  • This study presents a well spacing design for coalbed methane(CBM) reservoirs using the experimental results of methane gas adsorption measurement of coal samples obtained from North Kalimantan Island, Indonesia. The gas productivity analysis shows that the cumulative gas production increases as the Langmuir volume increases. This indicates that the maximum gas adsorption directly affects the gas production. In addition, the maximum gas production increases with the increase of reservoir permeability, and the dewatering period is shortened. In particular, the cumulative gas production increases as the production influence area increases. However, when comparing productivity per unit well, the maximum cumulative gas production is found between 2,000 ft of depth and 80-160 acres of the influence area. When reservoir depth and production influence area are considered simultaneously, the results of the appropriate well depth and spacing calculations show that gas productivity is highest between 600-2,000 ft. In this case, it is appropriate to design well spacing in the range of 80-160 acres. Therefore, well spacing design considering coalbed depth in undeveloped CBM reservoirs can be accomplished using gas sorption test results from coal samples.

  • Development of a reservoir pressure core sampler (PCS) with a built-in data logging system (DLS) for recording real-time temperature and pressure observations is critical in domestic hydrocarbon production to accurately measure and monitor reserves of shale gas, coalbed methane, and gas-hydrate. Another purpose of this new technology is to minimize the loss of gas from the core as the drill core is collected. This is accomplished by maintaining the pressure of the sample from the moment the drill core is obtained at depth, thus allowing an accurate analysis of shale gas, coalbed methane gas, and gashydrate within the core. Currently, the United States and European countries have monopolized the development and marketability of PCS technologies. We are thus developing a reservoir PCS by analyzing the operating principle and mechanisms of the existing PCS, and by conducting tests on the existing PCS. We further aim to develop a PCS with a maximum operating pressure of 100 bar, a maximum operating temperature of $-20^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$, and a pressure loss rate of 10%.

  • With their wide geographical distribution, unconventional resources are continuously compared against conventional resources, but their development is expanding because TRRs (Technical Recoverable Resources) are similar to conventional resources. In particular, there is active development of unconventional gas resources such as shale gas, tight gas, CBM (coalbed methane) and gas hydrate. However, it is difficult to calculate the material properties of unconventional resources, especially the gas content, with current geophysical logging technology. Additionally, some overseas companies have monopolies on related equipment and materials. Therefore, this study developed a reservoir PCS (Pressure Core Sampler). It can collect core samples without gaseous loss by maintaining high pressure from the moment the core is sampled and record pressure and temperature in real time. Successful performance testing was also carried out for official verification of the manufactured PCS. The reservoir PCS will contribute to the acquisition of geophysical well logging data as well as accurate and reliable cores.

  • Seismic inversion is a high-resolution tool to delineate the subsurface structures which may contain oil or gas. On the other hand, marine controlled-source electromagnetic (mCSEM) inversion can be a direct tool to indicate hydrocarbon. Thus, the joint inversion using both EM and seismic data together not only reduces the uncertainties but also takes advantage of both data simultaneously. In this paper, we have developed a simultaneous joint inversion approach for the direct estimation of reservoir petrophysical parameters, by linking electromagnetic and seismic data through rock physics model. A cross-gradient constraint is used to enhance the resolution of the inversion image and the maximum likelihood principle is applied to the relative weighting factor which controls the balance between two disparate data. By applying the developed algorithm to the synthetic model simulating the simplified gas field, we could confirm that the high-resolution images of petrophysical parameters can be obtained. However, from the other test using the synthetic model simulating an anticline reservoir, we noticed that the joint inversion produced different images depending on the model constraint used. Therefore, we modified the algorithm which has different model weighting matrix depending on the type of model parameters. Smoothness constraint and Marquardt-Levenberg constraint were applied to the water-saturation and porosity, respectively. When the improved algorithm is applied to the anticline model again, reliable porosity and water-saturation of reservoir were obtained. The inversion results indicate that the developed joint inversion algorithm can be contributed to the calculation of the accurate oil and gas reserves directly.

  • Time-lapse seismic surveys make repeated seismic surveys at different stages of oil production of a hydrocarbon reservoir to monitor changes in reservoir like fluid saturation. Since the repeatable surface seismic measurements can identify fluid types and map fluid saturations, oil and gas companies can make much more informed decision during not only production but also drilling and development. If time-lapse seismic surveys compare 3D seismic surveys, the time-lapse surveys are widely called as 4D seismic. A meaningful time-lapse interpretation is based on the repeatability of seismic surveys, which mainly depends on improved positioning and reduced noise (if surveys were designed properly through a feasibility study). The time-lapse interpretation can help oil and gas companies to maximize oil and gas recovery. This paper discusses about time-lapse seismic surveys mainly focused on feasibility, repeatability, data processing and interpretation.

  • The cleat system in coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs is generally occupied by water which liberated during the coalification process, and behavior of water have influence on CBM production performance. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the effect of the water saturation to operate the degasification process and predict the CBM production performance properly. In this study, type curve analyses were performed on CBM reservoirs under various water saturation to improve the prediction of production performance. A CBM reservoir models with fully-, modestly-, and undersaturated reservoir were built to get production data using GEM by CMG Ltd., and the data were matched with Fetkovich, Palacio-Blasingame(P-B), and Agarwal-Gardner (A-G) type curve. The results showed that undersaturated reservoir was successfully matched by A-G type curve, while the Fetkovich type curve was inappropriate for matching in the late time. The modestly saturated model could be almost corresponded with all the type curve methods at late production period. For the fully saturated model, after peak production had been reached, both P-B and A-G methods showed a proper match to the reservoir production data without long-term production period. Based on the results, merit and demerit of each type curve under specific water saturation were analyzed and listed. Therefore, it is believed that the production data analysis with proper type curve model considering water saturation can be performed to predict accurate production performance.

  • In this paper, we will introduce rock physics modeling technique, which interrelate reservoir properties with seismic properties, and apply the technique to the Donghae-1 gas reservoir. From well-log data analysis, we obtained velocityporosity (Vp-$\phi$) relations for each formation. These relations can used to predict porosity from seismic data. In addition, we analyzed permeability data, which were obtained from core measurements and computational rock physics simulations. We then obtained permeability-porosity ($\kappa-\phi$) relations. Combining $\kappa-\phi$ with Vp-$\phi$ relations, we finally present quantitative Vp-$\kappa$ relations. As to Vp-$\phi$ modeling, we found that the degree of diagenesis and clay contents increase with depth. As to Vp-$\kappa$ relations, though \kappa-\phi relations are almost identical for all formations, we could obtain distinct Vp-$\kappa$ relations due to Vp-$\phi$ variations. In conclusion, the rock physics modeling, which bridges between seismic properties and reservoir properties, can be a very robust tool for quantitative reservoir characterization with less uncertainty.

  • In this study we have attempted to evaluate the technical feasibility of "BB-HY", which is depleted gas reservoir as a gas storage field, using the commercial compositional simulator "ECLIPSE 300". The "BB-HY" reservoir has an initial gas in place of 143 BCF which is relatively small, and its porosity and permeability are 19.5% and 50 md, respectively. For "BB-HY" gas reservoir, we have performed a feasibility analysis by investigating the cushion gas (or working gas), converting time to gas storage field, operation cycle, number of wells and the possible application of horizontal borehole as well. From the simulation results, it was found that the amount of cushion gas in "BB-HY" reservoir is required at least 50% of IGIP in order to operate stably as gas storage field. When one produces gas for longer time and hence the remaining gas in reservoir is less than optimal cushion gas, no technical problem was occurred as long as additional cushion gas is injected up to the optimal cushion gas. In the case of changing the operation cycle into producing gas for three months during winter season from producing five months, the result shows that either the cushion gas should be greater than 60% or the more number of wells should be drilled. Meanwhile, from the results of sensitivity analysis for the number of wells, in cases of operating six or eight vertical wells, the stable reproduction of the injected gas can not be possible in "BB-HY" gas reservoir since the remaining gas in reservoir is increased. Therefore, in "BB-HY" reservoir, at least ten vertical wells should be drilled for the stable operation of gas. This time, when three horizontal wells are additionally drilled including the existing two vertical wells, it was found that the operation of injection and reproduction of gas is relatively stable in "BB-HY" gas reservoir.
