  • Natural forest stand plays a very important role to understand the forest ecosystem in Korea, in which there is no ancient forests aye left. Several old growth Korean fir stands were studied to determine their naturalness. Internationally accept-ed criteria for virgin or natural forests were used and the changes in several stages by stand dynamics were applied. Although the areas survey is limited in size, it was discovered that they clearly represent certain characteristics of naturalness. This study and collected data will hopefully be the starting point for the further studies for naturalness of forest in Korea in the future.

  • Archaeological investigations carried out in the Chilgok Housing Land Development Area have identified large-scale settlements from the Bronze Age and Three Kingdoms periods. The settlement site in Dongcheon-dong, Daegu was found to include sites of pit dwellings, buildings with elevated floors, stone coffin tombs, wells, catchment basins, stone mounds, furrows, cropland, moats, and river channels. These findings offer insight into diverse aspects of settlements during the Bronze Age. This study analyzed the species of trees that produced the materials for eight wooden artifacts excavated from a Bronze-Age river channel site. The analysis identified two examples of Pinus spp., two examples of Abies spp., and four examples of Quercus sp. The three artifacts of undetermined use were made using wood from Pinus spp. and Abies spp. Among the five artifacts identified as building components, one was made from Pinus spp. and four were made from Quercus sp.

  • On the basin of RAPD analysis, genetic diversity and structure of the natural populations of Abies holophylla was estimated by AMOVA procedure. The average value of percent of polymorphic markers was 71.9%. Most variation existed among individuals within population(80.2%). Genetic differentiation among populations(${\Phi}_{ST}$) was 0.198. When the populations were grouped as two region(i.e., Taebaek and Sobaek Mountain Regions), 8.5% of the total genetic variation was explained as regional differences. The heterogeneity of molecular variance among populations was investigated with Bartlett's test, which revealed that populations of Mt. Taebaek and Mt. Gariwang were more heterogeneous. Generally, the populations of Taebaek Mountain Reion were more heterogeneous than those of Sobaek Mountain Reion. Finally, the applicability of AMOVA to the populations frenetic study was discussed in comparison with other measures of genetic differentiation which were widely used.

  • This study aims to clarify the effect of forest management practices(thinning and pruning) in forest hydrological processes on electrical conductivity to get the fundamental information on the facilitation of purifying water quality after forestry practices. Rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, soil and stream water were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis in Kwangnung Experimental Forest for 6 months from March 1 to August 4, 1998. In case of deviding into forest hydrological processes, multiple regression equations of electrical conductivity and total amount of anion, $NO{_3}^-$ of throughfall, stemflow, soil water of management site in Abies holophylla shows high significance. And multiple regression equations of electrical conductivity and total amount of anion, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$ of throughfall, stemflow, soil water of non-management site in Abies holophylla shows high significance. Multiple regression equations of electrical conductivity and $NO{_3}^-$, before non-rain days of throughfall, stemflow, soil water of management site in Pinus koraiensis shows high significance. And multiple regression equations of electrical conductivity and total amount of ion, $NO{_3}^-$, $K^+$, pH, total amount of anion of throughfall, stemflow, soil water of non-management site in Plinus koraiensis shows high significance. Multiple regression equations of electrical conductivity and pricipitation, total amount of ion, $Na^+$ of stream water in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis shows high significance. In case of combining into forest hydrological processes, multiple regression equations of electrical conductivity and total amount of cation and anion, $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, and pH in rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, soil and stream water shows high significance.

  • We investigated 12 plots using Herles' diversity of structure feature calculation method, which is based on the Shannon-Weaver-Index for estimation of species diversity. This study sought to facilitate a more systematic understanding of the structure of the forest stands in the Korean fir natural forest in Naeseorak. Although the change in the forest structure is dependent on the change in phase, factors of the natural forest were confirmed by associating individual structure features. As shown in the results of diversity of structure features, the diversity of the structure of the fir tree natural forest in Naeseorak was relatively low. The association between species diversity and overall factors (diversity) related with the change in the structure was found to be weak. The association between the number of trees and the diversity of forest structure stands was moderate, showing that the higher the number of trees, the less diverse the forest structure is. In most of the investigated plots, stem volume and volume of dead tree were associated with the height of natural regeneration, but these were not associated with other factors. Height of natural regeneration was found to be correlated to stand density, crown area and crown class, whereas tree height and BHD did not have any association with other factors. Overall, the results of the investigation are helpful in understanding the change in the structure of Korean fir natural forest. Further investigation with more plots is required.

  • Fish pathogens cause not only economic damages to fish farming but also infectious pathogens known as a zoonotic agent. Since the continued use of antibiotics to control fish pathogens entails side effects, materials of natural origin need to be developed. The purpose of this study is to discover coniferous essential oils with excellent antibacterial effects in order to develop antibiotic alternatives. We have extracted essential oils using hydro-distillation from the leaves of Abies holophylla, Pinus thunbergii, Pinus parviflora, Tsuga sieboldii, and Pinus rigitaeda, which are all Pinaceae family. And, we have evaluated antibacterial activity with the extracted essential oils against Edwardsiella tarda, Photobacterium damselae, Streptococcus parauberis, and Lactococcus garvieae, which are fish pathogens. As a result, the essential oils from A. holophylla and P. thunbergii showed the selectively strong antibacterial activity against E. tarda and P. damselae, which are gram-negative bacteria. From GC-MS analysis, it was identified that main component of A. holophylla essential oils are (-)-bornyl acetate (29.45%), D-limonene (20.47%), and camphene (11.73%), and that of P. thunbergii essential oils is α-pinene (59.81%). In addition, we found three compounds: neryl acetate, (-)-borneol, and (-)-carveol, which are oxygenated monoterpenes. These exist in a very small amount but exhibit the same efficacy as essential oil. Therefore, we expect that A. holophylla and P. thunbergii essential oils having excellent growth inhibitory effect against gram-negative fish pathogens can be used as biological products such as feed additives and fishery products.
