evaluation, the traditional TRN(Terrain Referenced Navigation) was also developed and performances were analyzed relative to those from the GGRN. In fact, most of GGRN performed better in low altitude, but both of precise gravity gradient DB and gradiometer were required to obtain similar level of precisions at the high altitude. In the future, additional tests and evaluations on the GGRN need to be performed to investigate on more factors such as DB resolution, flight speed, and the update rate.

Statistical Characteristics of East Sea Mesoscale Eddies Detected, Tracked, and Grouped Using Satellite Altimeter Data from 1993 to 2017 (인공위성 고도계 자료(1993-2017년)를 이용하여 탐지‧추적‧분류한 동해 중규모 소용돌이의 통계적 특성)

  • Energetic mesoscale eddies in the East Sea (ES) associated with strong mesoscale variability impacting circulation and environments were statistically characterized by analyzing satellite altimeter data collected during 1993-2017 and in-situ data obtained from four cruises conducted between 2015 and 2017. A total of 1,008 mesoscale eddies were detected, tracked, and identified and then classified into 27 groups characterized by mean lifetime (L, day), amplitude (H, m), radius (R, km), intensity per unit area (EI, $cm^2/s^2/km^2$), ellipticity (e), eddy kinetic energy (EKE, TJ), available potential energy (APE, TJ), and direction of movement. The center, boundary, and amplitude of mesoscale eddies identified from satellite altimeter data were compared to those from the in-situ observational data for the four cases, yielding uncertainties in the center position of 2-10 km, boundary position of 10-20 km, and amplitude of 0.6-5.9 cm. The mean L, H, R, EI, e, EKE, and APE of the ES mesoscale eddies during the total period are $95{\pm}104$ days, $3.5{\pm}1.5cm$, $39{\pm}6km$, $0.023{\pm}0.017cm^2/s^2/km^2$, $0.72{\pm}0.07$, $23{\pm}21TJ$, and $588{\pm}250TJ$, respectively. The ES mesoscale eddies tend to move following the mean surface current rather than propagating westward. The southern groups (south of the subpolar front) have a longer L, larger H, R, and higher EKE, APE; and stronger EI than those of the northern groups and tend to move a longer distance following surface currents. There are exceptions to the average characteristics, such as the quasi-stationary groups (the Wonsan Warm, Wonsan Cold, Western Japan Basin Warm, and Northern Subpolar Frontal Cold Eddy groups) and short-lived groups with a relatively larger H, higher EKE, and APE and stronger EI (the Yamato Coastal Warm, Central Yamato Warm, and Eastern Japan Basin Coastal Warm eddy groups). Small eddies in the northern ES hardly resolved using the satellite altimetry data only, were not identified here and discussed with potential over-estimations of the mean L, H, R, EI, EKE, and APE. This study suggests that the ES mesoscale eddies 1) include newly identified groups such as the Hokkaido and the Yamato Rise Warm Eddies in addition to relatively well-known groups (e.g., the Ulleung Warm and the Dok Cold Eddies); 2) have a shorter L; smaller H, R, and lower EKE; and stronger EI and higher APE than those of the global ocean, and move following surface currents rather than propagating westward; and 3) show large spatial inhomogeneity among groups.
