  • In this paper, we propose a buffer management scheme suitable for interactive multimedia services. We consider a typical delay optimization environment so that receiver buffer lengths vary according to the round trip time estimation. In this environment, we propose an optimization technique for minimizing the loss of information that may occur when a reduced buffer length forces I/P/B frames in the buffer to drop. We modeled our problem as a Knapsack Problem for which we used dynamic programing in order to find an approximate solution. The proposed technique is compared with the existing buffer management techniques. Through simulation studies, we found that our approach could increase PSNR, which is important to video quality.

  • We propose an effective packet marking algorithm for video streaming in DiffServ network. Because legacy packet markers such as srTCM(single rate three color marker) cannot distinguish the importance of packet, these markers can cause quality degradation of streaming during the network congestion period. Recently proposed TMS (Two Marker System) [4] shows effectiveness in such scenario that video streaming service is struggling with other types of service traffic. However, if many video streaming services co-exist in DiffServ network and result in competition among themselves, then both legacy packet markers and even TMS cannot prevent drastic streaming quality degradation. To cope with this, we suggest A-TCPM (Adaptive time sliding window Three Color Marker) algorithm. In this algorithm, an A-TCPM module decides the color of a racket based upon the probability which is lead by current channel status and frame importance ratio. Simulation results show that proposed A-TCPM algorithm can enhance streaming service quality especially when overbooked video streaming sessions struggle with themselves.

  • H.263 is an international standard of ITU-T that can makes the service such as video phone, video conference in the transmission line less than 64Kbps. This recommendation draft has used motion estimation/compensation, transform coding and quantizing methods. TMN5 used for the performance estimation of H.263 has fundamentally used DCT in transform coding method and presented quantizer for quantizing the DCT transform coefficient. This paper is presenting adaptive quantizer effectively able to quantize DCT coefficient considering the human visual sensitivity while the structure of TMN5 is maintaining. As quantizer that proposed DCT-based H.263 could make transmit more frame than TMN5 in a same transfer speed, it could lower the frame drop effect. And the luminance signal appeared the difference of -0.3 ~ +0.7dB in the average PSNR for the estimation of objective image quality and the chrominance signal appeared the improvement in about 1.5dB in comparision with TMN5. As a result it can attain the better image quality compared to TMN5 in the estimation of subjective image quality.

  • TMN5 has been used to evaluate the performance of H.263, the ITU-T/LBC standard of moving picture coding. As DCT is used as transform coding methods in TMN5, blocking effect exists seriously in reconstruction picture at low bit rate. In this pater, DWT is substituted for DCT and adaptive quantizer is designed while the structure of TMN5 is maintained to be excellent in the transplantation of conventional system. It has shown that average PSNR is reduced by 0.35dB in luminance but increased by 2dB in chrominance comparing with that of TMN5. As block effect is reduced in reconstruction picture, the subjective picture quality is better than that of TMN5. Picture drop is, also, reduced because much more frames are transmitted at same bit rate.
