  • We evaluated the physicochemical and sensory properties of rice cake (Baekseolgi) admixed with various amounts of soybean peel and prepared using a microwave oven. Moisture content decreased gradually during storage but the decrease was less when soybean peel was present, compared with the control material p<0.05). Weight reduction was significantly inhibited as soybean peel level increased. The color lightness $(L^*)$ and redness $(a^*)$ values did not significantly change after addition of soybean peel. However, the yellowness $(b^*)$ value increased uponaddition of soybean peel p<0.05). The RVA properties decreased significantly with the addition of soybean peel, but pasting temperature increased. In terms of texture, neither springiness nor cohesiveness changed upon addition of soybean peel. The hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of Baekseolgi tended to decrease in proportion to the amount of soybean peel added. Adhesiveness rose gradually during storage but the increase was less when soybean peel was added, compared with control. On sensory testing, neither color nor flavor changed upon addition of soybean peel. Baekseolgi with 5% (w/w) soybean peel scored lowest in terms of taste. Hardness score and moisture level were highest when soybean peel was added to 2% or 3% (both w/w). Overall acceptability was greatest when soybean peel was added to 2% (w/w). Thus, Baekseolgi with 2% (w/w) added soybean peal was satisfactory. We conclude that addition of soybean peel to Baekseolgi prepared using a microwave oven improves physicochemical and sensory properties, and delays deterioration during storage.

  • In this paper, we present a new beamforming scheme for a downlink of multiuser multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) communication systems. Recently, a block-diagonalization (BD) algorithm has been proposed for the multiuser MIMO downlink where both a base station and each user have multiple antennas. However, the BD algorithm is not efficient when the number of supported streams per user is smaller than that of receive antennas. Since the BD method utilizes the space based on the channel matrix without considering the receive combining, the degree of freedom for beamforming cannot be fully exploited at the transmitter. In this paper, we optimize the receive beamforming vector under a zero forcing (ZF) constraint, where all inter-user interference is driven to zero. We propose an efficient algorithm to find the optimum receive vector by an iterative procedure. The proposed algorithm requires two phase values feedforward information for the receive combining vector. Also, we present another algorithm which needs only one phase value by using a decomposition of the complex general unitary matrix. Simulation results show that the proposed beamforming scheme outperforms the conventional BD algorithm in terms of error probability and obtains the diversity enhancement by utilizing the degree of freedom at the base station.

  • Wireless Mesh Network(WMN) has drawn much attention due to easy deployment and good scalability. Recently, major power utilities have been focusing on R&D to apply WMN technology in Smart Grid Network. Smart Grid is an intelligent electrical power network that can maximize energy efficiency through bidirectional communication between utility providers and customers with ICT(Information Communication Technology). It is necessary to guarantee QoS of some important data in Smart Grid system such as real-time data delivery. In this paper, we suggest QoS enhancement method for WMN based Smart Grid system using IEEE 802.11s. We analyze Smart Grid Application characteristics and apply IEEE 802.11s WMN scheme for Smart Grid in domestic power communication system. Performance evaluation is progressed using NS-2 simulator implementing IEEE 802.11s. The simulation results show that the QoS enhancement scheme can guarantee stable bandwidth irrespective of traffic condition due to IEEE 802.11s reservation mechanism.

  • Recently, the design method by VHDL coding and synthesis has been used widely. As the integration ratio increases, the amount design by VHDL at a time also increases so many coding errors occur in a design. Thus, lots of time and effort is dissipated to detect those coding errors. This paper proposed a method to verify the coding errors in VHDL behavioral-level designs. As the methodology, we chose the method to detect the coding error by applying the generated set of verifying patterns and comparing the responses from the error-free case(gold unit) and the real design. Thus, we proposed an algorithm to generate the verifying pattern set for the coding errors. Verifying pattern generation is peformed for each code and the coding errors are classified as two kind: condition errors and assignment errors. To generate the patterns, VHDL design is first converted into the corresponding CDFG(Control & Data Flow Graph) and the necessary information is extracted by searching the paths in CDFG. Path searching method consists of forward searching and backward searching from the site where it is assumed that coding error occurred. The proposed algorithm was implemented with C-language. We have applied the proposed algorithm to several example VHDL behavioral-level designs. From the results, all the patterns for all the considered coding errors in each design could be generated and all the coding errors were detectable. For the time to generate the verifying patterns, all the considered designed took less than 1 [sec] of CPU time in Pentium-II 400MHz environments. Consequently, the verification method proposed in this paper is expected to reduce the time and effort to verify the VHDL behavioral-level designs very much.

  • It is known that the performance of a DS-CDMA system mainly depends on Multiple Access Interference(MAI). The effect of MAI in a reverse link is larger than that of a forward link because of the absence of orthogonality among mobile stations. In this paper we investigate the effect of synchronous transmission in the reverse link, which is compared to the performance of asynchronous transmission in the reverse link. In addition, we consider the effect of interference from Mobile Stations(MSs) in a hand-over region. That is, if we assume that a MS is moving from a serving base station(sowing BS) to a target base station(target BS), the signal of the MS is not orthogonal with the signals of all other MSs within the target BS because the MS is only synchronized with the serving BS. Finally we suggest an interference cancellation scheme to reduce the interference from MSs in the region of hand-over, which can be one of solutions for the capacity degradation due to interference from the MSs in the hand-over region in reverse link synchronous transmission.

  • Phytoncide, essential oil of trees, has microbicidal, insecticidal, acaricidal, and deodorizing effect. The present study was performed to examine the effect of phytoncide on Candida albicans, which is a commensal colonizer of the mucous membranes but has become an opportunistic pathogen. C. albicans was incubated with or without phytoncide extracted from Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc.; Japanese cypress) and then changes were observed in its optical density, cell viability and morphology. As concentrations of phytoncide added to the culture medium increased, optical density and cell viability of C. albicans decreased. Minimum inhibitory concentration of phytoncide for C. albicans was observed to be 0.25%, and minimum fungicidal concentration was 0.5%. Numbers of morphologically atypical cells with electron-dense cytoplasm and granules and increased with increasing concentration of the phytoncide. At higher concentrations of phytoncide, compartments and organelles in the cytoplasm became indistinguishable. The overall results indicate that the phytoncide used for this study has a strong antimicrobial activity against C. albicans. Therefore, the phytoncide may be used as a candidate for prevention and therapeutic agent against oral candidiasis.
