  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of abdominal functional electrical stimulation on peak cough flow and forced vital capacity in patients with cervical spinal cord injury. Methods : The study examined 20 patients with cervical spinal cord injury. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups. All subjects performed conservative physical therapy for 30 minutes. The experimental group also underwent abdominal functional electrical stimulation for at least 20 minutes per day. Abdominal functional electrical stimulation was applied to the rectus abdominis muscle twice each day, three times a week, for four weeks. In all subjects, the peak cough flow was measured using a peak flow meter and forced vital capacity was assessed using a spirometer. Results : The experimental group showed a significant increase in peak cough flow and forced vital capacity in pre-post measurements (p<.05), while the control group showed a significant increase only in peak cough flow. Conclusion : These findings suggest that conservative physical therapy in combination with the abdominal functional electrical stimulation can improve peak cough flow and forced vital capacity in patients with cervical spinal cord injury.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate patient satisfaction for the spacial environment of the rehabilitative facilities, and by this to examine areas of patients' needs to develop patient-friendly improvement in spacial environment. 308 patients were surveyed at physical therapy centers of 6 hospitals or rehabilitative institutions in Daejeon with patient satisfaction questionnaire. The spatial environment satisfaction was categorized into 7 constructs and the data were statistically analyzed and compared by t-test and ANOVA according to the patient characteristics. As a result, inter-floor transfer was found to be the area with the least satisfaction, especially in the in-patient group. Locating floor level was the second lowest satisfied construct. Comfort was relatively highly satisfied construct overall, but patients with neurological disease had less satisfaction than with musculoskeletal disease. Patients in 20's were less satisfied in wayfinding than 60's. Satisfaction for interior design was lower in subject in 50's than 70's. These findings can be used as evidences to improve spacial environment design for rehabilitative facilities to the better patient satisfaction.

  • Purpose: The accelerometer is a tool for evaluating walking by the displacement of the center of mass (COM) in the body. Recently, smartphones have added an accelerometer app, and it can be used to evaluate outcomemanures in rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the COM in the bodies of normal persons and stroke patients using this smartphone application while walking. Methods: Twenty normal persons and twenty-two stroke patients were recruited and had their COM measured using G-walk and the smartphone application, SMAP, during 10 m walking. Subjects repeated the 10 m of walking 3 times, and we used the SMAP, Accelerometer Monitor ver. 1.5.0, to evaluate COM during the walk. To measure the displacement of COM, we used the difference in value between the maximal angle and the minimum anterior-posterior (AP), mediolateral (ML), and rotational angles during the walk. Results: For the normal persons, there was significant correlation between the AP and AP of SMAP, and was also a significant correlation between rotational angle and the ML of SMAP. In the stroke patients, there was significant correlation between AP and ML, and the rotational angle of SMAP. Conclusion: Our research results suggest that if the SMAP system is reinforced in the case of patients who have a greater displacement of COM, it may be used as an evaluation tool during walking.

  • Background: This study aimed to investigate the effect of mobilization with movement (MWM) applied to the ankle joint, on the craniovertebral angle (CVA), pressure pain threshold, and neck disability index (NDI) in asymptomatic adults with a forward head posture (FHP). Methods: A total of 32 subjects with FHP were assigned to either the MWM group (N=16) or the cranio-cervical flexion exercise (CCFE) group (n=16). The CVA, pressure pain threshold and NDI were measured before and 4 weeks after the intervention. Results: A significant improvement in the CVA was observed in the MWM group (p<.05), whereas no significant changes (p>.05) were observed in the CCFE group. Both groups showed significant differences in the pressure pain threshold and NDI before and after the intervention (p<.05). Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that MWM applied to the ankle joint can effectively improve the CVA, pressure pain threshold, and NDI of adults with a forward head posture. Based on this study, the ankle MWM technique for dorsiflexion can be used as an objective research method for additional studies targeting FHP patients in the future.
