Diagnosis of Early Dental Caries with Dye-Enhancing Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence (QLF) (정량 광유도 형광법(QLF)과 광활성제를 이용한 초기 치아우식증의 진단)

  • This study used sodium fluorescein to improve imaging diagnostic ability by increasing the fluorescence difference between sound enamel and caries lesions. It also made it easier to discriminate between stain and caries lesions using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF). Half of the specimen surface was covered with nail varnish as a control. Specimens were divided randomly in six decalcification groups and decalcified for different lengths of time. Then, ${\Delta}F$ was measured using QLF-D. After applying 0.075% sodium fluorescein, we measured ${\Delta}F$ again and compared it with the initial value. After cutting the central portion of the specimen, we measured the lesion depth using scanning electron microscopy. The lesion surfaces observed with QLF were darker than normal enamel, whereas they were lighter than normal enamel after applying fluorescein. Longer decalcification time was associated with greater fluorescent dye penetration. The ${\Delta}F$ measured after applying fluorescein was higher than the initial value (p < 0.05). Due to QLF measurement using fluorescein being more sensitive for diagnosing early decalcification, this approach will enable early diagnosis of dental caries before the cavity formation stage, allowing the treatment of early caries lesions. With QLF and sodium fluorescein, we can easily discriminate between stain and caries lesions.

Examination of the Characteristics of Mortar Mixed with Boron Compounds Presenting Various Levels of Alkalinity (다양한 알칼리도를 가진 붕소화합물이 혼입된 모르타르의 특성 검토)

  • This study examines the characteristics of mortar mixed with various boron compounds. The adapted boron compounds, classified into acid, slightly alkaline and strongly alkaline with respect to the value of the pH are acid-based boron (AA), low-alkaline-based boron (AB), and high-alkaline-based boron (HB). The pH test, setting test and compressive strength test are performed to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of mortar, and SEM imaging is conducted to analyze the microstructure of mortar. The measured pH shows that the specimens mixed with boron compounds have lower pH than the basic mortar without boron and that loss of pH occurs according to time. The setting test reveals that the initial and final setting times of the specimens mixed with boron compounds occur later than the basic mortar, which disagrees slightly with the previous literature stating that the setting time can be shortened according to the alkalinity. From the compressive strength test and SEM imaging results, it is recommended to determine the optimal content of boron considering type and composition of the boron compounds.

Clinicopathologic features of Acute Interstitial Pneumonia (급성 간질성 폐렴의 임상적 고찰)

  • Background: Acute interstitial pneumonia is a relatively rare form of interstitial pneumonia, since the vast majority of interstitial pneumonia have a more chronic course. It corresponds to the lesion described by Hamman and Rich, as Hamman-Rich disease in 1944. Another name in the clinical literature is accelerated interstitial pneumonia, idiopathic acute respiratory distress syndrome (idiopathic ARDS), and the organizing stage of diffuse alveolar damage. Acute interstitial pneumonia differs from chronic interstitial pneumonia by clinical and pathologic features. Clinically, this disease is characterized by a sudden onset and a rapid course, and reversible disease. Method and Purpose: Five cases of pathologically proven acute interstitial pneumonia were retrospectively studied to define the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features. Results: 1) The five cases ranged in age from 31 to 77 years old. The onset of illness was acute in all patients, it began with viral-like prodrome 6~40 days prior to shortness of breath, and respiratory failure eventually developed in all patients. In 2 cases, generalized skin rash was accompanied with flu-like symptoms. Etiologic agent could not be identified in any case. 2) All patients had leukocytosis and severe hypoxemia. Pulmonary function test of 3 available cases shows restrictive ventilatory defect, and one survived patient(case 5) has a complete improvement of pulmonary function after dismissal. 3) Diffuse bilateral chest infiltrates were present radiologically. Theses were the ground-glass, consolidation, and reticular densities without honeycomb fibrosis in all patients. The pathologic abnormalities were the presence of increased numbers of macrophages and the formation of hyaline membranes within alveolar spaces. There was also interstitial thickening with edema, proliferation of immature fibroblast, and hyperplasia of type II pneumocyte. In the survived patient(case5), pathologic findings were relatively early stage of acute interstitial pneumonia, such as hyaline membrane with mild interstitial fibrosis. 4) Of the 5 patients, four patients died of respiratory failure 14~90 days after onset of first symptom, and one survived and recovered in symptoms, chest X ray, and pulmonary function test Conclusion: These results emphasize that acute interstitial pneumonia is clinically, radiologically, and pathologically distinct form of interstitial pneumonia and should be separated from the group of chronic interstitial pneumonia. Further studies will be needed to evaluate the pathogenesis and the treatment of acute interstitial pneumonia.

The development of baked kelp snack through examining its physicochemical properties (물리화학적 특성 연구를 통한 구운 다시마 스낵 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a kelp (Laminaria japonica) product with optimal sensory and nutritional properties for eating as a snack by investigating its physicochemical properties and conducting sensory evaluation. A preliminary study using tripolypolyphosphate solution found that it was good for removing the fishy smell and for making it soft. We soaked the kelp in 0.3-0.4% sodium tripolyphosphate buffer and tested with or without baking. In searching for the optimal polyphosphate dilution concentration, soaking in 0.3-0.4% sodium tripolyphosphate resulted in the best texture and flavor. As kelp separates into thick or thin samples, thick kelp was best when soaked in 0.4% sodium tripolyphosphate buffer and thin soaked in 0.3%. The kelp snack made from the thick one (over 221 mm thickness) was better than the thin one. Baking improved the moisture, texture and feel of the kelp snack. Tripolyphosphate treatment affected protein contents and texture softening. The differences by baking and tripolyphosphate treatment were shown with electromicroscopic image. Kelp snacks with added sweet and hot taste were preferred to sour taste. In conclusion, in making kelp snacks, it is advisable to use a thick kelp, 0.3-0.4% sodium tripolyphosphate, and baking treatment for better texture and feel. This kelp snack has low fishy smell, better taste and soft feel. Further research is needed to support sea food's importance, and usefulness of the kelp snack to help prevent goiter in inland province citizens.

Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oils from Mentha arvensis L. var. piperascens Malivaud and Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze on Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium (대장균과 살모넬라균에 대한 박하와 배초향 정유성분의 항균활성)

  • For developing natural presevatives, essential oils of Mentha arvensis L. var. piperascens Malivaud and Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze were analyzed the composition of two oils and experimented on microorganism survival. Main components of Mentha arvensis oil were isomenthol (26.84%) and menthol (25.48%), and those of Agastache rugosa oil were estragole (79.83%) and limonene (4.13%) from GC-MSD analysis. Inhibition activities of Mentha arvensis oil against growth of Escherichia coli O157 : H7 ATCC 43895 and Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 7988 were observed from their clear zone $(9{\sim}14 mm\;&\;9{\sim}13\;mm)$, and that of Agastache rugosa oil were done from the clear zone $(13{\sim}20 mm\;&\;10{\sim}18\;mm)$ by concentration-dependent manner, respectively. In the inhibition test on CFU/ml of the microorganisms, both of the plant essential oils at concentration of 5 and 10 mg showed potent growth inhibition activities from 9 hour of incubation. Analysis using transmission electron microscope on E. coli also showed antimicrobial activities of the oils as deformation of the cell and loss of the intracellular materials.

Measurement Algorithms of Sizing removed state using Image Process And Development of Carbon fibers with Electromagnetic shielding Performance (영상처리를 이용한 사이징 제거 상태 측정 알고리즘과 전자파 차폐 성능을 갖는 탄소 섬유 개발)

  • In this paper, the sizing removal condition for the pretreatment of composite materials is obtained numerically by applying an image processing algorithm and nickel-plated carbon fiber is fabricated by a dry process method to enhance its electromagnetic shielding performance. Sizings that are wrapped in a polymer type material during the manufacturing of carbon fiber should be removed for dry coating. A numerical value, that is the correlation, can be obtained by determining the regular pattern of the carbon fiber in the image taken by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) after the sizing is removed. The application of the proposed numerical method to the SEM image of the fiber after the sizing is removed with solution, compressed air, solution and compressed air (hybrid), showed that this method of eliminating the sizing is superior to the hybrid method. Then, by spreading the carbon fiber roll with the sizing removed, we were able to produce nickel plated carbon fiber by the roll-to-roll sputtering method. The electromagnetic shielding performance of the fabricated 30, 40 and 100 nickel coated carbon fibers was measured. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology evaluated the electromagnetic shielding performance of the 100 nickel-coated carbon fiber to have a maximum value of 73.2 (dB) and a minimum value of 66.7 (dB). This is similar to the electromagnetic shielding rate of copper and shows that this material can be used as a cable for EV / HEV automobiles.

Effects of process parameters on encapsulations of BSA aqueous solutions into PLGA microcapsule particles using double emulsion technique (이중유화법을 통하여 BSA 수용액을 PLGA 마이크로캡슐 입자에 봉입하는 과정에서의 공정변수의 영향)

  • PLGA microcapsule particles encapsulating BSA aqueous solutions were prepared using a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion method. The morphology, particle size, BSA encapsulating efficiency, and in-vitro release test were also studied using the microcapsule particles. In the outer aqueous phase, an emulsifier, e.g., PVA, was replaced with metal salts for surface solidification. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the microcapsule particles had smooth surfaces and were between $1{\mu}m$ and $7{\mu}m$ in size. The microcapsule particle morphology was affected directly by the ratio between the polymer solution and inner aqueous solution, and composition of the outer aqueous solution. The factors also partially affected the BSA encapsulation efficiencies and in-vitro release rates. All the microcapsule particles showed an initial burst release through the in-vitro release test. On the other hand, the particles also showed a relatively long release period. Metal salts could be good choices to replace the emulsifier to solidify the microcapsule particle surfaces.

  • To analyze the photodegradation mechanism of materials for fisheries facilities which stand for considerable time immediately under or even partly above the water surface, such as cage collar, cage net, stationary fishing gear, egc. after 900 hours exposure, weathering experiments on 3 kinds of netting twines like dyed polyethylene(PE) and nylon, and non-treated high strength PE(Hi-PE) were carried out by using xenon light source. The results obtained are as follows : It was observed by scanning electron micrograph(SEM) that a good protection by pigments was obtained in PE and nylon specimen, while crack was rapidly progressed at the surface of Hi-PE one owing to etching by UVR. There was a little increase in density resulting from reorientation of polymer chain, chain scission, etc. in Hi-PE specimen. A wide angle X-ray diffraction showed that 3 kinds of specimens had no fundamental changes in polymer crystalline structure considering each 2$\theta$ of diffraction peak. Remaining tenacity of netting twines was in order of PE, nylon, and Hi-PE after having been exposed to the effect of 900 hours. PE and nylon treated with stuffs were shown to be more resilient than non-treated Hi-PE as confirmed by SEM.

Isolation of Enterovirus Causing Aseptic Meningitis in Busan, 2000-2002 Years (2000-2002년 바이러스성 뇌수막염의 발생양상 및 특성)

  • Enteroviruses isolation were attempted from samples obtained from aseptic meningitis-suspected patients in hospitals in Busan during 2000-2002. Enteroviruses were found in 2 of 292 cases in 2000, 4 of 371 cases in 2001, 83 of 703 cases in 2002. In 2000, the isolated viruses were found to be echovirus serotype 11 and coxsackievirus serotype B2. Coxsackievirus serotype B5 was isolated in 2001 and in 2002, echovirus serotypes 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 13, 25, 30 were isolated in 70 cases while coxsackievirus serotypes B3 and B4 were isolated in 10 cases. Various specimens tended to emerge over the years. The occurrence in 2000 tended to be mostly focus during the cold months, December through January, while in 2001, it occurred in May. In 2002, occurrence was found to be distributed from April to November with the highest rate during June and July. The strains of Vero and HEp-2 of echovirus and coxsackievirus, respectively, are highly infectious. Electron micrograph of echovirus and coxsackievirus show that they are small nonenevolped, isometric-shaped viruses. Isolated RNA from strains of echovirus and coxsackievirus showing cytopathic effects were used to undergo nested PCR which resulted in a 436 bp single band in all the strains. The serotype was sent to the Department of Virology at the Korean National Institute of Health for identification.

Effect of Botanical Antimicrobial Agent-Citrus Products on the Quality Characteristics during Kimchi Fermentation (식물성 천연항균소재를 첨가한 김치의 숙성 중 품질변화)

  • To develop natural antimicrobial agents for extending the self-life of Kimchi, the effect of botanical antimicrobial agent-citrus products(BAAC) on microorganisms related to Kimchi spoilage was investigated. The inhibitory effect of BAAC on microorganisms related to Kimchi spoilage was increased according to the concentration of BAAC. Antimicrobial activities of BAAC against microoiganisms related to Kimchi spoilage were remarkably high. The effect of BAAC on the cellular membrane function of microorganisms showed the perturbation of cells in the presence of BAAC. Direct isualization of microbial cells by using both transmission md scanning electron microscope showed microbial cell membrane was destroyed by treating with BAAC. It could be confirmed that BAAC completely inhibit the growth of the test strains. The pH of BAAC-added Kimchi was a little higher than that of the control through the fermentation period. Titratable acidify, vitamin C and viable cells in BAAC-added Kimchi were changed more slowly than those in the control. Sensory evaluation did not show any significant difference between $0.01\%$ BAAC-added Kimchi and the control that showed the best palatabilities during fermentation.
