  • Objectives : Molluscum Contagiosum is a contagious disease most often seen in children. It is caused by molluscum contagiosum virus(MCV-1,2). The purpose of this study is to report three cases of Molluscum Contagiosum children treated by oriental medicine. Methods : The subjects are in regard to children diagnosed as Molluscum Contagiosum. We treated three children with herbal medicine(Gwakhyangjeonggisangamibang). Results : After treatment, the symptoms(papule on the whole body and pruritus) of Molluscum Contagiosum were improved. Two children of them were cured completely and the one child still appealed a little itching. But, the one child had atopic dermatitis, and suffered from itching primarily, so after treatment the itching sign decreased rather than before an attack of Molluscum Contagiosum. Conclusions : This study shows that oriental medicine can be an effective treatment for Molluscum Contagiosum. And the further study is needed with more cases and longer duration.

  • The aims of this study were to determine the effects of Sapindus mukorossi fruit extracts (SME) on the anti-oxidant activity in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. The results showed that SME significantly reduced the production of ROS in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The expression of pro-inflammatory proteins including COX-2 and iNOS were also obviously inhibited by SME in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Further studies revealed that SME up-regulated HO-1 and Nrf2 expression. Additionally, SME increased phosphorylation of Akt and GSK-3β. These results suggest that SME could attenuate oxidative stress by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.

  • Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes an acute and highly contagious viral disease of chicken that is great economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. Among the IBV structural proteins, the high rate spike glycoprotein S1 gene mutation and antigenic variant strains have been reported in many countries. During the years 2012~2014, 10 IBV strains were isolated from infected chicken farms distributed in provinces of Jeonbuk. Analysis of the S1 gene sequences amplified from 10 isolated strains with QX strains showed nucleotide homologies ranging from 96.5 to 95.4%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all strains were clustered into QX-like groups. This study suggests that QX-like IBVs are circulating in commercial chicken farms in Jeonbuk. Therefore, the continuing survellance is significantly important for prevention and control of BIV infection.

  • Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) and chicken anemia virus (CAV) have gained much importance as an immunosuppressive and economically important emerging pathogen of poultry. This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of FAdV and CAV infection in chickens. The groups were divided into Korean native chickens, broiler, layer hens and broiler breeder and set up groups according to age. As results, 12.5% of the native chicken, 2.5% of broiler and 6.7% of layer chicken were positive, respectively by PCR for FAdV. Serological test showed that 84.8%, 79.0%, 97.7% and 96.1% of chickens were positive for antibody to FAdV in native chickens, broiler, layer hens and broiler breeder. The prevalence of CAV infection were 20.0%, 7.5%, 16.7% and 10.0%, based on CAV gene detection by PCR. In serological test of CAV, 40.6%, 35.9%, 84.8% and 73.9% of chickens were positive in that groups.

  • To clarify for the presence of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in Korea before 1986, in which the virus was first isolated, materials collected from chicken diagnostic consignments between 1980 and 1985 and propagated in chicken embryos or cell cultures were screened by the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeted to the nucleocapsid gene of the virus. Among 11 samples examined, one sample (IBV-SNU80108) submitted in 1980 showed specific PCR product (281 bp). When the amplified product was sequenced, together with IBV vaccine virus H120 strain, and compared with the data for ten other IBV strains derived from the GeneBank, identities between IBV-SNU80108 and other strains in nucleotide and amino acid sequences ranged 96.3% to 63.7% and 96.4% to 69%, respectively. IBV-SNU80108 was distinct from H120 strain by showing 91.9% and 92.9% identities in the respective sequences. This data suggested that IBV genetically distinctive from other foreign IBV strains might be present before 1986 in Korea.

  • A Persian chinchila (2 years old, intact female) and a Korean domestic shorthaired cat (3 months, intact male) were referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with tachypnea. The two cats were diagnosed as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) by blood and blood chemical examination, radiographic examination, RT-PCR and electrophoresis analysis of pleural effusion. Thromboxane synthetase inhibitor (Ozagrel HCl, 5 mg/kg, twice a day) was administered to the Persian chinchila and Korean domestic shorthair for 13 days and 16 days, respectively. Pleural effusion disappeared after treatment with Ozagrel HCl. Further study is needed to establish a new application protocol of Ozagrel HCl for FIP cases.

  • Recent social interests on mad cow disease and Creutzfelt-Jacob disease lead researcher' focus onto pathogenic prion proteins causing those diseases. The purpose of this study is to introduce a novel method for micromolecular level quantification of PrP 106-126 peptide, which is a part of prion protein. Fluorescamine has been chosen due to its fluorescence emission characteristics upon reaction with primary amines and Alpha-imager is used to detect the intensity of fluorescence. We succeeded in setting optimal conditions for quantification of PrP 106-206, amyloidogenic prion peptide, at micromolecular level. This study will contribute to identify prion protein aggregation inhibitor and develop new prion protein drug.
