The vacuum interrupter (VI) is used for medium-voltage switching circuits due to its abilities and advantages as a compacted environmental friendly circuit breaker. In general, the application of a sufficiently strong axial magnetic field (AMF) permits the arc to be maintained in a diffused mode to a high-current vacuum arc. A full understanding of the vacuum arc physics is very important since it can aid to improve the performance of vacuum interrupter. In order to closely examine the vacuum arc phenomena, it is necessary to predict the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics by the multidisciplinary numerical modeling, which is coupled with the electromagnetic and hydrodynamic fields, simultaneously. In this study, we have investigated the effect of changing geometrical parameters for electromagnetic behaviors of high-current vacuum arcs with two different types of AMP contacts, which are coil-type and cup-type, using a commercial finite element analysis (FEA) package, ANSYS. The present results are compared with those of MAXWELL 3D, a reliable electromagnetic analysis software, for verification.

The battery electrode of a mobile phone is made of layered polymer coated on aluminum foils and the hot rolling process is applied to increase the density per volume of an electrode for a high capacity battery. The flatness of batteries surfaces should be less than $2{\mu}m$. To satisfy the required flatness, the deformation of roll surface due to bending and heating of the roll should be minimized. Complicated hot oil paths of $100^{\circ}C$ inside the roll are required for heating the polymer layers. FEA was used to calculate thermal deformations and temperatures distributions of the roller. Based on FEA, a modified surface curvature called a crown roll was suggested and this gave the area of 30% improved flatness compared with a flat roll. The flat roll satisfied the flatness of $2{\mu}m$ in the length of 340 mm and the crown roll resulted in the longer length of 460 mm. Experiments to measure the temperature distribution and thermal strain were performed and compared with FEA. There were only 6% difference between two results.

According to the increase of the channel length with fixed width/length, characteristic curves of drain current as a function of gate bias voltage of indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) thin-film transistors moved to a positive direction of gate voltage, and field-effect mobility decreased. In case of fixed length and width of channel, field-effect mobility was lower and subthreshold slope was larger when drain bias voltage was higher. Due to large work function of IGZO, band bending at the junction region between IGZO channel and source/drain electrodes was expected to be in opposite direction to that between silicon and metal electrodes; this could explain the above results.
2-D and 3-D resistivity surveys were carried out at the Deok-In2 levee during the period of arid and rainy seasons to assess the waterproof effectiveness of sheet pile and routing sections and detect the location of pipings. Inverted resistivity sections clearly indicated the boundaries of sheet pile and grouting sections and the locations of pipings observed at the ground surface. It is necessary that proper survey parameters are determined considering inverted depth and resolution and contacting resistance is decreased to obtain favorable result.
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and gelatin (GEL) blend membranes were prepared by solution casting method under a high electric field. SEM observation of the membrane showed that gelatin rich domains were elongated and oriented to the direction of the applied electric field in PVA matrix. This can be attributed to the electrostatic emulsifying effects due to a reduction in interfacial tension. In addition, it was observed through WAXD and swelling measurements that the degree of crystallinity of membranes increased with applied electric field strength. This may be interpreted to be caused by the orientation effect of GEL domains in the blend membrane, and the self-annealing effect due to some heat generated from high electric field during casting.

Generally, in the calculation of ground resistance in the grounding system, the method measuring ground potential rise which is caused by low frequency source injection is used. But both lightning and surge impulse re very harmful to electric equipment. In this connection, this paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of transient behavior of ground impedances when lightening current is injected to the electric rod the experimental results are agreement with the theoretical analysis. In addition, the states on the behavior of ground electrodes under impulse currents due to lighting strokes are presented. And the impulse impedance reductions caused by discharge in the soils are presented.
Recent earth systems not only make earth resistance decreased by installing earth electrode but also are demanded by earth construction for the protection of human life and equipments through total investigation about circumstances. Layer constructions in Jeju island consist of multi-layer of scoria, rocks and shale except clay layers on the surface, which needs the construction of the coring earth electrode suitable in the condition of the area. For this reason, we've used the coring earth electrode. But the coring earth electrode is expected to slow down the performance of this equipment according to the progress of time changing the effects. It is also applied for the stability of earth system construction and management after the construction work analyzing the condition of the earth system. Therefore, this is actually focused on the analysis on measuring the earth resistance and the soil resistivity that cover the range where the remarkable contrast can be expected to be seen in the layer structures.

The demand for electric vehicles has increased because of environmental regulations. The lithium-ion battery, the most widely used type of battery in electric vehicles, is composed of a cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte. It is manufactured according to the pole plate, assembly, and formation processes. To improve battery performance and increase manufacturing efficiency, the manufacturing process must be optimized. To do so, simulation can be used to reduce wasted resources and time, and a finite-element method can be utilized. For high simulation quality, it is essential to reflect the material properties of the electrode by considering the pores. However, the material properties of electrodes are difficult to derive through measurement. In this study, the representative volume element method, which is a homogenization method, was applied to estimate the representative material properties of the electrode considering the pores. The representative volume element method assumes that the strain energy before and after the conversion into a representative volume is conserved. The method can be converted into one representative property, even when nonhomogeneous materials are mixed in a unit volume. In this study, the material properties of the electrode considering the pores were derived. The results should be helpful in optimizing the electrode manufacturing process and related element technologies.
In field surveys using the dipole-dipole electrical resistivity method, we often encounter negative apparent resistivity. The term 'negative apparent resistivity' refers to apparent resistivity values with the opposite sign to surrounding data in a pseudosection. Because these negative apparent resistivity values have been regarded as measurement errors, we have discarded the negative apparent resistivity data. Some people have even used negative apparent resistivity data in an inversion process, by taking absolute values of the data. Our field experiments lead us to believe that the main cause for negative apparent resistivity is neither measurement errors nor the influence of self potentials. Furthermore, we also believe that it is not caused by the effects of induced polarization. One possible cause for negative apparent resistivity is the subsurface geological structure. In this study, we provide some numerical examples showing that negative apparent resistivity can arise from geological structures. In numerical examples, we simulate field data using a 3D numerical modelling algorithm, and then extract 2D sections. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the negative apparent resistivity can be caused by geological structures modelled by U-shaped and crescent-shaped conductive models. Negative apparent resistivity usually occurs when potentials increase with distance from the current electrodes. By plotting the voltage-electrode position curves, we could confirm that when the voltage curves intersect each other, negative apparent resistivity appears. These numerical examples suggest that when we observe negative apparent resistivity in field surveys, we should consider the possibility that the negative apparent resistivity has been caused by geological structure.
