This study investigated the variation of the threshold strain and pore water pressure response of the coils at high amplitude vibration using resonant column test. As a result of tests, threshold shear strains of soft clay, clean quartz sand and stiff volcanic deposit were turned out to be 1$\times$10-2%, 1$\times$10-3%, 1$\times$10-4% respectively. Also, threshold shear Strain was found to be changed with confining pressure for the clean quartz sand. An increase of pore water pressure with shear strain was not significant within the shear strain 3~4$\times$10-3%, but it was abruptly increased beyond shear strain 1$\times$10-2%.

The behaviors of the reinforced concrete membrane elements are expected by Navier's three principles of the mechanics of materials. The adopted cyclic stress-strain curves of concrete consist of seven different unloading and loading stages in the compressive zone and six other stages in the tensile zone. The curves took into account the softening of concrete that was influenced by the tensile strain in the perpendicular direction of cracks. The stress-strain relationships for steel bar embedded in concrete subjected to reversed cyclic forces considered the tension stiffening effect and Baushinger effect. The predicted results of the analysis based on Navier's principles were in good agreement with the observed shear stress-strain relationships as well as transverse and longitudinal strains.

A study of interactive ground behaviour due to tunnelling adjacent to existing piles has not been recognized well for the most geotechnical engineers so far. Because this is a very sophisticated boundary condition problem. In this study, therefore, the author has conducted both the laboratory model test and finite element analysis (FEA) to figure out such a complicated ground behaviour related to shear strain formations. Based on the model testing and FEA results, a boundary line which divides into two distinctive shear strain formations in relation to the locations of end-bearing pile tips was proposed. The author believes that the proposed boundary line may be helpful for planning the appropriate tunnel positions for avoiding damage of buildings which supported by piled-foundations in urban areas.
Anisotropy of stiffiness, from extremely small strains to post-failure strains, of isotropically consolidated air-pulviated sands in plane strain compression was studied by using the newly developed instrumentation for small strain measurements. Seven types of sand of the world-wide origins were tested, which have been extensively used for research purposes. Stress-strain relationships for a wide range of strain from about 0.0001% to 10% were obtained with measuring axial and lateral strains locally free from the effects of bedding and membrane penetration errors at the specimen boundaries. It was found that the maximum shear modulus Gmax was irrespective of the angle $\delta$of the $\sigma$1 direction relative to the bedding plane. However, the normalized Gmax was varied with the types of sand. Furthermore, the dependency of the strain and stress level on the stiffness increased as decreased.

Wheel dynamometers are used to measure dynamic load that is conveyed from the road to a vehicle while driving. In this paper, two types of six-component wheel dynamometers utilizing shear deformation and bending deformation were designed and evaluated. Prior to designing the shear and bending type wheel dynamometers, the shear and bending deformation behaviors of the basic structure of the wheel dynamometer itself were analyzed using finite element analysis. Strain analysis was performed repeatedly in order to obtain a similar output sensing strain for each load component. The design was modified with a bridge circuit in order to minimize coupling strain. The results indicated that the shear type dynamometer was expected to obtain stable characteristics due to uniform strain distribution while the bending type dynamometer was expected to obtain high-quality sensitivity performance due to consistent output sensitivity.

In this paper, the cyclic soil behavior model. which can accommodate the cyclic hardening, was developed by modifying the original parallel IWAN model. In order to consider the irrecoverable plastic strain of soil. the cyclic threshold strain, above which the backbone curve deviates from the original curve, was defined and the accumulated strain was determined by summation of the strains above the cyclic threshold in the stress-strain curve with applying Masing rule on unloading and reloading curves. The isotropic hardening elements are attached to the original parallel IWAN model and the slip stresses in the isotropic hardening elements are shown to increase according to the hardening functions. The hardening functions have a single parameter to account for the cyclic hardening and are defined by the symmetric limit cyclic loading test in forms of accumulated shear strain. The model development procedures are included in this paper and the verifications of developed model are discussed in the companion paper.
In the working stress conditions, the strain level in a soil mass experienced by existing structures and during construction is less than about 0.1-1%. In order to analyse the deformational behavior accurately, the in-situ testing technique which provides the reliable deformational characteristics at small strains, needs to be developed. The purpose of this paper is to measure the small-strain shear modulus of soils by using pressuremeter test(PMT). PMT is a unique method for assessing directly the in-situ shear modulus of soils with strain amplitude. For the accurate small strain measurements without initial disturbance effect, the unloading-reloading cycle was used and the measured modulus was corrected in view of the relevant stress and strain levels around the PMT probe during testing. Not only in the calibration chamber but in the field, PMT tests were performed on the cohesionless soils. The variation in shear modulus with strain amplitude ranging from 10-2% to 0.5% was reliably determined by PMT PMT results were also compared with other in-situ and laboratory test results. Moduli obtained from different testing techniques matched very well if the effect of strain amplitude was considered in the com pall son.
Soil failure is initiated and preceded by forming and progressing of shear band, defined as the localization of deformation into thin zones of soil mass. To understand the failure mechanism of normally consolidated cohesive soil, the spatial distribution and evolution of deformation within the entire specimen need to be evaluated. In this study, vertical compression tests under plane strain condition were performed on reconstituted kaolinite specimens, while capturing digital images of the specimen at regular intervals during shearing. Overall stress-strain behavior from initial to post peak has been analyzed together with spatial distributions of deformations and shear band characteristics from digital images at 4 stages.
The purposes of this study are to investigate the mechanical prospeities of the inter mediate soils through consolidation tests and triaxial compression shear tests. The intermediate soils used in this study are artificial soils which are composed of sea clay, sand and it's crushed component. The relationship between plastic index and mechanical prosperties (permeability and compressibility) is investigated through series of consoli dation tests. Strain hardening phenomenon under shearing is explored based on several overconsideration ratios and strain rates in undrained shear tests. To make a comparative study difference of drain condition and strain rate, drain shear tests are performed with overconsolidation ratio.
