  • In the present study, kenaf fibers were treated with sodium hydroxide using soaking and ultrasonic methods prior to biocomposite processing, respectively. The effect of alkali treatment on the kenaf-PLA interfacial adhesion and mechanical and thermal characteristics of kenaf/poly(lactic acid) biocomposites was investigated in terms of their interfacial shear strength, flexural properties, dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability and also microscopic observations of kenaf fibers and the composite fracture surfaces. As a result, use of both soaking and ultrasonic methods for treating kenaf fiber surfaces played a role in increasing the fiber-matrix adhesion and the mechanical properties of the biocomposites. Their characteristics depended not only on the fiber surface treatment method but also on the treatment condition like alkali concentration and treatment time.

  • A study on the undrained behavior of isotropically consolidated clay-sand mixtures was carried out using the automated triaxial testing apparatus. Overconsolidated ratio, effective mean pressure and clay content( up to 20% bentonite) were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. Undrained behavior(strength and pore water pressure generation during shear in triaxial loading) depends upon overconsolidation ratio, confining pressure and clay content. Significant changes in undrained compression characteristics occurred at around 20% of clay contents in the sand. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for clay-sand mixtures. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.

  • Just as infill material can reduce the shear strength of a rock joint, a layer of soft material between concrete and the surrounding rock socket can reduce pile shaft resistance of drilled shafts socketed in rocks. This can also result from construction methods that leave smeared or remoulded rock or drilling fluid residue on the sides of the rock sockets after concrete placement. The nature of the interface between the concrete pile shaft and the surrounding rock is critically important to the performance of the pile, and is heavily influenced by construction practice. Characteristics of the concrete-rock interface, such as roughness and the presence of the soft materials deposited during or after construction can significantly affect the shaft resistance response of the pile. In this study, we conducted the parametric study to examine the performance characteristics of drilled shafts socketed in smeared rock under the vertical load with the code of finite difference method of FLAC 2D. As the results of the current research, the parameters that affect the settlement of the pile head and the ultimate unit shaft resistance could be identified.

  • Recycled plastic composites of ABS/PE (50/50 and 20/80) and ABS/GF (90/10) were fabricated from plastic components of waste LCDs and effects of PE composition on elongation of ABS/PE composites were investigated. Increased PE contents improved elongation of the composite from 2.4% to 13%, which was attributed to increased crystalline behavior of the ABS/PE composite afforded by ductile PE fraction: SEM fractographs showed some sign of plastic deformation of PE matrix before ductile fracture of the composites.

  • In this study, a UV-cured GFRP molding is made using a combination of hand lay-up and resin transfer molding, and its properties are analyzed. The molded plates produced using various vacuum pressures (0 mmHg, -450 mmHg, and -760 mmHg) are examined via a comparison of hand lay-up molding and resin transfer molding. Tests are conducted by processing tensile specimens (ASTM D-5083), flexural test specimens (ASTM D-790), and ILSS test specimens (ASTM D-2344) according to each ASTM standard with a molded plate. Similarly, the UV-cured GFRP molding is compared against GFRP using epoxy. It was confirmed that the mechanical strengths of all the specimens increased when the vacuum pressure was increased and when UV curing was applied. This is believed to be because as the vacuum pressure increases, the pores of the cured specimen are removed, thereby reducing defects, and the bonding force between the glass fiber and the resin is stronger than that of the epoxy resin. It is expected that if resin transfer molding methods and UV-cured resins are used for molding GFRP composites in industry, products with better mechanical properties and faster curing time will be produced.

  • In the fine blanking process, which is a press operation known for producing parts with narrow clearances and high precision through the application of high pressure, die roll often occurs during the shearing process when the punch penetrates the material. This die roll phenomenon can significantly reduce the functional surface of the parts, leading to decreased product performance, strength, and fatigue life. In this research, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the factors influencing die roll in the curvature area of the fine blanking process and identified its root causes. Subsequently, we designed and experimentally verified a die roll reduction process specifically tailored for the door latch manufacturing process. Our findings indicate that die roll tends to increase as the curvature radius decreases, primarily due to the heightened bending moment resulting from reduced shape width-length. Additionally, die roll is triggered by the absorption of initial punch energy by scrap material during the early shearing phase, resulting in lower speed compared to the product area. To mitigate the occurrence of die roll, we strategically selected the Shaving process and carefully determined the shaving direction and clearance area length. Our experiments demonstrated a promising trend of up to 75% reduction in die roll when applying the Shaving process in the opposite direction of pre-cutting, with the minimum die roll observed at a clearance area length of 0.2 mm. Furthermore, we successfully implemented this approach in the production of door latch products, confirming a significant reduction in die roll. This research contributes valuable insights and practical solutions for addressing die roll issues in fine blanking processes.

  • The joining of aluminum and HSS (high-strength steel) by the conventional clinching process is limited by the low formability of HSS. Defects in the clinching joint, such as necking of the upper sheet, cracks, and lack of interlocking, are produced by the different ductility properties of HSS and aluminum. In this study, we propose the hole clinching process for joining Al6061 and SPFC440, in which deformation of SPFC440 is avoided by drilling a hole in the SPFC440. The dimensions of the interlocking in the hole-clinched joint necessary to provide the required joint strength were determined. Based on the volume constant of the hole clinching process, the shapes of the tools were designed by finite element (FE)-analysis. A hole clinching experiment was performed to verify the proposed process. A cross-section of the joint showed good agreement with the results of the FE-analysis. The lap shear strength was found to be 2.56 kN, which is higher than required joint strength.

  • Improved version of previous 'Orthotropic' closure approximation, termed 'ORW' has been numerically developed using new homogeneous flow data. Previous 'Orthotropic' closure approximation, i.e., ORF or ORL showed non-physical oscillation for interaction coefficient $C_1$<0.001 at simple shear flow. It also shows non-physcial oscillation and under-prediction compared with 'Distribution Function Calculation' at non-homogeneous flow of center-gated disk. These phenomena are mainly due to the flow data of 'Distribution Function Calculation' which were used for least-square optimization. ORW obtained by fitting flow data of low interaction coefficient does not show non-physical oscillation and results in reasonably good behaviors at non-homogeneous flows as well as homogeneous flows. Fitting function forms have not been found to improve overall behaviors. It has been found that considering all the eigenvalues of orientation tensor (including the third eigenvalues) might end up with a better closure approximation than just considering the first and second eigenvalues. It is, however, very important and yet difficult to select appropriate function forms of eigenvalues. Numerical simulation including coupling and in-plane velocity gradient effects were performed for injection mold filing process with a film-gated strip and a center-gated disk using ORW and various other closure approximations for comparisons. Although ORW is in excellent agreement with 'Distribution Function Calculation', the predicted results seem to have consistent error in comparison with experimental data. The diffusivity term with constant interaction coefficient might have to be further investigated in order to accurately describe orientation states.

  • The RFI process is an OoA process that fiber mats and resin films are laminated and cured in a vacuum bag. In case that resin film is insufficient to fill empty space in fibers, it makes void defect in composites and this void decrease mechanical properties of the composites. For this reason, non-destructive testing is usually used to evaluate void of manufactured composites. So, in this study, a manufacturing method of standard void specimens, which are able to be used as references in non-destructive testing, was proposed by controlling resin film thickness in the RFI process. Also, a fiber compaction test was proposed as a method to set the resin film thicknesses depending on target voids of manufacturing panels. The target void panels of 0%, 2%, and 4% were made by the proposed methods, and signal attenuation depending on void was measured by non-destructive testing and image analysis. In addition, voids of specimens for tensile, in-plane, short beam and compressive tests were estimated by signal attenuation, and mechanical properties were evaluated depending on the voids.

  • In the automobile industry, there is growing demand for lightweight vehicles due to environmental problems and rising oil prices. Therefore, aluminum alloys and special materials are being used to reduce the weight of vehicles, but there are still many difficulties to overcome in terms of cost and strength. Therefore, the application of advanced high strength steel (AHSS)is increasing. AHSS has good strength and formability.Safety regulations are becoming stricter, and 1.2-GPa super-high-strength steels are gradually being applied for the center pillar and roof rails. Thus, the application of different kinds of steels in automobile bodiesis also increasing gradually. This study evaluates the resistance point weldability and the characteristics of a welded part of SGAFC1180 1.2t steel. A simulation was used to observe the nugget formation and its growth behavior. The prediction performance showed a similar tendency within an error rate of 10%. Also, the effect of this behavior on the process resistance and dynamic resistance was investigated, along with the correlation between the shear tensile strength and nugget diameter.
