In order to understand response of geo-structures to the freezing-thawing process in the ground, it is necessary to consider phase change of the pore water of the ground and also to understand soil interaction with structures. In this study, numerical analysis was carried out for freezing and thawing effect on the modular road system. Neumann's theoretical equation for freezing-thawing processes in porous media can be used to estimate frozen depth and heaving from basic soil properties and ground and surface temperature, but its application is limited to the case for the sediment with fully saturated condition and zero unfrozen water content. Numerical analysis of the modular road system was performed on various soil types and different ground water table as the varying freezing index. The amount of heaving in the silty soil was much larger than those in granite weathered soil or sandy soil, and lowering groundwater level reduced ground heaving induced by freezing. Numerical analysis for temperature history of the ground surface predicted residual heaving near the surface by the freeze-thaw process in silty soil. It ought to reduce stiffness and bearing capacity of the ground so that it will impair stability and serviceability of new road system. However, the amount of residual heaving was insignificant for the road system installed in weathered soil granite and sandy soil. Since modular road system is a pavement structure mounted on the supporting substructure unlike the prevalent road pavement system, strict criteria should be applied for uniform and differential settlement of the pavement system.
Soil-water characteristic curve, which is called soil retention curve, is required to explore water flows in unsaturated soils, relative permeability of water in multi-phase fluids flow, and change to stiffness and volume of soils. Thus, the understanding of soil-water characteristic curves of soils help us explore the behavior of soils inclduing fluids. Biopolymers are environmental-friendly materials, which can be completely degraded by microbes and have been believed not to affect the nature. Thus, various biopolymers such as deacetylated power, polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, alginic acid sodium salt, and polyacrylic acid have been studies for the application to soil remediation, soil improvement, and enhanced oil recovery. PAA (polyacrylic acid) is one of biopolymers, which have shown a great effect in enhanced oil recovery as well as soil remediation because of the improvement of water-flood performance by mobility control. The study on soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing PAA (polyacrylic acid) has been conducted through experimentations and theoretical models. The results show that both capillary entry pressure and residual water saturation dramatically increase according to the increased concentration of PAA (polyacrylic acid). Also, soil-water characteristic curves by theoretical models are quite well consistent with the results by experimental studies. Thus, soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing biopolymers such as PAA (polyacrylic acid) can be estimated using fitting parameters for the theoretical model.

A Bi$_{4}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ (BIT) thin film is prepared by sol-gel method using acetate precursors and evaluated whether it could be applied to NVFRAM (Non-Volatile Ferroelectric RAM). The drying and the annealing temperature are 40$0^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$, respectively and they are determined from the DT-TG (Differential Thermal-Thermal Gravimetric) analysis. The BIT thin film deposited on Pt/Ta/SiO$_{2}$/Si substrate shows orthorhombic perovskite phase. The grain size and the surface roughness are about 100 nm and 70.2$\AA$, respectively. The dielectric constant and the loss tangent at 10 KHz are 176 and 0.038, respectively, and the leakage current density at 100 ㎸/cm is 4.71 $mutextrm{A}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$. In the results of hysteresis loops measured at $\pm$250 ㎸/cm, the remanent polarization (Pt) and the coercive field (Ec) are 5.92 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 86.3 ㎸/cm, respectively. After applying 10$^{9}$ square pulses of $\pm$5V, the remanent polarization of the BIT thin film decreases as much as about 33% from 5.92 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of initial state to 3.95 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

The effects of Zr/Ti concentration ratio in PLZT (10/y/z) thin films prepared by sol-gel method are investigated for the NVFRAM application. As Ti amount of Zr/Ti concentration ratio increases, the dielectric constants at 10 kHz decrease from 550 to 400, while the loss tangents increase from 0.028 to 0.053 and the leakage current densities at 170 kV/cm decrease from $1.64\times10^{-6}$ to $1.26\times10^{-7}\;A/cm^2$. In the results of hysteresis loops measured at $\pm170kV/cm$, the remanent polarization and the coercive field increase from 6.62 to $12.86{\mu}C/cm^2$ and from 32.15 to 56.45 kV/cm, respectively, according to the change from 40/60 to 0/100 in Zr/Ti concentration ratio. Fatigue and retention properties also improve much as the Zr/Ti concentration ratio change from 40/60 to 0/100. After applying $10^9$ square pulses with $\pm5V$, the remanent polarization of the PLZT (10/40/60) thin film decreases $50\%$ from the initial state while that of the PLZT (10/0/100) thin film decreases $28\%$. In the results of retention measurements of 10s s, the remanent polarization of the PLZT (10/0/100) thin film dec.eases only $10\%$ from the initial state, while that of the PLZT (10/40/60) thin film decreases $40\%$.
It is well know that the structure of shape memory alloy (SMA) can change from martensite austenite by either temperature or stress. Due to their inherent shape recovery properties, SMA fiber can be used such as for stress or cure-monitoring sensor or actuator, during applied stress or temperature. Incomplete superelasticity was observed as the stress hysteresis at stress-strain curve under cyclic loading test and temperature change. Superelasticity behavior was observed for the single-SMA fiber/epoxy composites under cyclic mechanical loading at stress-strain curve. SMA fiber or epoxy embedded SMA fiber composite exhibited the decreased interfacial properties due to the cyclic loading and thus reduced shape memory performance. Rigid epoxy and the changed interfacial adhesion between SMA fiber and epoxy by the surface treatment on SMA fiber exhibited similar incomplete superelastic trend. Epoxy embedded single SMA fiber exhibited the incomplete recovery during cure process by remaining residual heat and thus occurring residual stress in single SMA fiber/epoxy composite.

Hygrothermal aging of the laminates of $Avimid^{R}$ K3B/IM7 in $80^{\circ}C$ water was studied as a function of immersion time prior to forming microcracks. The factors causing the $80^{\circ}C$ water to degradation of the laminates could be the degradation of the matrix toughness, change in residual stresses or interfacial damage between the fiber and matrix. The times to saturation in $80^{\circ}C$ water for the laminates and the neat resin are 100 hours and 500 hours. After 500 hours aging of the neat resin in $80^{\circ}C$ water, the glass transition temperature was changed less than $1\%$ by DSC test and the weight gain was $1.55\%$ increase. After 500 hours aging, the fracture toughness of the neat resin was decreased about $37\%$ by 3-point bending test. After 100 hours aging of the [+45/0/-45/90]s K3B/IM7 laminates in $80^{\circ}C$ water, the weight gain was $0.41\%$ increase. The $80^{\circ}C$ water diffusion rate into the neat resin was faster than into the laminates. In 100 hours, the loss of the microcracking toughness of the laminates was $28\%$ of the original toughness by our own microcracking fracture toughness criterion.

The ordinary concentrically braced frame has an advantage of having simple design procedure. For this reason, it has been widely used for the small-sized frame structures subject to moderate or lower magnitude earthquake, even though its seismic performance against the earthquake load is not much effective compared to that of other frame systems. To enhance seismic performance of the ordinary concentrically braced frame where the bracing has a weakness for compressive behavior under lateral earthquake, seismic retrofitting by viscous damper has been commonly introduced. However, the viscous damper, itself, generally does not have stiffness for restoring the structure to the original position. This may cause residual displacement to the structure. In this paper, a self-centering viscous damper system in which upper and lower beams having flexural rigidity play a role as a nonlinear-elastic spring, restoring the spring-damper system subject to external displacement history to its original location, is developed. The numerical analysis for a simplified frame structure shows how including the developed self-centering viscous damper system leads to an enhanced seismic performance of the frame structure through energy dissipation during earthquake excitation.
A GA-based optimum design algorithm and a program for plane steel frame structures with semi-rigid connections are presented. The algorithm is incorporated with the refined plastic hinge analysis method wherein geometric nonlinearity is considered by using the stability functions of beam-column members, and material nonlinearity, by using the gradual stiffness degradation model that includes the effects of residual stresses, moment redistribution through the occurrence of plastic hinges, semi-rigid connections, and geometric imperfection of members. In the genetic algorithm, the tournament selection method and micro-GAs are employed. The fitness function for the genetic algorithm is expressed as an unconstrained function composed of objective and penalty functions. The objective and penalty functions are expressed as the weight of steel frames and the constraint functions, respectively. In particular, the constraint functions fulfill the requirements of load-carrying capacity, serviceability, ductility, and construction workability. To verify the appropriateness of the present method, the optimal design results of two plane steel frames with rigid and semi-rigid connections are compared.

During the welding process, welding distortion is caused by the non-uniformity of the temperature distribution in the weldment. Welding distortion is redistributed because the residual stress and rigidity change according to the removal of the welded structure. In shipbuilding in particular, this phenomenon may be observed during the cutting process of lugs that are attached to blocks for transfer. The redistribution of welding distortion also causes problems, such as damage to the cutting tool. The aim of this study is to experimentally analyze the redistribution of welding distortion because of the partial removal of the welded structure. In the experiments conducted in this study, fillet welding and cutting were performed, and longitudinal bending and angular distortion in the welded structures were then investigated and analyzed.
In this study, pullout tests were carried out to evaluate pullout characteristics of waste fishing net (WFN), which added into bottom ash for recycling both bottom ash and WFN. Three different mesh size of WFN (WFN20:$20mm{\times}20mm$, WFN30:$30mm{\times}30mm$, WFN40:$40mm{\times}40mm$) and geogrid were added as a reinforcement. Pullout characteristics of waste fishing net were compared with those of the geogrid. Pullout test results showed that pullout strength and stiffness of WFN20 are a little less than those of geogrid. However, the pullout friction angle of WFN20 is similar to that of geogrid due to bearing resistance induced from transverse rib because thickness of WFN20 is greater than geogrid. Pullout test results also indicated that distribution of residual strain along reinforcement after test depends on overburden stress. Residual strain at the tip of reinforcement increased with an increase in overburden stress due to concentration of pullout force on the tip of reinforcement.
