  • This paper is one of the studies for developing new methodologies for improving performance of hot-mix recycled asphalt mixtures. The objective of this study is to evaluate rut-resistance characteristics of recycled asphalt mixture which was prepared by newly developed mixing method. The new mixing method provided more sufficient rejuvenation of old binder of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), making homogeneous binder viscosity level in a recycled mixture. Two aggregates (gneiss and granite), two RAP contents (15% and 30%) and two contents (none and 6%) of polymer modifier (LDPE) were used. Recycled mixture was prepared with two methods; method A and method F. To examine difference of binder oxidation level by type of material within a recycled mixture, Gel-permeation chromatography(GPC) analysis was performed on the binders mixed with coarse aggregates and matrix separately. Laboratory tests were performed for evaluation of rut resistance characteristics of each recycled mixture and these includes wheel tracking (WT) test and Kim test. Rut depth and dynamic stability were obtained from WT test and deformation strength $(S_D)$ was obtained from Kim test. The results of regression analysis was shown that correlation $(R^2)$ of F mixing mixtures was higher than one of A mixing mixtures. Therefore, F mixing mixtures showed more consistent rut resistance than h mixing mixtures.

  • Bond shear strengths of recycled asphalt concrete were evaluated under different tack coat applications. Regardless of the new and old mixtures, the bond shear strengths at $30^{\circ}C$ were increased by 10-20% than those at 1$0^{\circ}C$. The bond shear strengths of recycled asphalt concrete without tack coat showed very low ones. These are the main reasons for the frequent longitudinal interface crack in the field. The effect of tack coat curing time on bond shear strengths was inferior to the tack coat construction temperature.

  • Basalt powder sludge (abbreviated BPS) is an inevitable industry by product resulted from the stone processing. Recently, demands for natural materials have been increasing in the construction and landscaping fields, therefore, amounts of BPS have been also increasing. Since most of BPS are used as landfill and earth soil, it is necessary to figure out to expedite their utilization. In this study, by considering the characteristics of precipitation of Jeju, effectiveness of BPS as a filler for asphalt compounds mixed with cement were analyzed. As a result, BPS satisfies quality criterion required in KS F 3501. Marshall mixing designs were performed to determine the optimal asphalt content for the Modified recycling asphalt mixture (27% recycling aggregate) and the Normal asphalt mixture. Effectiveness of BPS were identified by the Marshall Stability Test with the mixing ratio (level 3) of two asphalt compounds and composition ration (level 3) of BPS and cement. Performance of asphalt compounds shown appropriate effect of mixing and composition ratios of the filler were assessed. Test results show that two types of asphalt compounds satisfy the quality standards of the MLIT (2015). Therefore, BPS could be used as filler for asphalt compounds.

  • Recently, the quantities of waste asphalt concrete at construction sites have much increased greatly. but maintaining a filling-up and final disposal place is a difficult problem. Therefore, we are faced with a worsening environmental problem brought about present illegal measures. So, safety treatment and recycling of construction waste is a very important question in the Preservation of environmental and natural resources In this study we performed fundamental investigation to manufacture the base recycling asphalt mixture by movable asphalt recycling machine. It contained waste asphalt concrete and recycling agent and its quality was equal to virgin asphalt concrete.

  • The new asphalt surface reinforcement method (ASRM) is one of the preventive maintenance methods in asphalt concrete pavements. The adhesion performance of new ASRM satisfied the standard of non-slip pavement and bridge waterproofing materials. As a results of durability tests (as wheel load, rolling bottle and UV resistance test), the new ASRM showed sufficient resistance to traffic and environmental loads. The waterproof and chemical resistance tests of new ASRM were conducted to evaluate whether the pavement could be protected from water and chemicals and the performances of new ASRM were satisfactory. Furthermore, the new ASRM demonstrated some rejuvenation effects due to its toughness increases in recycled asphalt concrete mixture by 5% compared to the conventional hot mix asphalt mixture using reclaimed asphalt pavement. In conclusion, the new ASRM was evaluated to protect the asphalt concrete pavement and increase the lifetime.

  • This study evaluated the asphalt binder characteristics for the hot-recycled asphalt mixture in which RAP was added in ambient temperature for surface course as well as for base course. RAPs were collected from four sources and their physical properties were evaluated. Mix designs were performed using 10 and 20% RAP contents for surface courses and 10, 20 and 30% for base courses. A virgin asphalt with the penetration grade of 60-80 was used for mixing recycled mixtures. Physical properties of recycled binders, including penetration, absolute viscosity, GPC, BBR and penetration after TFO were measured. From the results, regression analysis of absolute viscosity versus LMS in GPC showed $R^2$ being over 0.95, showing that GPC results estimate the absolute viscosity with relative accuracy. In BBR test, the resistance of recycled mixtures at low service temperature was inferior to the control, because the low temperature PG of recycled binder was one grade higher than that of the control binder.
