  • Interfacial properties and electrical sensing fer fiber fracture in carbon and SiC fibers/epoxy composites were investigated by the electrical resistance measurement and fragmentation test. As fiber-embedded angle increased, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of two-type fiber composites decreased, and the elapsed time takes long until the infinity in electrical resistivity. The initial slope of electrical resistivity increased rapidly to the infinity at higher angle, whereas electrical resistivity increased gradually at small angle. Furthermore, both fiber composites with small embedded angle showed a fully-developed stress whitening pattern, whereas both composites with higher embedded angle exhibited a less developed stress whitening pattern. As embedded angle decreased, the gap between the fragments increased and the debonded length was wider for both fiber composites. Electro-micromechanical technique could be a feasible nondestructive evaluation to measure interfacial sensing properties depending on the fiber-embedded angle in conductive fiber reinforced composites.

  • This paper investigated the electrical properties of multiwall carbon nanotube reinforced polydimethylsiloxane (CNT-PDMS) strain sensors with copper electrodes on the wet-etched surface. MWCNT-PDMS strain sensors were fabricated according to the wt% of MWCNT. Surfaces on the electrode area were wet-etched with various etching duration and silver epoxy adhesives were spread on the wet-etched surface. Finally, we attached the copper electrodes to the MWCNT-PMDS strain sensors. We checked the electric conductivities by the two-probe method and sensing characteristics under the cyclic loading. We observed the electric conductivity of MWCNT-PDMS strain sensors increased sharply and the scattering of the measured data decreased when the surface of the electrode area was wet-etched. Initial resistances of MWCNT-PDMS strain sensors were inversely proportion to wt% of MWCNT and the etching duration. However, the resistance changing rates under 30% strain increased as wt% of MWCNT and the etching duration increased. Decreasing rate of the electric resistance change after 100 repetitions was smaller when wt% of MWCNT was larger and the etching duration was short. This was due to the low initial resistance of the MWCNT-PMDS strain sensors by the wet-etching.

  • Rheological and electrical properties of polystyrene (PS)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites via coagulated precipitation were investigated. Chemical modification and surfactant wrapping of CNT to improve the dispersion of CNTs may reduce the intrinsic properties of pristine CNT. To avoid this problem, PS and CNTs were dissolved and dispersed in dimethylformamide and then PS/CNT nanocomposites were prepared by the coagulated precipitation of CNT-dispersed PS solution in water. The coagulated precipitation method was highly effective enhancing the electrical conductivity of nanocomposites. Furthermore, the effect of adding poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) crosslinked particles to PS matrix on the rheological and electrical properties was investigated. With the addition of the crosslinked particles, the electrical percolation threshold of CNT reduced to 0.25 wt% and electrical conductivity increased further. It is speculated that CNTs in the volume occupied by crosslinked particles helped electrical pathway formation.

  • In general, the development of thermoplastic composites has been confronted with difficult problems such as the weak bonding strength between fibers and matrix. However, now, such problems are being surmounted by the development of resins, the improvement of processes, and introduction of interphase. Especially, the introduction of interphase between fiber and matrix can help a dissipation of the impact energy and provide a good adhesion between fibers and matrix. In this study, polymeric interphase was introduced by electrodeposition, modified polypropylene was added to improve the weak bonding strength between interphase and polypropylene matrix. By evaluation of interlaminar shear strength and impact strength of the composites, it was found that composites with introduced composites showed higher mechanical properties than those of composites without interphase. Reactive polymers which have either anhydride or free acid functional group were used as interphase materials, and these polymers also behave as charge carrier in aqueous solution during the electrodeposition process. Weight gain on the carbon fibers was evaluated by changing process parameters such as concentration of solution, current density, and electrodeposition time.

  • Dielectric properties and shape memory characteristics of SBS composites filled with carbon black as conductive filler and (Ba,Ca)$(Sn,Ti)O_3$ or $SrTiO_3$ as dielectrics were investigated for the development of phantom model. SBS/carbon black composite showed an increment of complex dielectric constant with increasing the content of carbon black and the frequency dependence that the dielectric constant decreases with the frequency. The complex dielectric constant and the conductivity of SBS/carbon black/dielectrics composites increased with the increase of dielectrics and the characteristics of the frequency dependence also occurred by the effect of carbon black. Phantom materials with the dielectric properties and the conductivity corresponding to human tissues for the measurement of specific absorption rate(SAR) within the frequency range of current mobile phones(775MHz~2GHz) could be developed by adjusting the composition ratios of carbon black, dielectrics and SBS and by controlling the characteristic of frequency dependence of composite. From thermomechanical cycling test good shape recoverability could be obtained in SBS composite even though the residual strain was increased by the effect of filler.

  • The improved SWNTs/PANi composite actuator films applicable to an artificial muscle were fabricated successfully using a new process of manufacture that consists of 90% pure single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and chemical polymerization. PANi is electrically conducting polyaniline polymer. The conductivities of the composite SWNTs/PANi film-type actuators and the pure PANi films fabricated were measured as 56.15 S/cm and 17.38 S/cm, respectively, by the 4-prove method. The conductivity of the composite actuator is 3.2 times higher than the pure PANi film. The fabricated composite actuator showed higher conductivity than any other similar ones. The quality of samples was investigated by an electron scanning microscope (SEM). To measure the actuating strains, a specially designed beam balance apparatus was developed and strains of the composite actuators was measured by a laser displacement sensor subjected to electric currents. During the operation, the sample was soaked in the $NaNO_3$ solution and the sine-wave voltage in the range of $+1V{\sim}-1V$ was applied. The length of the composite actuator changed from $l_0=12.690$ mm to $l_1=12.733$ so that the change of length was l=0.043 mm and the strain was 0.34 %. This is a very high strain for this kind of a composite actuator. Other result reported by Tahhan showed 0.23 % strain, so that the present result is improved by 48%.

  • In this review paper, we introduce recent research studied effective physical properties of the reinforced composite using mean-field homogenization. We address homogenization for effective stiffness and expand it to effective thermal/electrical conductivity and dielectric constant. Multiphysics problems like piezoelectricity and thermoelectricity are considered by simplifying the constitutive equation into the linear equations like Hooke's law. We present a generalized theoretical formula for predicting effective physical properties of composite and validation by against finite element analysis.

  • In this paper, we have studied the complex permittivities and their influence on the design of microwave absorbers of E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates containing three different types of carbon-based nano conductive fillers such as carbon black (CB), carbon nano fiber (CNF) and multi-wall nano tube (MWNT). The measurements were performed fur permittivities at the frequency band of 0.5 GHz$\sim$18.0 GHz using a vector network analyzer with a 7 mm coaxial air line. The experimental results show that the complex permittivities of the composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the conductive fillers. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivities of the composites were proportional to the filler concentrations. But, depending on the types of fillers and frequency band, the increasing rates of the real and imaginary parts with respect to the filler concentrations were all different. These different rates can have an effect on the thickness in designing the single layer microwave absorbers. The effect of the different rates at 10 GHz was examined by using Cole-Cole plot; the plot is composed of a single layer absorber solution line and measured permittivities from these three types of composites. Single layer absorbers of 3 different thicknesses using carbon nano materials were fabricated and the -10 dB band of absorbing performances were all about 3 GHz.

  • The effective elasticity and conduction of composite materials containing arbitrarily oriented multiple phases has been analyzed using the concept of orientation-dependent average fields and concentration factors. The analysis provided closed form expressions for the effective stiffnesses and conductivities. Under the prescribed boundary conditions, the concentration factors were evaluated by the equivalent inclusion principle, through which the interaction between various phases is approximated by the Mori-Tanaka mean-field approximation. SiC particulate(SiC$_{p}$) reinforce aluminum(Al) matrix composites were fabricated and their elastic constants and electrical conductivities were measured together with a careful study of their microstructure. The measured properties showed a systematic anisotropy and this behavior could be attributed to the preferred orientation of SiC$_{p}$. The theoretical model developed was applied to the computation of the anisotropic properties of these composites. Both two-phase and three-phase composites were considered based on the microstructural information. The SiC$_{p}$ was modeled as an ellipsoid with planar random orientation distribution in the extruded Al/SiC$_{p}$ composites. The effect of extraneous phase such as intermetallic compounds was also investigated.tigated.

  • This paper reports a novel method for simultaneous exfoliation of graphene and dispersion of carbon nanotube by using intercalation method. In common, graphene flake and carbon nanotubes can be produced through individual exfoliation or debundling process, but the process require significant amount of time. Here, potassium sodium tartrate was thermally intercalated into graphite and carbon nanotube bundle for simultaneous exfoliation and dispersion of graphene and carbon nanotubes. We confirmed expansion of interlayer distance via XRD, and also found that oxidation level of the exfoliated materials were significantly low (below 8.3 at%). The produced materials are fabricated in to conductive composite film via vacuum filtration and spray deposition to show enhancement of conductive properties.
