  • To learn statistics meaningfully, we must provide an opportunity to experience the process of solving statistical problems with actual data. In particular, exploration questions at the problem setting stage are important for students to successfully guide them from the beginning to the conclusion of the statistical problem solving process. Therefore, in this study, a mixed research method was carried out for the exploration questions of pre-service mathematics teachers during the problem setting stage. As a result, some pre-service mathematics teachers categorized incorrect statistical questions because they did not clearly define the meaning or variables of the questions in the process of categorizing them from possible questions. In addition, questions that cannot be solved statistically were categorized due to misconceptions about statistical knowledge. Second, only 50% of the pre-service mathematics teachers met all 6 conditions suitable for solving statistical problems, while there maining they met only a few conditions. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is as follows. First of all, they should be given the opportunity to experience all the statistical problem solving processes through teacher education because they do not have enough experience in statistical problem solving. Secondly, since the problem setting stage is very important in the statistical problem solving process, a series of subdivided processes are also required in the problem setting stage.

  • Climate change threatens the security of domestic water resources in South Korea. To overcome the potential water shortage, various approaches are being studied by alterning the operation of dams or by integrated operation of multiple dams and reservoirs. However, most of the related researches were developed and applied for multi-purpose dams, and few studies were conducted for the hydropower dams. The main purpose of the hydropower dam is to generate electric energy; however, the potential water shortage due to prolonged droughts brings the idea to supply water from the hydropower dam in the basin. To that end, it is required to estimate the water supply ability of the hydropower dams. In this study, we proposed a methodology to classify the hydropower dam into a "storage-type" and "run-of-river type" dam. The proposed approach was demonstrated using the hydropower dams located in North-han River basin. The results of this study are expected to contribute for further analysis of the hydropower dams, such as evaluation of water supply capacity and drought mitigation purpose operation of the hydropower dams.

  • In this study, flow patterns in the ice-harbor fishway were analyzed according to fluctuations of the upstream water level, an increase of weir interval, and the presence or absence of orifices using a three-dimensional commercial numerical model, Flow-3D. In order to prove the suitability of the numerical simulation results, the flow velocity and flow rate at the exit of the fishway were observed using a 3D ultrasonic velocimetry on an actual ice-harbor fishway installed downstream of the Daegok bridge in Gyeongan-Cheon. Four types of turbulence modules can be selected for the Flow-3D model. As a result of verification with observation data, the RNG model best described the flow characteristics in the ice-harbor fishway. The velocity structure in the fishway according to fluctuations of the upstream water level was simulated. The results showed that the plunging flow and the streaming flow were mixed at the lowest water level. When the water level increased about 10 cm or more from the lowest water level, the plunging flow disappeared in all pools and only the streaming flow occurred. Contrary to expectations, even when the water level is rose a little, the flow simply occurred mainly on the streaming flow. If the interval between the weirs is increased, both the plunging flow and the streaming flow are showed continued even if the water level rises. In addition, compared to the case where there are no orifices at the bottom of the weirs, the plunging flow tends to be generated in several pools. It is necessary to prevent blocking orifices through active management so that various flow patterns in the fishway can be generated in multiple pools.

  • This study predicted waxy corn harvest date in South Korea using 30-year (1991-2020) hindcasts (1-6 month lead) produced by the Pusan National University Coupled General Circulation Model (PNU CGCM)-Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) chain. To estimate corn harvest date, the cumulative temperature is used, which accumulated the daily observed and predicted temperatures from the seeding date (5 April) to the reference temperature (1,650~2,200℃) for harvest. In terms of the mean air temperature, the hindcasts with a bias correction (20.2℃) tends to have a cold bias of about 0.1℃ for the 6 months (April to September) compared to the observation (20.3℃). The harvest date derived from bias-corrected hindcasts (DOY 187~210) well simulates one from observation (DOY 188~211), despite a slight margin of 1.1~1.3 days. The study shows the possibility of obtaining the gridded (5 km) daily temperature and corn harvest date information based on the cumulative temperature in advance for all regions of South Korea.

  • To enable the widespread use of buckwheat and create novel consumer demands through improved food processing techniques, we compared the quality characteristics of roasted groats following different processing and brewing methods for common and tartary buckwheat. The various processing steps resulted in significant reductions in rutin content for both buckwheat species, while the quercetin content increased in the tartary buckwheat. The fully processed tea products showed dramatic differences in rutin content, which varied based on the buckwheat species, formulation, and brewing method. Tartary buckwheat contained an average of 61 times more rutin than common buckwheat. The tartary buckwheat variety, Hwanggeum-miso, was used to determine an optimal roasting temperature of 70-80℃. Finally, we suggest that consumers who want buckwheat tea rich in rutin would prefer hand-drip-extracted tea, while those who want tea with less bitterness, sweetness, and good flavor would prefer the cold-brewed method.

  • Amidst the global climate crisis, dam operation policies formulated under the stationary climate assumption could lead to unsatisfactory water management. In this work, we assessed status-quo performance of the Yongdam Dam in Korea under various climatic stresses in flood risk reduction and water supply reliability for 2021-2040. To this end, we employed a decision-centric framework equipped with a stochastic weather generator, a conceptual streamflow model, and a machine-learning reservoir operation rule. By imposing 294 climate perturbations to dam release simulations, we found that the current operation rule of the Yongdam dam could redundantly secure water storage, while inefficiently enhancing the supply reliability. On the other hand, flood risks were likely to increase substantially due to rising mean and variability of daily precipitation. Here, we argue that the current operation rules of the Yongdam Dam seem to be overly focused on securing water storage, and thus need to be adjusted to efficiently improve supply reliability and reduce flood risks in downstream areas.

  • In a head-mounted display (HMD) for virtual-reality applications, a narrow viewing angle is preferred to the usual, wide viewing angle because the HMD is positioned close in front of the user's eyes, and the display position is fixed. In this paper, we propose a new back-light unit (BLU) for implementing a narrow viewing angle, which is suitable for a HMD. By optimizing the scattering patterns in the light-guide-plate and inverse-prism structures, the viewing angle and correlations between structural parameters in the BLU components are analyzed with ray-tracing simulations. As a result, a double-angle inverse-prism structure incorporating the scattering patterns of a light-guide plate is chosen, which results in a 14% increase in center luminance, a 16% decrease in the vertical viewing angle, and a light efficiency of up to 70%, compared to a conventional BLU. Thus, the new BLU system is expected to be applied in a high-efficiency liquid crystal display.

  • This study investigates the behavior of a jointless bridge that integrates superstructure and abutment without an expansion joint. Based on the sensitivity analyses conducted in previous studies, a shell-based model was determined to be the most suitable numerical analysis model for jointless bridges due to the similarity of the model's results compared with the obtained displacement shape, which was influenced by relative errors, precision, and practical aspects. Accordingly, the behavior of a jointless bridge was analyzed at various wall depths using shell element-based and solid element models. In addition, the results of MIDAS Civil and ABAQUS analysis programs were compared. In the case of semi-integrated bridges (A and B), the displacement decreased as the wall depth increased due to the ground reaction force in Case 1 under a linear spring condition and +30℃. In the case where temperature was -30℃, the change in displacement was small because the ground reaction did not occur. As for bridge C (a fully integrated alternating bridge) and bridge D (an integrated chest wall alternating bridge), the displacement decreased as the wall depth increased at both +30 and -30℃ due to pile resistance. As for the comparison between the analysis programs used, the relative error in Case 1 was small, whereas a significant difference in Case 2 was observed. The foregoing variation is possibly due to the difference in the application of the nonlinear spring in the programs.

  • The operation system of a shipping company is still maintaining the mainframe based terminal access environment or the client/server based environment. Nowadays shipping companies that try to migrate it into a web-based environment are increasing. However, in the transition, if the design is processed by the old configuration and knowledge without considering the characteristics of the web-based environment and shipping business, various security vulnerabilities will be revealed at the actual system operation stage, and system maintenance costs to fix them will increase significantly. Therefore, in the transition to a web-based environment, a security design must be carried out from the design stage to ensure system safety and to reduce security-related maintenance costs in the future. This paper examines the characteristics of various threat modeling techniques, selects suitable modeling technique for the operation system of a shipping company, applies data flow diagram and STRIDE threat modeling technique to shipping business, derives possible security threats from each component of the data flow diagram in the attacker's point of view, validates the derived threats by mapping them with attack library items, represents the attack tree having various attack scenarios that attackers can attempt to achieve their final goals, organizes into the checklist that has security check items, associated threats and security requirements, and finally presents 23 security requirements that can respond to threats. Unlike the existing general security requirements, the security requirements presented in this paper reflect the characteristics of shipping business because they are derived by analyzing the actual business of a shipping company and applying threat modeling technique. Therefore, I think that the presented security requirements will be of great help in the security design of shipping companies that are trying to proceed with the transition to a web-based environment in the future.

  • To increase the added value of peaches and utilize overproduced peaches, it is necessary to develop peach raw materials in various forms. In this study, usefulness of juice as raw material for vinegar was investigated by comparing and analyzing the characteristics of the traditional fermented vinegar prepared with 4 types of juice (fresh, refrigerated, boiled and frozen puree). Sugar content (6.20~6.50°Brix), total acidity (5.25~5.61%), pH (3.42~3.74), and acetic acid content (48.81~54.29 mg/mL) of the vinegar were all similar to existing traditional fermented vinegar. However, contents of total phenol and flavonoid were higher in vinegar prepared from refrigerated and boiled juice. Therefore, it was confirmed that boiled and refrigerated juice are very suitable as raw materials for traditional fermented peach vinegar, in particular, it was confirmed that boiled juice with a high content of total phenol and flavonoid can be used as a high value-added functional material. These results are considered to be important guidelines for developing high value-added raw materials for peaches.
