  • The EP(electric propulsion) is unique in that several energy sources can be utilized to produce the electric energy and that high exhaust velocity can be achieved compared to the conventional chemical propulsion. Though a lot of variety of non chemical propulsion are under study, the fact that the EP's specific impulse ranges widely from 200s to 5000s led most research to concentrate on the electric propulsion research. This paper, therefore, is aimed to introduce the up-todate existing EP family such as electrothermal, electrostatic and electromagnetic thrusters where its operating concepts, characteristics and possible variants are presented for future applications.

  • A chamber enduring 3,000 bars and an electrical high voltage power system have been designed and installed for studying the characteristics of the plasma produced in electro-thermal chemical propulsion system. In order to test the structural characteristics, polyethylene injectors were used which have 4 or 6 mm inner diameter and several lengths from 15 to 70 mm. The capacitors were charged at the voltages of 5.2, 7.3 and 10.4 kV which correspond to 5.58, 11 and 22.3 kJ in charging energy. The observed resistivities of the plasma injector are close to those predicted by a theoretical model that describes the plasma resistivity according to high current density.

  • A study on ETC(Electrothermal chemical) Guns has been conducted. The existing code of the numerical analysis for the interior ballistics has been extended for ETC Guns. Using this code, the performance analysis of interior ballistics according to the injection patterns of the plasma energy has been fulfilled.

  • The high current pulsed power systems(PPS) for rail guns, ET and ETC accelerators require many components of very high cost. If one failed to select component specifications based on optimal design, cost effective and reliable PPS could not be obtained. It is very significant to study a preliminary circuit scheme and to determine optimal specifications via circuit simulation before constructing the PPS based on modulized capacitor banks. The optimal crowbar resistor value, module inductance was determined in view of energy loss, the voltage reversal of capacitors and the transient current of crowbar diodes.
