Study on characteristics of compression and transportation of syngas produced from gasification process of high-calorific waste and Sewage Sludge (고발열량폐기물 및 탈수슬러지 혼합가스화를 통해 생산된 합성가스 압축, 이송 운전 특성)

  • 폐기물의 감량화 및 자원화 기술 중 가장 대표적인 기술로 폐기물의 가스화 용융 기술을 들 수 있다. 폐기물 가스화 용융 기술은 폐기물 내의 탄소 및 수소 성분은 가스화 하여 CO, $H_2$가 주성분인 합성가스(synthesis gas, syngas)로 전환하고, 불연물은 용융하여 환경적으로 무해한 슬래그 또는 금속으로 회수하는 기술이다. 본 연구에서는 고발열량폐기물과 탈수슬러지 혼합가스화를 통하여 생산된 합성가스를 합성가스 압축기를 통하여 유용한 원료물질을 제조하는 공정인 수성가스 전환 반응(water gas shift reaction)과 가스화 반응기의 보조연료로 투입하기 위한 합성가스 압축, 이송 시스템의 운전 특성을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 고발열량폐기물과 탈수슬러지 혼합가스화에서 합성가스는 안정적으로 발생하였으며, 합성가스 압축, 이송시스템을 위한 정제설비에서의 분진제거는 99.07 %의 효율을 얻었고, 또한 합성가스 재순환 장치의 성능시험을 통하여 대기 중의 산소가 유입이 안 되는 기밀성을 확인하였다. 합성가스 압축, 이송 공급 유량 제어 실험 결과로는 합성가스 압축기 기동 시 합성가스 압축압력과 공급유량은 비례적으로 증감하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Fluid-flow Characteristics of Flue-gas-recirculation System in Sintering Plant (소결로 배기가스 재순환 시스템 내의 유체유동 특성 연구)

  • The fluid-flow characteristics of flue-gas-recirculation (FGR) system can have a significant effect on system efficiency of a sintering plant. The flow characteristics in the system were investigated. A sintering plant with FGR system was modeled. Numerical visualization was performed and flow characteristics were analyzed. Characteristics of the flow distribution of the branch ducts, the inflow of air into the recirculating hood, and the flow in the hood were discussed. Based on the results three suggestions were proposed: (1) distribution of branch duct flowrate upstream, (2) installation of external air ducts in the hood, and (3) installation of baffles at the hood corners. The suggestions were tested numerical and experimental visualization methods. The suggestions were effective and confirmed to be applicable to the actual sinter plant.

  • A kraft recovery boiler produces steam for power generation by the combustion of black liquor from the kraft pulping process. Since saturated steam became superheated in a superheater above the furnace, it is important to increase the heat exchange efficiency for the superheated steam production and power generation. A nose arch at the bottom of the superheater is important for blocking radiation from the furnace which causes corrosion of the superheater. But the nose arch is the main reason for creating a recirculation region and then decreasing the heat exchange efficiency by holding cold flue gas after the heat transfer to saturated steam. In this study, the size of recirculation region and the temperature of flue gas at the outlet were analyzed by the nose arch structure using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). As a result, when the nose arch angle changed from 106.5° (case 1) to 150° (case4), the recirculation region of flue gas decreased and the heat exchange efficiency between the flue gas and the steam increased by 10.3%.

Membrane Process Using Polysulfone Hollow Fiber Membranes for Vehicle Fuel Production from Bio-Methane Mixture (폴리설폰 중공사막 모듈을 이용한 자동차 연료용 고순도 바이오메탄 분리공정 연구)

  • In this study, 2-stage recirculation membrane process was developed for purification of high purity bio-methane for the vehicle fuel application. Pure gas permeation and mixture gas permeation test were done as a function of methane content and pressure in the feed using polysulfone membrane modules. 2-stage membrane plant was designed, constructed in a food waste treatment cite. Dehumidification, dry desulfurization, and desiloxane plants are installed for the removal of $H_2O$, $H_2S$ and siloxane in the biogas. Permeation test were done with the pre-treated methane mixture in terms of methane purity and recovery by adjusting the ratio of membrane area (1:1, 1:3, 2:2) in the first and second membrane modules in the plant. When membrane area of 2 stage increased to $3m^2$ from $1m^2$ at 1-stage membrane area of $1m^2$, the feed rate and $CH_4$ recovery at 95% methane purity were increased from 47.1% to 92.5% respectively. When the membrane area increased two-fold (1:1 to 2:2), $CH_4$ recovery increased from 47.1% to 88.3%. When the feed flow rate was increased, in 1:3 ratio, final purity of the methane is reduced, the methane recovery is increased. When operating pressure was increased, the feed rate was increased and recovery was slightly decreased. From this result, membrane area, feed pressure and feed rate could be the important factor to the performance of the membrane process.

  • The reductions in final waste form and material costs, which were induced from an introduction of salt waste regeneration system, have been estimated and compared with those of the present pyrochemical process, which is under development in KAERI. The results calculated on the basis of published data and proper assumption showed that the final waste form of LiCl waste from the Advanced Conditioning Process would be reduced about 3.7 to#ton HM (from 5.4 to 1.7 ton/ton HM). For the case of LiCl-KCl eutectic salt waste from the electro-refining process, the final waste form would be reduced 2.3 ton/ton U. Thus, these estimation suggested that the introduction of salt waste regeneration system was essential to improve the economical efficiency of the pyrochemical process.

Heat Integration and Economic Analysis of Dry Flue Gas Recirculation in a 500 MWe Oxy-coal Circulating Fluidized-bed (CFB) Power Plant with Ultra-supercritical Steam Cycle (순환 유동층 보일러와 초초임계 증기 사이클을 이용한 500 MWe급 순산소 화력발전소의 건식 재순환 흐름의 열 교환 및 경제성 분석)

  • This study presented techno-economic analysis of a 500 MWe oxy-coal power plant with CO2 capture. The power plant included a circulating fluidized-bed (CFB), ultra-supercritical steam turbine, flue gas conditioning (FGC), air separation unit (ASU), and CO2 processing unit (CPU). The dry flue gas recirculation (FGR) was used to control the combustion temperature of CFB. One FGR heat exchanger, one heat exchanger for N2 stream exiting ASU, and a heat recovery from CPU compressor were considered to enhance heat efficiency. The decrease in the temperature difference (ΔT) of the FGR heat exchanger that means the increase in heat recovery from flue gas enhanced the electricity and exergy efficiencies. The annual cost including the FGR heat exchanger and FGC cooling water was minimized at ΔT = 10 ℃, where the electricity efficiency, total capital cost, total production cost, and return on investment were 39%, 1371 M$, 90 M$, and 7%/y, respectively.

Innovative Technology of Landfill Stabilization Combining Leachate Recirculation with Shortcut Biological Nitrogen Removal Technology (침출수 재순환과 생물학적 단축질소제거공정을 병합한 매립지 조기안정화 기술 연구)

  • A leachate containing an elevated concentration of organic and inorganic compounds has the potential to contaminate adjacent soils and groundwater as well as downgradient areas of the watershed. Moreover high-strength ammonium concentrations in leachate can be toxic to aquatic ecological systems as well as consuming dissolved oxygen, due to ammonium oxidation, and thereby causing eutrophication of the watershed. In response to these concerns landfill stabilization and leachate treatment are required to reduce contaminant loading sand minimize effects on the environment. Compared with other treatment technologies, leachate recirculation technology is most effective for the pre-treatment of leachate and the acceleration of waste stabilization processes in a landfill. However, leachate recirculation that accelerates the decomposition of readily degradable organic matter might also be generating high-strength ammonium in the leachate. Since most landfill leachate having high concentrations of nitrogen also contain insufficient quantities of the organic carbon required for complete denitrification, we combined a shortcut biological nitrogen removal (SBNR) technology in order to solve the problem associated with the inability to denitrify the oxidized ammonium due to the lack of carbon sources. The accumulation of nitrite was successfully achieved at a 0.8 ratio of $NO_2^{-}-N/NO_x-N$ in an on-site reactor of the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) type that had operated for six hours in an aeration phase. The $NO_x$-N ratio in leachate produced following SBR treatment was reduced in the landfill and the denitrification mechanism is implied sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification and/or heterotrophic denitrification. The combined leachate recirculation with SBNR proved an effective technology for landfill stabilization and nitrogen removal in leachate.

Simulation of CH4/CO2 Separation Process Using 2-Stage Hollow Fiber Membrane Modules (메탄/이산화탄소 2단 중공사 분리막 분리공정 전산모사)

  • A numerical analysis was performed for a separation of carbon dioxide and methane using 2-staged, membrane process where two polysulfone hollow fiber membrane modules were connected to provide both the methane concentration richer than 95% and the recovery higher than 90% using the recycled flows. The Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6 software was utilized for the numerical simulation. Both the methane concentration and the recovery % of methane could be successfully predicted as the function of the operating conditions. As the feed pressure, the methane concentration, and the flow rate increase, the methane concentration in a product is also found to increase and the recovery of methane is found to decrease.

  • In the iron ore sinter process, temperature distribution pattern in sintering bed is related with productivity and quality of sintered ore. Evenly heat distribution make the uniform quality of sintered ore but in normal operating condition, upper part of bed has lack of heat and scarce quality of sintered ore, thus yeild rate is decreased and productivity is diminished. Therefore, using the additional fuel for increasing quality and flue gas recirculation for increasing productivity are considered and effect of both processes are discussed.

Optimal Design of Generalized Process-storage Network Applicable To Polymer Processes (고분자 공정에 적용할 수 있는 일반화된 공정-저장조 망구조 최적설계)

  • The periodic square wave (PSW) model was successfully applied to the optimal design of a batch-storage network. The network structure can cover any type of batch production, distribution and inventory system, including recycle streams. Here we extend the coverage of the PSW model to multitasking semi-continuous processes as well as pure continuous and batch processes. In previous solutions obtained using the PSW model, the feedstock composition and product yield were treated as known constants. This constraint is relaxed in the present work, which treats the feedstock composition and product yield as free variables to be optimized. This modification makes it possible to deal with the pooling problem commonly encountered in oil refinery processes. Despite the greater complexity that arises when the feedstock composition and product yield are free variables, the PSW model still gives analytic lot sizing equations. The ability of the proposed method to determine the optimal plant design is demonstrated through the example of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant. Based on the analytical optimality results, we propose a practical process optimality measure that can be used for any kind of process. This measure facilitates direct comparison of the performance of multiple processes, and hence is a useful tool for diagnosing the status of process systems. The result that the cost of a process is proportional to the square root of average flow rate is similar to the well-known six-tenths factor rule in plant design.
