Survival Prediction of Rats with Hemorrhagic Shocks Using Support Vector Machine (지원벡터기계를 이용한 출혈을 일으킨 흰쥐에서의 생존 예측)

  • Hemorrhagic shock is a common cause of death in emergency rooms. Early diagnosis of hemorrhagic shock makes it possible for physicians to treat patients successfully. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to select an optimal survival prediction model using physiological parameters for the two analyzed periods: two and five minutes before and after the bleeding end. We obtained heart rates, mean arterial pressures, respiration rates and temperatures from 45 rats. These physiological parameters were used for the training and testing data sets of survival prediction models using an artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM). We applied a 5-fold cross validation method to avoid over-fitting and to select the optimal survival prediction model. In conclusion, SVM model showed slightly better accuracy than ANN model for survival prediction during the entire analysis period.

  • The heavy use of petroleum products in modern livings has brought ubiquitous environmental contaminants of aromatic compounds, which persist in aquatic and geo-environment without the substantial degradation. The persistence and accumulation of the aromatic compounds, which include xylene, phenol, toluene, phthalate, and so on are known to cause serious problems in our environments. Some of soil and aquatic microorganisms facilitate their growth by degrading aromatic compounds and utilizing degrading products as growth substrates, the biodegradation helps the reentry of carbons of aromatic compounds, preventing their accumulation in our environments. The metabolic studies on the degradation of aromatic compounds by microoganlsms were extensively carried out along with their genetic studies. A Rhodococcus sp. isolated in activated sludges has shown the excellent ability to grow on phenol as a sole carbon source. In the present study investigated a gene encoding phenol-degrading enzymes from a Rhodococcus sp.

  • A species of facultative photo-organotrophic, purple, non-sulfur bacterium was isolated from the 47 point at west and south coast of Korea in September 2001. Separated 13 samples of changes with red color under 28-32$^{\circ}C$, 3000 lux, anaerobe conditions for 7 days cultivated in basal medium. For pure isolation from 13 samples, we used agar-shake tube method (0.4 % agar) and separated 5 strains through 13-repetition test. EGH-24 and EGH-30 was identified as the same strain through the RAPD(Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA)-PCR of strain EGH-9, EGH-13, EGH-23, EGH-24, EGH-30. Four isolates cultivated in synthesis wastewater for wastewater biodegradation test. EGH-24 was selected with efficient wastwater treating strain. Based on the results obtained from morphology, nutrient requirements, major bacteriochlorophyll content, 16S-rDNA phylogenetic analysis, EGH-24 strain may be identified as a new strain of the genus Rhodobacter and named Rhodobacter sp. EGH-24.

  • Laminar natural convection heat transfer from an isothermal rectangular beam attached to horizontal and vertical adiabatic plates has been studied for various aspect ratios of the beam and Grashof numbers. The local Nusselt number was increased with decreasing H/B for the constant beam width, B, and with increasing H/B for the constant beam height, H. The total mean Nusselt number of the vertical type was higher than that of horizontal type in the range of H/B.leq.0.52, but reversed in the H/B>0.52 at constant beam width. The total mean Nusselt number of the horizontal type was generally higher than that of vertical type at constant beam height. The total mean Nusselt number of the vertical type was higher than that of horizontal type in the range of H/B.leq.0.43 at constant wetted perimeter, but reversed in the H/B$\leq$0.43.

  • This study examined the effects of exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by mobile phone on human cognitive function. Total volunteers were twenty and volunteers were separated in two groups. One is teenager group, and the other is adult group. Test was performed in the counterbalanced order(sham-real, real-sham). Subject remained blind to mobile phone status during the exam. The result showed that the exposure to the electromagnetic field significantly speeded up response time fur teenager group. This results suggest that exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by cellular phones may have a mild facilitating effect on cognitive function in teenager group.

  • Hemangiopericytoma is a rare tumor of blood vessels, first described and named by Stout and Murray in 1942, arising from the contractile, elongated cells which surround capillaries originated from the pericytes of Zimmermann. It can develop anywhere there are capillaries and mostly in the connective tissue of the human body. It can also develop at any age from 12 to 90 years old, and the rate of metastasis and prognosis vary with its histologic finding, We report three cases of hemangiopericytoma - one recurred in the right forearm where a tumor was excised 15 years ago, another occurred in the left pubis which metastasized to lung and head, the other metastasized from the lung to the right scapular area - treated at the department of orthopaedic surgery, Hanyang University Hospital from 1989 to 1995.

Long Term Operation of Microfiltration as a Pretreatment for Seawater Reverse Osmosis Processes (정밀여과를 이용한 역삼투법 해수담수화 전처리 공정의 장기운전 특성)

  • A pilot test was carried out to investigate the long term operation characteristics of Microfiltration (MF) system as a pretreatment for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) processes for two years. A commercialized MF module with pressurized operation type was used to filter seawater to remove particles which can foul reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Silt Density Index (SDI) values of filtered seawater by the MF system were ranged from 0.14 to 1.79, which meet the SDI standard for RO feed water as depicted in previous literatures. Although the tested seawater is quite clean (i.e., dissolved organic cabon (DOC) concentration and turbidity were about 1 mg/l and less than 1 NTU, respectively) enough not to foul the MF membrane, steep increase in trans-membrane pressure (TMP) with a constant flux were observed over a whole operation period. A set of operation and water analysis data implies that the steep increase in TMP was resulted from iron and maganese fouling by the combination of metal corrosion by seawater and oxidation state by aeration and residual chlorine.

  • Molecular characteristics and rheological properties of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) and nitrocellulose (GC-519) which are being widely used as propellants were investigated. Their weight-average molecular weight (Mw) and number-average molecular weight (Mn) were estimated via Gel Permeartion Chromatograpy (GPC). Cellulose derivatices were mixed with di-n-propyl adipate (DNPA) which acted as plasticizer in acetone, and then rheological properties of the mixture of cellulose derivatives and this plasticizer in acetone were investigated at $0^{\circ}C$ by rheometer.

  • Steady laminar natural convection heat transfer from a square beam with a horizontal adiabatic plate has been studied numerically for various Grashof numbers and beam shapes. The heat transfer from a square beam increases as the dimensionless beam width W / L decreases. The mean Nusselt number of the upper surface is minimum at W / L = 1.0, maximum at W / L = 0.25 and that of the side surface is minimum at W / L = 0.25, maximum at W / L = 1.0. The increases of the total mean Nusselt number with increasing Grashof number is dominated by the beam width.
