  • This study examines the differences in children's reading comprehension and satisfaction of storybooks according to a type of medium(paper and multimedia e-books). Six different storybooks were used and 85 children participated. Each child read a paper book and an e-book(both are different books). The study results showed that overall, the type of medium did not significantly affect the children's reading comprehension of all six storybooks: for two storybooks, some comprehension scores of paper books were higher than those of e-books, on the other hand, some comprehension scores of e-books were higher than those of paper books. Satisfaction scores of paper books are a little bit higher that those of e-books, although resulting in no statistically significant difference between two types. In addition, the study suggested that the amount of annual readings is positively related to improving children's composition ability and information acquisition ability. Finally, we proposed how to promote the use of e-books in the school library environments in terms of its usability and management policies.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a collaborative model for the archiving and preservation of an electronic book(e-book). In this study the way of the archiving and preservation for the e-book to deal with the technology evolution was suggested. Accordingly, the survey was made for obtaining the present status of the production and distribution of the domestic Online e-book. It is the same as the operation status of the archiving and preservation for the Online e-book worldwide. A collaborative model for accessible to preserved data, regardless of time period, was proposed for archiving the e-book, based on the OAIS reference model. There are three different models, suggested for domestic; the safe place model by law, the individual preservation/Peer-to-Peer model, and the preservation center model for e-book archiving. Among them, the safe place model by law was proposed for the optimum model of archiving an e-book at present.

  • A marketing platform based on the legal deposit system was designed. It is an e-book distribution platform that systematically binds library networks nationwide by linking with the National Library's deposit system to complete the existing paper that the library should become a publishing platform. The purpose is to bundle e-books into a distribution space and naturally assemble readers to serve as virtual platforms for domestic publishers, authors, bookstores, and platforms running various publishing / subscribing services. The premise is not a sale of e-books, but a rental concept, but the platform is valid regardless. In addition, the platform takes the form of social cooperatives to represent the interests of all members involved in publishing services. The lead-based distribution platform is the most ideal business model to compromise with reality. Conceptually, the service of the publishing content-related industry is a model in which all content is supplied from the lead-bone system, which is a collaborative space, and technically, the central e-book database controls the flow of all content, but the publishing content-related industry takes the form of controlling its flow through virtual.

  • This research aims at understanding the differences between expert and general users' perceptions regarding publication preferences for Korean classics collations and translations in order to formulate future directions for these materials. For this purpose, an overview of changes in publishing in general as well as current status of collation/translation of Korean classics in particular are being identified. An online questionnaire was carried out in order to collect data regarding perceptions and preferences of expert users and general users of Korean classics. The results are based on the analyses of more than 1,000 responses. The analyses show that electronic books will not completely replace printed books and publishing both electronic and printed books in tandem for the time being is most preferable in order to satisfy varying user needs. Statistical analysis shows differences in terms of use value, value from possession, and readability of electronic and printed books in the two groups of users. However, as for the value of preservation by relevant institutions, there was a statistical difference between two groups towards printed books unlike their electronic equivalents. The research shows strong preference towards printed forms of classics collations and translations for the purpose of scholarly research and translation. Actual usage statistics reveal much heavy use of online database of classics translations compared to the use of available electronic books. For future publishing decisions for classics collations and translations will need to take into consideration of their special characteristics and symbolic nature. Proper representation of these materials into electronic format would require a standardized platform that enable various uses in different environments.

  • Although it is about a decade since public libraries started to provide digital information services, lack of expertise for efficient service operation and restrictions related to copyrights have led to failure to obtain remarkable performances in uses. This study intends to analyze operation cases of domestic and overseas collaborative digital information services, as well as the current status of digital information services of libraries in Gyeonggido, thereby developing a collaborative digital information service model among public libraries on the level of local governments. This research then analyzed collaborative digital information service Web sites and surveys. Based on the analysis result, this study presented support of integrated search of possessed electronic information, Web database (DB), DB on original texts of regional records, online reference services, and mobile platforms as functional factors to embody a successful service model. As a system management road map, an eclectic model combining the merits of centralized and decentralized models was found to be more effective than a centralized or decentralized model in consideration of the characteristics of participating organizations.
