  • This study was to inquire the effectiveness of concept mapping on the learning of biology concept. In this study the achivement acquired by the students in the classes of individual concept mapping and cooperative concept mapping were compared with those of traditional lecture on "photosynthesis and plant respiration". The concept mapping teaching methods, by individuals and groups. were more effective than traditional one. The results of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that these difference were statistically significant; individual concept mapping was more effective than traditional class result(p<.008). Also the cooperative concept mapping was effective than traditional class result(p<.0001). And the cooperative concept mapping was more effective than the individual one(p<.04). So that cooperative concept mapping is the most effective method in biology class.

  • Although many studies have investigated the effectiveness of concept mapping and the learning cycle, in Korea none have explored the effectiveness of concept mapping and the learning cycle combined. This study explored the effectiveness of concept mapping, the learning cycle, and a combination of concept mapping/learning cycle(CL) in high school biology class. Students' science achievement, the science related attitudes and scientific inquiry ability was measured. The results indicated that concept mapping, the learning cycle, and CL treatment were significantly different from the traditional one in science achievement(p< .05). However, the three treatments were not significantly different from each other. No significant difference exists among different learnings in high and average-ability students. But, concept mapping was the most effective in low-ability students. For the students' scientific inquiry ability, CL and learning cycle were more effective than concept mapping and traditional learning. No significant difference exists among different learnings in high-ability students. CL and learning cycle were more effective than concept mapping and traditional learning in average and low-ability students. For the students' science related attitudes, concept mapping, the learning cycle, and CL were more effective than the traditional learning. But, there was no significant difference among these three groups.

  • The researches related to students' preconceptions and conceptual change model have been reported that students' learning motivation is one of the key variable for the conceptual change. The effects of students learning motivations on conceptual changes were evaluated. Subjects of this study were 8th grade students. and they were divided into 2 groups. One group was taught by traditional teaching method, and the other group by concept change teaching model. After the intervention, learning motivations of the students were testified. The students of high motivation who were taught by concept change teaching model showed higher scores in the concept of chemical change than the students by traditional teaching method. But there was no difference in both groups of students who have low learning motivations. The learning motivations before the intervention. the motivations stimulated by classes. and the degree of concept understanding showed high correlation. The motivations stimulated by classes explain 23.3 % of the degree of concept understanding. The results seems to mean that students learning motivations contribute to the understanding of concepts. Especially confidence of learning as a subcategory of the learning motivation contributes significantly to the understanding of new concepts. In contrast, the traditional teaching methods and the teaching methods of concept change learning theory were not effective for the stimulation of students learning motivations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to create an inter-religious dialogue between the Western Christian concept of the spirit and Eastern ch'i philosophy within the category of panentheism. The Hebrew term ruah means 'moving air' and 'wind' which derive from the particular experience of the ancient Hebrew people living in the desert. The Greek pnuema also means 'life' and 'wind' which denote the natural power. Both ruah and pneuma consist of the main idea of the spirit exploring the symbol of relationality of the divine in Western tradition. Eastern ch'i philosophy indicates a vital force for keeping the body and soul alive, which is unconscious and spontaneous. Ch'i as a vital force constitutes cosmogony and cosmology with the constant movement of yin and yang. Yin and Yang as representing earth and heaven are dynamic breaths, blending harmoniously to become all existence. The ethical implication of the inter-religious dialogue between the spirit and ch'i would be the integration and interconnection of heaven, earth, and human beings. The dialogue suggests becoming one body with nature and human community through embodying the non-dualistic spirit of life. The inter-relationality means that since all modalities of existence are made of the cosmic life, human beings are part of the divine cosmic process. This is related to degree of spirituality in the entire chain of being: rocks, trees, animals, humans, and goods represent different levels of spirituality based on the varying composition of the spirit and ch'i. All beings that internally embody with the spirit and ch'i are organically inter-connected, and they are integral part of a continuous process of transformation of life towards holistic liberation of human and nature community.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the effects of the Science Conceptual Model Completion Activity and Science Conceptual Model Modifying Activity on middle-school students' achievement in science conceptual learning, and to analyze if there are any correlations among their achievements by purposed activities, their cognitive level and school science achievement. For the study, 112 middle school students were sampled for three groups, which are two experimental groups (Model Completion activity group, Model Modifying Activity group) and one control group. Pre- and post-tests were taken to measure the students' achievement in science concepts, and the logical thinking ability test was administered after the implementation period. In addition, their school science achievements were analyzed. The research findings are as follows: First, the Science Conceptual Model Completion activity is more effective for middle school students' science conceptual learning than the Science Conceptual Model Modifying activity or conventional activity. Second, higher school science achievement also results in higher achievement of science concepts through the Conceptual Model Modifying activity or the Conceptual Model Completion activity. Lastly, the Conceptual Model Completion activity is more effective for the concrete operational level students to attain science concepts than formal operational level ones. Meanwhile, on the contrary, the Conceptual Model Modifying activity is more effective for formal operational level students than the concrete operational level ones.
