  • The capsizing and consequent sinking of a coastal car ferry was recently reported, with numerous human casualties. The primary cause was determined to be a sudden turn with improperly stowed and secured cargo. Part I of this study introduces how long term acceleration components are determined from seakeeping analyses. A carferry with a displacement of 1,633 tonf was selected as the target vessel. Sea data that included the significant wave heights and periods were collected at four observation buoys, some of which were far away from two main voyage routes: Incheon-Jeju and Pusan-Jeju. Frequency response analyses were performed to obtain the linearized radiation force coefficients, hydrostatic stiffnesses, and wave excitation forces. Time response analyses were sequentially performed to produce the motion-induced acceleration processes. The probabilistic distributions of the acceleration components were determined using a peak and valley counting method. Long term extreme acceleration components were proposed as a final result.

  • Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) generate electricity by electrochemical reactions of hydrogen and oxygen. PEMFCs are expected to alternate electric power generator using fossil fuels with various advantages of high power density, low operating temperature, and environmental-friendly products. PEMFCs have widely been used in a number of applications such as fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and stationary fuel cell systems. However, there are remaining technical issues, particularly the long-term durability of each part of fuel cells. Degradation of a carbon supported-platinum catalyst in the anode and cathode follows various mechanistic origins in different fuel cell operating conditions, and thus accelerated stress test (AST) is suggested to evaluate the durability of electrocatalyst. In this article, comparable protocols of the AST durability test are intensively explained.

  • Long-term stability of two type geogrids were evaluated. Membrane drawn type geogrid showed the exponential type tensile property and textile type geogrid showed the rapid increase of tensile property closer toward the break point. Accelerated creep test was done for textile type geogrid but not done for membrane drawn type geogrid because of its thermal property. Creep strain for membrane drawn type geogrid was larger than the ultimate tensile strain by tensile test and reduction factor by creep deformation of textile type geogrid was smaller than that of membrane type geogrid.

  • Long-term stability of two type geogrids were evaluated. Membrane drawn type geogrid showed the exponential type tensile property and textile type geogrid showed the rapid increase of tensile property closer toward the break point. Short term accelerated creep test was done for textile type geogrid but done for membrane drawn type geogrid at ambient temperature because of its thermal property. Creep strain for membrane drawn type geogrid was larger than the ultimate tensile strain by tensile test. Reduction factor by creep deformation of textile type geogrid was smaller than that of membrane type geogrid. From this result, it was seen that the textile type geogrid is more stable than membrane type geogrid by creep deformation.

  • The purpose of this study was to study the probability of cancer occurrence due to photoneutron dose exposure of the colon and thyroid gland, which are normal organs, in 3D CRT, IMRT 5 portals, and IMRT 9 portals, which are radiotherapy methods for prostate cancer. The total prescribed dose for prostate cancer was 6600 cGy, 220 cGy per dose, and 30 divided irradiations were applied for the total number of times. After setting up the Rando phantom on the treatment table (couch) of the medical linear accelerator used in the experiment, an optically stimulated luminescence albedo neutron dosimeter was placed on the corresponding area of the large intestine and thyroid gland of the phantom for measurement. During 3D CRT of prostate cancer, the probability of secondary cancer due to photoneutron dose to the colon and thyroid gland, which are normal organs, was 1.8 per 10,000 people. And IMRT 5 portals were 8.7 per 10,000 people, which was about 5 times larger than 3D CRT. IMRT 9 portals derived the result that there is a probability that 1.2 people per 1,000 people will develop cancer. Based on this study, the risk of secondary radiation exposure due to the dose of photoneutrons generated during radiation therapy is studied, and it is thought that it will be used as useful data for radiation protection in relation to the stochastic effect of radiation in the future.

  • In this study, we aimed to analyze the probability of secondary cancer occurring in the abdomen, a normal organ, due to photoneutron exposure during intensity-modulated radiotherapy for prostate cancer. The design of the radiation treatment plan for prostate cancer was established as a daily prescription dose of 220 cGy, a total of 35 treatments, and 7700 cGy. The experimental equipment was a True Beam STx (Varian, USA) linear accelerator from Varian. The energy used in the experiment was 15 MV, and the treatment plan was designed so that the photoneutron dose would be generated within the planning target volume (PTV). The radiation treatment plan was an Eclipse System (Varian Ver. 10.0, USA), and the number of irradiation portals was set to 5 to 9. The irradiation angle was designed so that 95% of the prescription dose area was set to 0 to 320°, and the number of beamlets per irradiation portal was set to 100. The optically stimulated luminescence dosimeter used in this study to measure the dose of photoneutrons was designed to measure photoneutron doses by coating 6LiCO3 on a device containing aluminum oxide components. It was studied that there is a minimum of 7.07 to 11 cases per 1,000 people with secondary cancer due to the photoneutron dose to the abdomen during intensity-modulated radiotherapy. In this study, we studied the risk of secondary radiation dose that may occur during intensity-modulated radiotherapy, and we expect that this will be used as meaningful data related to the probabilistic effects of radiation in the future.

  • Regional unconformities have been used as boundaries of major stratigraphic units in Korea. The term "synthem" has already been propsed for formal unconformity-bounded stratigraphic units of maximum magnitude (ISSC, 1974). The unconformity-based classification of the strata in the cratonic area in Korea comprises in ascending order the Kyerim, $Sangw{\check{o}}n$, $Jos{\check{o}}n$, $Py{\check{o}}ngan$, Daedong, and $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ Synthems, and the Cenozoic Erathem. The unconformites separating them from each other are either orogenic or epeirogenic (and vertical tectonic). The sub-$Sangw{\check{o}}n$ unconformity is a non-conformity above the basement complex in Korea. The unconformities between the $Sangw{\check{o}}n$, $Jos{\check{o}}n$, and $Py{\check{o}}ngan$ Synthems are disconformities denoting late Precambrian and Paleozoic crustal quiescence in Korea. The unconformities between the $Py{\check{o}}ngan$, Daedong, and $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ Synthems are angular unconformities representing Mesozoic orogenies. The bounding unconformities of the $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ Synthem involve non-conformable parts overlying the Jurassic and late Cretaceous granitic rocks.
