  • The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of fluoride release and remineralizing effect of compomer with those of glass ionomer cement and composite resin. Composite resin($Z-100^{(R)}$) was used for negative control group(Group I), glass ionomer(Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$) for positive control group(Group IV), compomer(Dyract $AP^{(R)}$ and $F-2000^{(R)}$) for experimental group(Group II and Group III). The results obtained can be summarized as follows : 1. Glass ionomer showed the higher amount of fluoride release than compomer groups. Composite resin showed no fluoride release during test period. 2. Significant evidence of remineralization could be noticed in samples of all groups. The highest degree of remineralization was observed in glass ionomer group followed by compomer group. The least evidence of remineralization was observed in composite resin group. 3. Microhardness values of carious site was lower than control site, but Microhardness values of caries site at form away from filling materials in group II, III, IV was significantly higher than the other area. Based on the above results, compomer could be considered as one of the very attractive restorative materials in the field of pediatric dentistry.

  • Remineralization of acid-etched enamel across the time has been one of the curiosities in the context of the orthodontic biomechanics(Arends J. et al., IRL Press, 1, 1985), nevertheless, is so far controversial. It was the aim of this study to observe the remineralization patterns of acid-etched enamel across the time and whether the existence of fluoride might carry out any modifications. The intact buccal surfaces of the first bicuspids which was extracted for orthodontic treatment were ground smooth, and etched with a 38w/w% phosphoric acid for 60 seconds, The surface was observed by the scanning electron microscope and surface microhardness was measured after immersion in the fluoride or non-fluoride containing remineralizing solution for 0 hour, 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 28 days, and 42 days. The following results and conclusions were drawn; 1. Surface microhardness increased in both fluoride containing and non-fluoride containing solution group with time lapse. 2. In fluoride containing solution group, the surface microhardness sharply increased at the 12 hours group, on the other hand, surface microhardness increased at 3 days in non-fluoride containing solution group. 3. The difference in microhardness value between two groups manifested gradual decrease. 4. Scanning electron microphotographs disclosed that the fluoride containing solution group generated spiculate sub-stances in the 12 hours group, which was increased in number and size with time lapse. 7 days later, spherical composure was began to be produced, The spiculate substances so much increased in number that the etched enamel surface looked like flat in 42 days. 5. In non fluoride-containing solution group, there was no surface change at 42 days, perceivable in scanning electron microphotographs which could be defined as remineralization though the surface was a little rougher than the incipient etched surface. These results demonstrate that the action of the fluoride is exceedingly pertinent in the remineralization of acid-etched enamel and the remineralization process goes uninterruptedly with time lapse.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of multi or single application of fluoride plus 0.05% NaF solution on the remineralization of dental caries lesion. The microhardness changes of enamel surface were measured after application of fluoride and precipitation of 0.05% NaF solution on 6 groups of cow's tooth on which the artificial carious lesions were formed first. Test groups were calssified into two step application with NaF, $SnF_2$ and APF under different application time conditions plus 0.05% NaF solution(group I, II, III, IV) and single application with APF plus 0.05% NaF solution (group V) and control(0.05% NaF solution only, group IV). The obtained results were as follows. 1. Regarding microhardness change of enamel surface. microhardness increments in group I(NaF for 1 minute+APF for 3 minutes+0.05% NaF solution for 1 minute), II($SnF_2$ 1 min+APF 3 min+NaF sol.), III($SnF_2$ 2 min+APF 2 min+NaF sol.), IV(NaF 2 min+APF 2 min+NaF sol.) and V(APF 4 min+NaF sol.) were significantly greater than group VI.(P<0.05) 2. Microhardness changes of shorter application time of $SnF_2$ (group II) were significantly greater than group III. (P<0.05) 3. Microhardness changes were variable with kinds of fluoride, application sequence and application time of fluoride. but had no relation with the number of fluoride application.

  • The objective of this in vitro study was to monitor the amount of remineralization of decalcified enamel according to the number of fluoride varnish application using quantitative light-induced fluorescence-D and polarizing microscope. Artificial white lesion induced on the sound 72 teeth, $CavityShield^{TM}$ (Group I), $FluroDose^{TM}$ (Group II) and $Flor-Opal^{(R)}$ Varnish (Group III) were applied 1, 2 or 3 times every two weeks. The following results was obtained: 1. In group I, II and III, ${\Delta}L$ were increased. From regression analysis of ${\Delta}L$ by the number of application, the equation was y = 3.878x + 90.612 in group I, y = 3.133x + 37.168 in group II, and y = 3.509x + 82.322 in group III(p < 0.05). 2. In group I, II and III, ${\Delta}D$ were decreased. From regression analysis of ${\Delta}D$ by the number of application, the equation was y = -2.336x + 107.235 in group I, y = -2.158x + 101.620 in group II, and y = -1.940x + 94.806 in group III(p < 0.05). 3. The Pearson correlation value between the ${\Delta}L$ and ${\Delta}D$ was -0.673 in group I, -0.574 in group II, and -0.431 in group III(p < 0.05).

  • In order to investigate the effects of continuous and pH cyclic remineralization, artificial enamel carious lesions were produced on sections of about 2mm thickness of bovine incisor. 0.1M lactic acid solution adjusted to a pH of 4.3 and saturity of $2.98{\times}10^{-8}$ was used as demineralizing solution. The lesions were remineralized with the solution of pH 7.0 containing 1.5mM $CaCl_2$, 0.9 mM $KH_2PO_4$ and 20mM Hepes. In continuous remineralization procedure, the specimens were immersed in remineralizing solution continuously for 72 hours. In pH cyclic remineralization procedure, the sections were immersed in remineralizing solution for 6 hours and in dermineralizing solution for 20 minutes alternately during 72 hours. The effect of remineralization was determined by polarizing microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. The obtained results were as follows. 1. In case of continuous remineralization, the lesion depth was reduced partially or unchanged. 2. In pH cyclic condition, the thichness of surface layer and the lesion depth were increased simultaneously. 3. The mineral content of lesion was recovered to the level of sound enamel by remineraiization.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the remineralization effects of fluoride-containing sealant on the artificially created enamel carious lesions. The fluoride release from the specimen of fluoride-containing sealants, the effect on enamel acid solubility and micro-hardness from the experimental sealants when applied to carious enamel surfaces were investigated. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Fluoride was a rapid rate of release during the first day, with the amount diminishing with time. The amount of fluoride released from Fuji Ionomer type III was higher than that from Teethmate-F and Helioseal-F during the 28 days of immersion(P<0.05). 2. The enamel solubility of carious enamel surface was higher than that in the Teethmate-F, Helioseal-F, and Fuji Ionomer type III (P<0.05), and there was no significant difference with Teethmate-A and Helioseal(P>0.05). 3. The microhardness value of carious enamel surface was lowest. However, there was no significant difference between the other sealants with respect to their effects on enamel hardness(P>0.05).

  • Objectives : This paper is designed to help the public prevent their future dental caries, based on the studies of xylitol about it's efficacy and effectiveness, and its appropriate usage. Methods : This study of xylitol on the basis of existing research papers and literature is not only to learn about the mechanism of what xylitol acts, but also to search the effectiveness of incompleteness of xylitol-containing foods, bacterial infection between xylitol and mother-baby, and the side-effects of xylitol. Results : 1. Xylitol's continuous intake of teeth effects the decrease of calculus amount, cleanness of teeth, as well as the remineralization process. The xylitol effect varies depending on the weight of xylitol, which has no effect on root caries. 2. Mouth gargle solution is higher resistant against acids; recalcification is significantly reduced; and remineralization effect represents. 3. It is reported that regular consumption of xylitol by mothers just during two years after birth has significantly decreased the spread possibility of mutans streptococcei. 4. The reduction of dental caries by xylitol is happened by its restraining the growth of bacteria resource caries, with their presence in amount of uncontrolled growth. 5. When a small amount of eating xylitol is absorbed slowly into gastrointestinal tract, being followed by glucose metabolism in the liver, while its excessive amount of eating can cause gastrointestinal problems. Conclusion : Dental hygienists should be required to provide dental information to the public on the basis of academic knowledge. In situation that one is not yet sure of xylitol on solid and multifaceted researches, there must be needed more accurate and detailed reviews on the side-effects of xylitol and the overall impact on the oral environments.

  • In order to examine the anticariogenic effect after fluoride varnish was applied to sound enamel and artificial caries enamel, anterior teeth of healthy cattle were used and divided into four groups such as group 1 (sound enamel), group 2 (application of fluoride varnish to sound enamel), group 3 (artificial caries enamel) and group 4 (application of fluoride varnish to artificial caries enamel). Remineralization on the surface of enamel and changes of crystalline structure after demineralization were observed by using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Quantitative analysis of Ca and P was measured by using the energy dispersive X-ray spectrophotometer (EDS). The following conclusions were obtained: 1)Surface pattern of enamel was the roughest in group 3 due to the defects caused by porosity and microcracks. Group 4, group 1 and group 2 were followed in order; 2) It was found that pattern of crystalline structures in a group of application of fluoride varnish and a group of no application showed bigger change in artificial caries enamel than that in sound enamel. In other words, groups 4 and 1 showed a similar pattern; 3) The contents of Ca and P were higher in groups of application of fluoride varnish (group 2 and group 4) than in groups of no application of fluoride varnish (group 1 and group 3). Taken results of this study together, in the case of application of fluoride varnish, crystalline structure was changed by remineralization even in the sound enamel. In particular, porous structures showed a smooth and uniform pattern due to the recalcification in the artificial caries enamel. In addition, according to results of EDS analysis, the contents of Ca and P were increased and it had great anticariogenic effects which inhibit decalcification of sound enamel and artificial caries enamel.
