  • As the use of waste and biomass increases in a power generation boiler, high temperature corrosion (HTC) problems of boiler heat exchangers are becoming very important. Chlorine of the low-rank fuels is mainly responsible for the HTC issues, which typically occur in the surface of high temperature heat exchanger like a superheater or reheater. In order to mitigate the problem, various approaches have been proposed in terms of design modification, material improvement, fuel pre-treatment and additive utilization. In this study, the current state of research and development focused on the additive method was investigated.

A Study on the Steam Hammering Characteristics by Sudden Closure of Main Stop Valve in the Main Steam Piping System of a Power Plant (화력발전소 주증기배관에서 밸브 차단에 따른 수증기 충격 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The present study has been carried out to analyze the effect of steam hammering on the steam piping system including the final superheater, the high pressure turbine, check valve and the first reheater by sudden stoping of main stop valve in a power plant. For the present steam hammering analysis, the well known Flowmaster software has been used to model the steam piping system and the time dependent characteristics of pressure and steam mass flow rate has been conducted. Using the result of the unsteady pressure and steam mass flow rate, the forces acting on the elbows in the piping system has been derived. From the present analysis, it has been elucidated that the elbow just before the main stop valve and the elbow near the connection pipe between bypass pipe and check valve had the largest force among the elbows in the steam piping system. The structural safety diagnostics study on the elbow and the supporting structures of the steam piping system of a power plant will be conducted in the future by the present results of the forces acting on the elbow.

  • Cure shrinkage during cure process of polymer matrix composites develope residual stress that cause some structural deformation, such as spring-in, spring-out and warpage. The carbon/epoxy prepreg used in this study is Hexply M21EV/34%/UD268NFS/IMA-12K supplied by Hexcel corp. Cure shrinkage and degree of cure measured by TMA(thermomechanical analyzer) and DSC(differential scanning calorimetry). Cure shrinkages are measured by TMA within a temperature range of $140{\sim}240^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere, and degree of cure determined by the heat of reaction using dynamic and isothermal DSC runs in argon atmosphere. As a result, the cure shrinkage is increased dramatically in a degree of cure range between 27~80%. the higher the cure temperature, the lower the degree of cure occurring to begin cure shrinkage.

Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Short Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Composites (단섬유 강화 에폭시 복합재료의 열적/기계적 특성)

  • A cycloaliphatic epoxy/acidic anhydride system incorporating short carbon fibers (SCF) and short glass fibers (SGF) was fabricated and thermal/mechanical properties were characterized. At low filler content both SCF- and SGF-reinforced composites showed a similar decrease in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), measured by a thermomechanical analyzer, with increasing loadings, above which SCF became more effective than SGF at reducing the CTE. Experimental CTE data for the SCF-reinforced composites is best described by the rule of mixtures at lower SCF contents and by the Craft-Christensen model at higher SCF contents. Storage modulus (E') at $30^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$ was greatly enhanced for short fiber-filled composites compared to unfilled specimens, Scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surfaces indicated that the decreased CTE and the increased E' of the short fiber-reinforced composites resulted from good interfacial adhesion between the fibers and epoxy matrix.

High Temperature Fatigue Life Prediction for Welded Joints of Recuperator Material for UAV (무인기용 레큐퍼레이터 소재의 용접부에 대한 고온 피로수명 예측)

  • An experimental study on the welding part of a heat transfer plate that constitutes the lightweight and high efficiency recuperator is presented in this paper. In particular, to find out the service life of the welded part, fatigue characteristics were determined through experiments. Experiments were carried out on two materials (STS347, AL20-25 + nb), which are selected as the material of the recuperator; further, the specimens were manufactured through the methods used for actual fabrication and the standards recommended by ASTM. To evaluate the mechanical properties of the specimens at room and high temperature, MTS-810 was used in a high-temperature furnace. The tensile test was carried out at room and high temperatures for each specimen. The fatigue test was carried out by setting the load ratio corresponding to 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, and 10% of the tensile strength at the stress ratio of 0.1. Finally, the fatigue life characteristics obtained by the experiment were compared with the stresses owing to the load generated in the operating conditions of the recuperator, and the lifetime of the welds was evaluated to prepare for the operation time required by the UAV.

Modeling of Boiler Steam System in a Thermal Power Plant Based on Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN 알고리즘을 이용한 화력발전소 보일러 증기계통의 모델링에 관한 연구)

  • In thermal power plants, boiler models have been used widely in evaluating logic configurations, performing system tuning and applying control theory, etc. Furthermore, proper plant models are needed to design the accurate controllers. Sometimes, mathematical models can not exactly describe a power plant due to time varying, nonlinearity, uncertainties and complexity of the thermal power plants. In this case, a neural network can be a useful method to estimate such systems. In this paper, the models of boiler steam system in a thermal power plant are developed by using a generalized regression neural network(GRNN). The models of the superheater, reheater, attemperator and drum are designed by using GRNN and the models are trained and validate with the real data obtained in 540[MW] power plant. The validation results showed that proposed models agree with actual outputs of the drum boiler well.

An Analysis on the Temperature Safety of a Boiler Desuperheater (보일러 과열증기 냉각기의 온도 안전성에 관한 연구)

  • The present study has been carried out to diagnose the temperature safety of a boiler desuperheater which decreases abnormally higher temperature of superheated steam in a reheater of a power plant. The liquid water in the desuperheater stays in a closed space. It becomes heated by the high temperature superheated steam and boiling could occur. Boiling might increase internal pressure and it could destroy the desuperheater if the internal pressure exceeds the allowable pressure of the desuperheater. The present study modeled reasonably the desuperheater and four cases of heat transfer analysis are executed with the consideration of insulator and natural convective fluid flow of the inside cooling water. For the case excluded the natural convective fluid flow, the temperature exceeds the allowable temperature and pressure. On the other hand, for the real case included natural convective fluid flow and insulator, the active heat transfer from higher temperature region to lower temperature region occurs and it makes the temperature in the cooling water below the allowable temperature and pressure. From this fact, it could be thought that the desuperheater in the reheater is safe from destroy or back flow.

  • Entry into meiosis in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is regulated by two major factors: the cell type MATa/MAT${\alpha}$ and the nutriational state (starvation) of the cell. The two independent regulations act through IME1and IME2 expression to initiate meiosis. IME2 encodes a meiosis-specific protein kinase, and it enabled MATa/MAT${\alpha}$ diploid cells to undergo meiosis and sporulation. The PCR mutagenesis method was applied for the isolation of thermosensitive ime2 mutants. Among sixty two mutants isolated from the phenotype of defective spore formation under the restrictive temperature, three with the most easily observed temperature-sensitive phenotype (ts ${\cdot}$ime2-11, ts ${\cdot}$ime2-12 and ts ${\cdot}$ime2-13) were selected for further study. To understand the detailed functions of IME2, we examined the defects of these mutants in the early meiotic pathway including the premeiotic DNA replication and exhibited decreased level in meiotic recombination. These results suggest that the IME2 gene plays essential role in meiotic recombination pathway as well as premeiotic DNA replication. As the result of the IME2 overexpression in ${\Delta}$mre4. moreover, it was suggested that the IME2 and MRE4 genes act on the same pathway of initiation step in meiotic recombination.

Development of a New Commercial Grain Cooler (곡물냉각기의 개발)

  • The objectives of this study were to develop a new commercial grain cooler suited to domestic weather and post-harvesting conditions for paddy, and to evaluate the performance. A prototype grain cooler capable of cooling paddy of 200 tons within 24 hours was developed. The grain cooler was designed to control the refrigeration capacity from 0 to 100% by controlling the capacity of compressor with unloading solenoid valve and by changing the flow rates of hot refrigerant gas flowing into reheater and evaporator from compressor. And a controller with one chip microprocessor was developed to control temperature and relative humidity of cooling air. The maximum cooling capacity of the grain cooler was 35,284㎉/hr at condensing/evaporating pressure of 16.5/3.6 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Maximum flow rate of cooling air was 120 ㎥/min at static pressure of 279 mmAq. The total maximum required power was 22.8㎾, and total required energy was saved from 26.7 to 33.3% of maximum power depending on operating conditions. The coefficient of performance of refrigeration devices and total coefficient of performance of the grain cooler were 4.71 and 1.8, respectively.

  • A 8-year-old, castrated male Maltese with difficulty in opening his mouth was presented. Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) was diagnosed by 2M antibody test. After treatment of MMM with corticosteroids, range of jaw motion improved and was almost normal at 5 months. In dogs with MMM, early detection and aggressive immunosuppressive therapy are required to improve the prognosis.
