  • Limestone joint surfaces with smooth roughness were experimented by means of both the individual direct shear tests based on the KSRM standard test method and the multi-stage direct shear test to apply the stepwise vertical stresses. Changes in the roughness of the joint surfaces before and after the shear tests were examined and the difference between the two kinds of tests mentioned above was analyzed. In both tests, the shear resistance increased as the joint roughness increased and the maximum shear stress required for shearing the joint surface increased as the vertical stress increased. The peak friction angle obtained by the multi-stage direct shear tests was only 63% of that obtained by the individual direct shear tests. In the multi-stage direct shear test, the initial engagement of the concave-convex parts changes frequently during stepwise shearing process, which deforms the original roughness of a joint surface. Accordingly, the individual direct shear test is thought to be more effective when obtaining the friction angle of the rock joint surfaces. Limestone joint surfaces with smooth roughness of JRC value 4~8 were found to have peak friction angle of $47^{\circ}$, residual friction angle of $38^{\circ}$ and cohesion of 37 kPa.

  • Shear behavior of joint plane has been investigated considering the magnitude of normal stresses and initial surface roughness. Shear strength of joint plane has been measured by performing the multi-stage shear test in which applied normal stress level has been increased stepwise. Multi-stage shear test within the specified normal stress range has been repeated and two types of strength parameter variation have been observed: type 1 - both cohesion and friction angle decrease, type 2 - cohesion decrease and friction angle increase. Trends of strength parameter variation for the three rock types, gneiss, granite and shale, have been investigated and the influence of initial roughness of joint plane on the sequential shear strength change for the repeated multi-stage shear tests also has been analyzed.

  • Soil-rock interface, mainly founded in Granite region of Korea, is known as one of the important factor of the slope failure at the rainfall due to smaller shear strength than soil itself. However, research of the effect on slope stability by soil-rock interfaces is insufficient. Therefore, a series of direct shear tests were performed in order to investigate the effect of soil-rock interface on slope stability. The method of tests is to get sand itself and sand-artificial rock interface shear strength from different grain size of sands and artificial rock samples. The results of tests show that the friction angle of interface depends primarily on particle size and surface roughness. Interface friction angle ratio ${\mu}(={\delta}/{\Phi})$ is in the range of 0.75 ~ 0.96, this results indicate that interface friction angle is smaller than sand itself.

  • Anisotropic shear strength of rock joints is studied based on the artificially fractured specimens using experimental and analytical methods. Series of direct shear tests are performed to obtain the strength, stiffness and friction angle of joints under various low normal stresses and shearing directions. The results of shear strength and stiffness show anisotropic value according to shearing direction under low normal stress specially less than 2.45 MPa. But, the effect of joint roughness on strength decreases with increasing normal stress. To estimate more effectively the peak shear strength under low normal stress, the modified Barton's equation is suggested.

  • Both the roughness measurement tests and the multi-stage shear tests were carried out on the 110 rock joint samples in order to investigate the influences of rock type, joint roughness and normal stress on the shear behaviour of rock joints. Test samples were composed of quartz porphyry, dacite, granite and gneiss, which were classified into three detailed groups according to their JRC values. Roughness parameters of rock joints were analyzed by roughness measurement tests, and shear characteristics were also investigated by multi-stage shear tests. Both peak shear strength and shear stiffness were increased as both joint roughness and normal stress were increased, whereas dilation angles showed lower values at the lower roughness and higher normal stress conditions. Besides, shear characteristics obtained from all tests of four different rock types with different rock strengths showed irrelevant details, therefore the influences of both joint roughness and normal stress on shear behaviors were found to be more considerable than the strength of intact rock. The results obtained from both multi-stage shear tests and direct shear tests were finally compared, where the dilation angles obtained from multi-stage shear tests were found to be valid only for the first normal stress conditions.

  • This study was aimed to see the effect of chemical grout on fresh granite joint shear strength. The grouting chemical used in this study was composed of 25% water glass. Direct shear tests were performed on the chemical filled joints, which had been made artificially with granite. The test results show that chemical grouted rock jonts have markedly reduced shear strength comparing with the ungrouted fresh joints and they sheared within chemical grout before the rock to rock contact had been established, while the ungrouted joint sheared between rock surfaces from the beginning of shear deformation. With chemical grouted joints the shear stress slowly reached its maximum without showing distinct peak shear strength. Therefore the shear stiffness of joints were decreased with increasing thickness of grout. but the shear strain at failure was increased with it.

  • This note presents the calculation of nominal area for rock core specimen under direct shear testing condition. The initial nominal area was assumed as ellipsoid, and the equations for calculating the nominal area are derived. The normalized shear displacement and normalized nominal area have an identical relationship regardless of the ellipsoid shape. New testing constants and the generalized method were suggested to calculate the decrease of the nominal area. The method was applied to calculate the direct shear testing data and the changes of result were discussed.

  • Surface roughness profiles were measured from 19 joint samples using a laser scanner, and Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were calculated from 30 sections in each sample. Although JRC values varied with the location of the section, the average JRC values from any three sections provides an adequate representation of the average JRC value for the entire surface well. Direct shear tests were performed on nine joints reproduced using molds of real joints in samples of gypsum. The peak friction angles (${\phi}_p$) showed a linear relationship with the average JRC values, yielding the following relationship: ${\phi}_p=41.037+1.046JRC$. However, the shear strengths measured by direct shear tests differed from those calculated using Barton's criterion. The relationship between calculated from direct shear tests and JRC measured from joint surfaces is defined as $JRC_R=f{\cdot}JRC$, and the correction coefficient f is was calculated as $f=3.15JRC^{-0.5}$, as calculated by regression. A modified shear-strength criterion, is proposed using the correction coefficient, ${\tau}={\sigma}_n{\cdot}tan(3.15JRC^{0.5}{\bullet}{\log}_{10}\frac{JCS}{{\sigma}_n}+{\phi}_b)$. This criterion may be effective in calculating the shear strength of moderately weathered rock joints and highly weathered rock joints with low strength and ductile behavior.

  • The roughness of rock joint is one of the most important parameters in developing the shear resistance and the tendency of dilation. Due to the damage accumulated with shearing displacement, the roughness angle is lowered continuously. It is known that dilation, shear strength hardening, and softening are directly related to the degradation of asperities. Much effort has been directed to incorporate the complicated damage mechanism of asperities into a constitutive model fur rock joints. This study presents an elasto-plastic formulation of joint behavior including elastic deformability, dilatancy and asperity surface damage. It is postulated that the plastic portion of incremental displacement 7an be decomposed into contributions from both sliding along the asperity surface and damage of asperity. Numerical cyclic shear tests are presented to illustrate th? performance of the derived incremental stress-displacement relation. A laboratory cyclic shear test is also simulated. Numerical examples reveal that the elasto-plastic joints model is promising.
