  • In this study, we used NIR spectrum method instead of conventional HPLC method to shorten the analysis and manufacturing time of the loxoprofen products. Loxoprofen mixtures with other pharmaceutical additives were prepared and evaluated by the NIR spectrometer and the HPLC system. Validation of both methods was performed for specificity, accuracy and precision. NIR spectrometer method was validated and revealed proper results for the in-process quality control in the pharmaceutical field. In conclusion, NIR spectrometry can be replaced by HPLC method.

  • This study was carried out to analyze chemical components in burley tobacco using near infrared spectroscopy(NIRS). Samples were collected in '96 and '97 crop year. Calibration equations were developed by modified partial least square. The standard error performance(SEP) of '96 crop year samples between NIRS and standard laboratory analysis were 0.25% for nicotine, 0.18% for total nitrogen, 0.59% for crude ash, 0.32% for ether extracts, and 0.14% for chlorine, respectively. The analytical results of '97 crop year samples were similar to those of '96 crop year samples. The analytical result of '97 crop year samples analyzed by '96 calibration equation was more inaccurate than that of '96 crop year samples. The SEP of '96 or '97 crop year samples applying calibration equation derived from '96 plus '97 crop year samples was similar to that of '96 or '97 crop year samples analyzed by '96 or '97 calibration equation, respectively. The SEP of '97 crop year samples analyzed by calibration equation derived from '96 plus '97 crop year samples was more accurate than that of '97 crop year samples analyzed by '96 calibration equation. To improve the analytical inaccuracy caused by the difference of crop year between calibration and prediction samples, we need to include the prediction sample spectra which were different from calibration sample spectra in recalibration sample spectra, and then develop recalibration equation. The NIRS can apply to analyze burley leaf tobacco, leaf process or tobacco manufacturing process which were required the rapid analytical result.

  • Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been widely applied in various field, since it is nondestructive and no sample preparation is required. In this paper, NIR spectroscopy was used for the determination of naproxen in a commercial pharmaceutical preparation. NIR spectroscopy was used to determine the content of naproxen in intact naproxen tablets containing 250 mg ($65.8\%$ nominal concentration) by collecting NIR spectra in the range of $1100{\sim}1750nm$. The laboratory-made samples had $46.1{\sim}85.5\%$ nominal naproxen concentration. The measurements were made by reflection using a fiber-optic probe and calibration was carried out by partial least square regression (PLSR). Model validation was performed by randomly splitting the data set into calibration and validation data set (63 samples as a calibration data set and 42 samples as a validation data set). The developed NIR calibration gave results comparable to the known values of tablets in a laboratorial manufacturing process with standard error of calibration (SEC) and standard error of prediction (SEP) of $1.06\%\;and\;1.04\%$, respectively. The NIR method showed good accuracy and repeatability. NIR spectroscopic determination in intact tablets allowed the potential use of real time monitoring for a running production process.

  • In this study, we investigated the kinematical properties of the L1521F-IRS in Taurus region using HCN (J=1-0) molecular line. The high resolution mapping has carried out by $5{\times}5$ point observations covering $3.7'{\times}3.7'$ area using a 12-m telescope of Arizona Radio Observatory in Tucsan, USA. L1521F which harbors the faint infrared L1521F-IRS, displayed a strong central concentration of integrated intensity in HCN without serious molecular depletion. It showed a symmetric kinematical structure with the opposite infall motion in either side of the central cores. It is a direct evidence of bipolar outflows in the core of L1521F.

  • A non-invasive spectroscopic method is presented for the measurement of pulmonary edema. Both early diagnosis and quantitative edema estimates were investigated. The spectroscopic determination of pulmonary edema involved the acquisition of diffuse reflectance spectra in the near-infrared (NIR) region with change in water concentration - water is the main constituent of edema fluid. Pulmonary edema was induced into the excised perfused lungs of seven animals by elevating the hydrostatic pressure. Estimates of edema were ascertained from a partial least squares regression of the measured spectral response. Actual edema was determined from the change (increase) in total lung weight. Estimates in relative lung weight increases due to in vitro edema were made with the near infrared spectra. The results revealed that fluid accumulation produced spectral changes in the O-H and C-H absorptions as well as scattering changes in the spectra. Histology of the lung was used to verify the presence or absence of interstitial and alveolar edema. Results demonstrated that near infrared spectroscopy might provide a new tool for clinical assessment of pulmonary edema.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a the reflection technique with near infrared (NIR) radiation for estimating soil components. NIR reflectance was scanned at 2nm intervals from 1100 to 2500nm with an InfraAlyzer 500 (Bran & Luebbe Co.). Over 400 soil sample from fields of different crops and land-use over Youngnam and Honam regions were used to obtain mean diffuse reflection of the soil for the calibration and validation of the calibration set in estimating moisture, organic matter (OM) and total nitrogen (T-N) of the soils. Multiple linear regression (MLR) was used to evaluate the correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Reflection pattern of NIR spectra for finely sized sample (<0.5mm) and coarsely sized soil(<2mm) did not show much difference. The results showed that NIR spectroscopy and coarsely sized soil (<2mm) did not show much difference. The results showed that NIR spectroscopy could be used as a routine soil testing method in estimating OM, moisture, T-N in soil samples simultaneously.

  • Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy(NIRS) was used to determine the humic acids in soil samples from the fields of different crops and land-use over Youngnam and Honam regions in Korea. An InfraAlyzer 500 scanning spectrophotometer was obtained near infrared relectance spectra of soil at 2-nm intervals from 1100 to 2500nm. Multiple linear regression(MLR) or partial least square regression (PLSR) was used to evaluate a NIRS method for the rapid and nondestructive determination of humic acid, fulvic acid and its total contents in soils. The raw spectral data(log 1/R) can be used for estimating humic acid, fulvic acid and its total contents in soil by MLR procedure between the content of a given constituent and the spectral response of several bands. In which the predicted results for fulvic acid is the best in the constituents. The new spectral data are converted from the raw spectra by PLSR method such as the first derivative of each spectrum can also be used to predict humic acid and fulvic acid of the soil samples. A low SEC, SEP and a high coefficient of correlation in the calibration and validation stages enable selection of the best manipulation. But a simple calibration and prediction method for determining humic acid and fulvic acid should be selected under similar accuracy and precision of prediction. NIRS technique may be an effective method for rapid and nondestructive determination for humic acid, fulvic acid and its total contents in soils.

  • A convenient algorithm for optimizing wavelength selection in multiple linear regression (MLR) has been developed. MOP (MLP Optimization Program) has been developed to test all possible MLR calibration models in a given spectral range and finally find an optimal MLR model with external validation capability. MOP generates all calibration models from all possible combinations of wavelength, and simultaneously calculates SEC (Standard Error of Calibration) and SEV (Standard Error of Validation) by predicting samples in a validation data set. Finally, with determined SEC and SEV, it calculates another parameter called SAD (Sum of SEC, SEV, and Absolute Difference between SEC and SEV: sum(SEC+SEV+Abs(SEC-SEV)). SAD is an useful parameter to find an optimal calibration model without over-fitting by simultaneously evaluating SEC, SEV, and difference of error between calibration and validation. The calibration model corresponding to the smallest SAD value is chosen as an optimum because the errors in both calibration and validation are minimal as well as similar in scale. To evaluate the capability of MOP, the determination of benzene content in unleaded gasoline has been examined. MOP successfully found the optimal calibration model and showed the better calibration and independent prediction performance compared to conventional MLR calibration.

  • Apple fruit grading is largely dependant on skin color degree. This work reports about the possibility of nondestructive assessment of apple fruit color using infrared(NIR) reflectance spectroscopy. NIR spectra of apple fruit were collected in wavelength range of 1100~2500nm using an InfraAlyzer 500C(Bran+Luebbe). Calibration as calculated by the standard analysis procedures MLR(multiple linear regression) and stepwise, was performed by allowing the IDAS software to select the best regression equations using raw spectra of sample. Color degree of apple skin was expressed as 2 factors, anthocyanin content by purification and a-value by colorimeter. A total of 90 fruits was used for the calibration set(54) and prediction set(36). For determining a-value, the calibration model composed 6 wavelengths(2076, 2120, 2276, 2488, 2072 and 1492nm) provided the highest accuracy : correlation coefficient is 0.913 and standard error of prediction is 4.94. But, the accuracy of prediction result for anthocyanin content determining was rather low(R of 0.761).

  • The purpose of this research was to find out suitable soil sample preparation and sample holding tools for NIR reflection radiation for estimating soil components. NIR reflectance was scanned at 2nm intervals from 1,100 to 2,500nm with an InfraAlyzer 500(Bran+Luebbe Co.). Coarse(2.0mm) and fine(0.5mm) soil sample and various sample holding tools were used to obtain mean diffuse reflection of the soil for the calibration and validation of the calibration set in estimating moisture, organic matter and total nitrogen of the soils. Multiple linear regression was used to obtain the best correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Correlation of NIR spectra for finely and coarsely sized soil did not show much difference. The standard errors of prediction(SE) using different types of sample holding tools for organic matter, total nitrogen and soil moisture were better than 0.765, 0.041 and 0.63% respectively. From the results it can be concluded that NIR spectroscopy with flow type cell could be used as a fast routine testing method in quantitative determination of organic matter, total nitrogen and soil moisture.
