The aggregate properties of chilled converter slag reformed by atomizing liquid converter slag were investigated. The properties of mortars with various replacement of standard sand by chilled converter slag as recycled fine aggregates were investigated. The particle shape of chilled converter slag by atomizing was a sphere with an open cavity which is enclosed with two layers like a bored coconut. Specific gravity, unit weight and fineness modulus increased with increasing the replacement, and solid content had the maximum at the replacement of 75% and water absorption rate had the minimum at the replacement. The hardened mortars with higher replacements have the higher specific gravity and the denser texture.

Converter slag is a by-product generated by refining the pig iron produced into molten steel in the blast furnace, occupying about 15 % of the weight of steel production. It has a high free-CaO content that can generate expansion cracks when used for concrete aggregate. This is the main reason to make it difficult to recycle. To solve this problem, government guideline requires that converter slag has to be aged in an open yard for 90 days. However, aging can not be perfectly performed because it entails time and cost. In this study, we tried to investigate the applicability of converter slag as a cementitious material rather than an aggregate by mixing converter slag with mortar formulations. According to the EDS results of the converter slag in the experiment, we found that screening in the aggregate phase was more effective than that in the powder phase. When the particles separated by a magnet in the aggregate state were pulverized and used for concrete up to a 15 % replacement ratio, various engineering characteristics, such as flow, length change, and compressive strength, showed engineering characteristics similar to those of the control mix.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the area of the southern gate in ancient temples. As the southern gate played a role of the front gate, the national or royal ceremonies had been held around the southern gates. The ancient southern gate of temples has had the place for the huge ceremonies such as a royal parade and an inspection of troops. Moreover, this place was recorded in the 'Samkooksagi(三國史記)' as Jeon-Ro(前路). The Southern gate and the Jeon-Ro had been planned together in the front area of the ancient temples, and the gate had been designed to look down the Jeon-Ro. These findings can be verified through the result of a recent excavation at a site of Hwangnyongsa temple in Gyeongju. This research confirmed that the huge ceremonies had been held at the Jeon-Ro including the area of southern gates. Furthermore, a Hwangnyongsa temple is regarded as a concrete case of verifying the composition of the area of Southern gate.
Basic oxygen furnace @OF) slag. a by-pradud of thc iron and steelmaking industry produced in largc quantities in Korea, poszs a subslantial disposal challenge. The BOF slag used in this study was if3 CaCO, in total n e u ~ ~ pnowger and application of 7-8 Mgha' was needed to bring soil pH to 6.5 horn pH 5.0-5.5 m silly clay or clay loam sod wnlained about 10% orgaoic matter. A field assay was conducted to shldg whether BOP slag could bc used as a dolomitic k i n g agent for agricullural soils. Four slag rates (0, 4, 8, 12 Mgha-')were investigated for their effcfect on soil pmperti~, mineral concentralions in leaf tissues of rice and soybean, and yield of the crops. Slag application at 8 Mgha-' rate in paddy field increased pH, Ca Mg, P, Si and Fe wntenl in sail and rice yield by 4.3-14.25 depending an the soil type. h upland field the 8 Mghaf ratc increa3ed pH, Ca and Fe wntent m soil and soybean yield by 36.6%. Thus, BOF slag appears to be a useful liming mate&\ulcornerl for corrzch~gs oil acidity on both paddy and upland ficld soils and for innwing Ca, Mg, P, Si, and Fe wncenhation in plants.

The converter slag can be used to remove phosphate ion into the form of solid state from the wastewater. This research aims to evaluate the change of pH, alkalinity, leaching of positive ion in the wastewater and the removal of phosphate from the initial condition of wastewater. The change of pH was abruptly increased upto pH 11 for the initial condition of pH from 7.0 to 8.5 fer 0.5 unit of pH. The alkalinity was steadily increased from 10 hours of reaction time not same as pH increase. The removal of phosphate was very effective till 10 hours of reaction then it was slow after that time. The positive ion, magnesium ion was leached from the concentration of 2.0 mg/L to 4.3mg/L at the reaction time of 27 hours and 36 hours. Therefore, converter slag can be used to remove the phosphate in the form of Struvite from the wastewater.
In order to maximize the recycling of converter slag to the more valuable fields, such as high quality aggregates for construction, cement industry and flux for ion making. It will be very important to control the compositions and properties of converter slag to suit the purpose of utilizastion. In this study, converter slag (STELCO, CANADA) was mixed with 5%~30% $SiO_2$and 7% carbon, and then reduced at $1650^{\circ}C$. After the reduction was completed, the reformed slags were cooled to room temperature in the furnace. All of the slags were then characterized using SEM-EDX, XRD and chemical analysis. Also the compressive strengths and densities of the reformed slags were measured to compare with natural aggregates. XRD analysis shows that th phases of reformed slags are changed from bredigite+merwinite mixed phases of 10% $SiO_2$added reduction to akermanite phases of 20% and 30% $SiO_2$ added reduction. But the SEM-EDX analysis revealed that the phase distribution of the reformed slags was changed very sensitively and complicately depends on the change of slag compositions. And also the properties of reformed slags are changed very much depend on the phase distribution. About one third of Cadmium and on fifth of Vanadium are remained in reduction reformed converter slag. Another heavy metal elements such as cobalt, zinc, lead are removed up to more than 90-95% of original slag. The compressive strength and density of 25% $SiO_2$ added and reformed slag is very near to natural granite. This is superior more than 10% to Thyssen's $SiO_2$ added and oxidized converter slag aggregates.
To examine the applicabilty of the converter furnace slag from iron-works as concrete aggregate respective concrete furnace slag with contents of 20%. 40%, 60%. 80% were mixed with granulated slag, and the strength and stability tests for these specimens were followed. The slump value of the concrete mixed with converter furnace slag was higher than that of the conventional concrete. Furnace slag and granulated slag was increased as the increase of converter furnace content. The strength of the concrete mixed with converter furnace slag and granulate slag increased as an increase of converter furnace content and age. The expansion rate of the concrete mixed with converter furnace slag and granulated slag increased from 0.007% to 0.19% as the converter furnace content changed from 20% to 80%. From the above results in the strength and expansion rate, the concrete with the converter furnace content of 40% was considered to be recommandable for the stable construction of the concrete. Calculated formulas for tensile strength(${\sigma}_t$) and flexural strength(${\sigma}_f$) from the regression a.nalysis of the correlations among these compressive strength (${\sigma}_c$), tensile strength and flexural strength are as follows. ${\sigma}_t$ = 0.16952${\sigma}_c$ - 4.9313 ${\sigma}_f$ = 0.25727${\sigma}_c$ + 6.0528
