In this paper, bending capacities of glulams with different configurations of cross-section were evaluated. These configurations included horizontal(BH), vertical(BVN), vertical with vertical plywood (BVV) and vertical combination of lamination with horizontal plywood(BVH). Full-scale bending tests were performed to investigate the effect of different section configurations on bending strength(MOR) and stiffness(MOE) of glulam. Compared with type BH, MOR of glulam with type BVN configuration was improved about 23%, which was considered to be caused by defect dispersion effect, while MOE of glulams with these two types of configurations were similar. Because MOE of plywood is generally smaller than that of solid wood laminar, MOE of type BVH glulam decreased about 15%, but in the case of type BVV glulam, MOR was improved without any reduction of MOE. The reason of this result could be undersood in the view of shear-reinforcement effect, which was verified from analysis of fracture mode. From the results of this study, it was concluded that bending capacity of glulam could be improved by proper section design, such as laminar arrangement and shear reinforcement.

Numerical analysis of shear walls governed by flexural behavior is conducted for the seismic control performance of proposed friction dampers installed at the center of coupling beams. Control effectiveness of shear walls connected by beams with the proposed dampers are compared for single shear wall with same flexural rigidity. Average responses of the shear walls with the dampers are found with seven scaled-downed earthquakes based on KEC 2005 design spectrum. Slip load is the most important design parameter. It is designed to be 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90% of total vertical shear force at damper location to prevent damper slip in specific stories. Nonlinear time-history analysis is conducted by using SeismoStruct analysis program. Seismic control performance of the dampers is evaluated for base shear, energy dissipation, curvature and top-floor displacement. Results show that the dampers are the most effective in reducing the responses when their total slip load is 30% of total vertical shear force.

Steel-concrete composite beam has been used for a considerable time in building construction. An essential component of a composite beam is the shear connection between the steel section and the concrete slabs, which is provided by mechanical shear connectors. A variety of shapes and devices have been in use as shear connectors. This study summarizes the results of an experimental investigation involving the testing of push-out specimens with angle shear connectors. All of 22 push-out specimens were designed to study the effect of a number of parameters on the shear capacity of angle shear connectors such as the height of the angle connector, the length of welding, and the pitch of angles. Based on the test results, a design equation was developed for predicting the shear strength of angle shear connectors.

The aim of this study is to assess the seismic performance of octagonal hollow cross section reinforced concrete bridge pier, and to investigate the effect of longitudinal reinforcement ratios on the failure behavior. Four octagonal hollow section RC bridge columns of small scale model were tested under a quasi-static cyclically reversed horizontal load with constant axial load. The volumetric ratio of transverse spiral hoop of all specimens was maintained constant(0.206%), the ratios of longitudinal reinforcement were varied(2.36 ~ 4.71%). Failure behavior and seismic performance were investigated. Three specimens with the exception of lap spliced specimen showed flexure-shear failure at final stage. The test results with the exception of lap spliced specimen showed that the displacement ductility factor and accumulated energy dissipation decreased in inverse proportion to the ratio of longitudinal steel.
Based on U-shaped composite beam, the new form of AU-composite beam were developed to create economical and efficient components reducing the cost and shortening the length of construction work. Because the U-shaped sections are open and needs to be fixed by topping concrete securely. Therefore, it is required to maintain the U-shaped sections in a structure and to work in the safe condition through construction. It also requires accessories that resist the horizontal shear force for synthesis between the top and bottom of the U-shaped section. To reinforce these shortcomings, a shear connector has been developed with various purposes of steel plate anchors. In this study, the steel plate anchors were directly tested and the shear force was evaluated by the horizontal shear force. The experiment was divided into two types, depending on the applicable deck plates. As a result of the experiment, the continuous type specimens showed greater resistance in both strength and displacement than the ones of stud anchor specimen. In discontinuous type case, due to shear simulations and simple element analysis, the less increase the ratio of width to height and the more shear strength decreased. Thus, the shear strength equation of the stud anchor was modified to suggest the new shear strength based on the testing results.

In the NRC (New paradigm Reinforced Concrete) beam, steel forms, main angles used as main reinforcements, and shear angles used as basic shear reinforcements are welded and assembled in the form of vierendeel truss structures in a steel factory. After the NRC truss frame is installed at the site, additional main reinforcement and shear reinforcement are distributed. In this study, the shear performance evaluation of the NRC beam was conducted through shear tests in accordance with the type of shear reinforcement of the NRC beam (shear angle, inclined shear reinforcing bar, and U-type cover bar). As a result of the test, the initial stiffness was similar before the initial cracking of each specimen, and all specimens were shear fractured. The shear reinforcements of the specimens exhibited a yielding behavior at the time of the maximum sheat force, and the shear strengths of the specimens increased as the amount of reinforcement of the shear reinforcement increased. These results show that NRC shear reinforcements exhibit shear performance corresponding to their shear strength contribution. As a result of calculating the nominal shear strengths according to KDS 14 20 22, the experimental shear strengths of the NRC beam specimens with shear reinforcement was 37~146% larger than the nominal shear strengths, so It was evaluated as a safety side.

The objective of this research is to investigate the seismic performance and flexure-shear behavior of square reinforced concrete bridge piers with solid and hollow cross section. Test specimens were nonseismically designed with the aspect ratio 4.5 Two reinforced concrete columns were tested under constant axial load while subjected to lateral load reversals with increasing drift levels. Longitudinal steel ratio was 2.217 percent. The transverse reinforcement ratio As/($s{\cdot}h$), corresponding to 58 percent of the minimum lateral reinforcement required by Korean Bridge Design Specifications for seismic detailing, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by limited ductility concept. This study are to provide quantitative reference data for the limited ductility design concept and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, collapse, etc. Failure behavior, ultimate displacement/drift ratio, displacement ductility, response modification factor, equivalent viscous damping ratio, residual deformation, effective stiffness, plastic hinge length, strain of reinforcements and nonlinear analysis are investigated and discussed in this paper.
Recently, a concern about hollow core precast concrete (PC) slab has been increased as a method to improve the construction ability by reducing the self weight of structures during the construction. Hollow core slab which is known as a typical PC slab in domestic construction of PC building has a problem to put shear reinforcements in the web of element during the production of element in the factory. With regard to this point, recently, tripple ribs slab (TRS) which can be said as a new type of half PC slab system was developed. In TRS, it is possible to place shear reinforcements in PC element during the production of the element in the factory. This paper presents the shear test result of TRS which was done by one point loading test under simple support condition. Test parameters are the presence of cast-in-place (CIP) concrete and the contribution of lattice bars. From the test, it was found that the TRS has sufficient shear capacity to resist the design load and its strength can be predicted by the code equations for general beam. It is recommended to ignore the strength of lattice bar in the calculation of shear strength during the construction since its contribution is too low to be considered when CIP is not casted.

Due to the economic growth and development of construction technology, a role of foundation to resist heavy loads has been increased. In this present study to improve the structural performance of reinforced concrete pile, the precast HPC pile reinforced with rebar and filling concrete was developed and the strength of pile was predicted based on the limit state design method. The safety of HPC pile strength was evaluated by comparing with the design values. The geometry of HPC pile is a decagon cross section with a maximum width of 500 mm and a minimum width of 475 mm, and the hollow head of pile thickness is 70 mm. The inner area of the hollow head part was made as the square ribbed shape presented in the limit state design code in order to achieve horizontal shear strength between pile concrete and filling concrete. From the shear test results, it was found that the stable shear strength were secured without abrupt failure until maximum load stage despite the shear cracks was found. Shear strength is 135% and 119% higher than that of design value calculated from limit state design code. The driving test results of HPC pile according to the presence of additional reinforcement showed the outstanding crack resistance against impact loads condition. From the bending test results the flexural load between PHC pile and HPC pile was 1.51 times and 1.48 times higher than that of the design flexural load of conventional PHC pile.
