Effect of the Rock Characteristics Condition on the Behavior of Tunnel by Numerical Analysis (수치해석에 의한 암반특성의 변화가 터널에 미치는 영향)

  • The selection of the support system is an important design parameter in design and construction of the tunnel using the new Australian tunnel method. It is a common practice to select the support based on the rock mass grade, in which the rock mass is classified into five rock groups. The method is applicable if the characteristics of the rock mass are uniform in the direction of tunnel excavation. However, such case is seldom encountered in practice and not applicable when the properties vary along the longitudinal direction. This study performs comprehensive three dimensional finite difference analyses to investigate the ground deformation pattern for cases in which the rock mass properties change in the direction of the tunnel axis. The numerically calculated displacements at the tunnel crown show that the displacement is highly dependent on the stiffness contrast of the rock masses. The results strongly indicate the need to select the support type $0.5{\sim}1.0D$ before the rock mass boundary. The paper proposes a new guideline for selecting the support type based the results of the analyses.

A STUDY ON THE ROLL-ALONG TECHNIQUE USED IN 2D ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY SURVEYS (2차원 전기비저항 탐사에 사용되는 ROLL-ALONG 기법에 대한 고찰)

  • The validity and efficiency of the roll-along technique widely used in 2-D electrical resistivity survey are analyzed in case of the dipole-dipole and the Wenner-Schlumberger arrays by numerical modelling. The shallow anomalous resistivity bodies are successfully inverted both in the dipole-dipole and in the Wenner-Schlumberger arrays because the shallow data of pseudosection are not omitted by the roll-along technique. However, the deep anomalous resistivity bodies can not be well resolved due to the skip of observed data which is more significant in the Wenner-Schlumberger array having relatively poor horizontal coverage of obtaining data. Carrying out electrical survey adopting the dipole-dipole array, the skip of data is insignificant because it is unfeasible to expand the electrodes to the maximum electrode separation coefficient($n_max$) owing to low S/N ratio. In case of the Wenner-Schlumberger array, however, because it is generally feasible to expand the electrodes $n_max$ to the owing to high S/N ratio, it is highly possible that skip of data from the roll-along technique causes significant distortion of inversion results. Therefore, adopting the Wenner-Schlumberger array having deeper median depth(Edwards, 1977) than do the dipole-dipole array on condition of the same unit electrode spacing( ($a$) ) and $n_max$, it is recommended to determine $a$ based on not $n_max$but $n_prob$free from the skip of observing data and forward electrodes with keeping overlap interval 3/4 of the survey line length in order to reduce the distortion of resistivity structure and perform resistivity survey efficiently. These results are confirmed by numerical modelling.

Laboratory and Field Performance Evaluation of Acryl Resin Based Solar Radiation Reflective Pavement (아크릴 수지를 이용한 차열성 포장의 실내 및 현장 공용성 평가)

  • This study developed a solar radiation reflection pavement, so called a cool pavement, to lessen the urban heat island effect by coating a pavement surface with acrylic resins mixed with light-colored pigments. From a laboratory test, simulating solar heating process in pavements, the cool pavement reduced more than $12^{\circ}C$ of pavement temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ compared to a control porous pavement. With the increase of the mixing ratio of the pigments to acrylic resins, the temperature reduction effect increased, but its workability became worse due to higher viscosity. As a result, an appropriate mixing ratio was determined as 15%. The cool pavement had better durability than the control pavement: One quarter of Catabro loss and twofold dynamic stability. Its adhesion was also higher enough not to be debonded under traffic loading. In-situ noise and friction tests conducted in two field sites showed that the cool pavement reduced its noise level by 3.7dB in average and increased its friction level by 30% compared to the control pavement. The permeability of the cool pavement was little lower than the control pavement, but higher enough to satisfy the minimum requirement for porous pavements.

Evaluation of the Characteristics of Asphalt Release Agents (국내 아스팔트 릴리스 에이전트의 특성 평가)

  • Viscosity, adhesion and cohesion of asphalt binder are very important characteristics in asphalt pavement. However, these characteristics can cause some problems such as inaccurate amount of asphalt mixture, reduction of asphalt content and loss of workability during asphalt pavement construction. Asphalt release agent has been used to solve these problems. Diesel oil and vegetable oil are generally used as an asphalt release agent in Korea. However, these agents have been criticized from environmental and binder integrity reasons. Therefore, this study evaluated the characteristics of asphalt release agents including diesel oil, vegetable oil and two emulsion type oils. From the study, it was found that the diesel oil resolved the binder within ten minutes and vegetable oil stripped the binder from mixture within one hour after contacting with asphalt mixture. And also, from the test for estimating the application cycle of asphalt release agent, it appears that diesel oil and vegetable oil should be applied to construction equipments every time in their uses. However, diesel oil and vegetable oil showed a good performance as a lubricant for detaching the asphalt mixtures from the truck bed.

  • 강원도 남부(영월)와 충북 제천, 단양 등지에 널리 분포하는 석회암에서 유래된 토양은 점토 및 철분함량이 많은 식질계 토양이며 pH와 염기포화도(Base Saturation)가 높은 붉은색 토양이다. 이 토양은 식양질과 식질 등의 세립(細粒)질로만 구성이 되어 있고 자갈이 있는 토양으로 분류된다. 따라서, 토양의 침투 및 투수속도가 우리나라 토양의 주 모재인 화강암이나 화강편마암 유래 토양과는 다른 양상을 보인다. 본 연구는 세립질 특성을 보이는 석회암 유래 토양의 지표면에서의 침투속도와 토양층위별 투수속도를 측정해 복잡하게 세분되어 있는 토양의 종류를 수문학적인 목적에 따라 단순화하기 위해 만든 수문학적 토양유형을 분류하고자 하였다. 실험을 위해 이용된 토양은 과림, 모산, 장성, 마지, 안미, 평안통의 6개 토양이었고 장력 침투계(Disc tension infiltrometer)와 투수속도 측정계(Guelph permeameter)로 침투 및 투수속도를 측정했다. 현장측정 이후 추정식의 개발을 위해 토양층위별로 시료를 채취하여 실험실조건에서 입도분포, 유기물함량을 측정했다. 토양통별 침투 및 투수속도를 측정한 결과는 유기물 층이 존재하는 과림통은 공극이 많고 토층 내에 나무 및 식물뿌리가 존재해 전체적으로 침투 및 투수속도가 빠른 특성을 보여 수문유형을 A로 분류되었다. 모산통은 토층 내에 자갈함량이 아주 높고 투수속도가 다른 토양에 비해 월등히 빠른 특성을 나타냈으나 50cm이내에서 암반층이 존재하는 관계로 수문유형이 C로 분류되었다. 토층이 깊지 않은 장성통은 토층 내에 나무 및 식물뿌리가 많고 암석노출지가 존재해 침투속도가 빠름에도 불구하고 C 수문유형으로 분류됐다. 자갈이나 잔돌이 많은 마지통은 잔자갈이 존재하고 침투나 투수속도가 빠른 편으로 A유형이었다. 논으로 사용되는 안미통은 다른 석회암 유래토양에 비해 토층이 깊은 편이며 석회암 충적층에서 유래된 토양으로 선상지 및 곡간지에 분포한다. 관개된 상태에서 로타리 작업에 의해 표토의 특성이 교란되는 논으로 이용되는 특성 때문에 침투 및 투수속도는 느려 C유형으로 분류됐다. 잔돌이 존재하는 평안통은 석회암 붕적, 퇴적층으로부터 유래된 토양으로 산록경사지 및 선상단구에 분포하며 표토층인 A층에서 중입상구조를 보이며 공극이 많고 작물뿌리가 매우 많아 침투속도는 빠르나 B층에서는 점토 함량이 감소했다 증가하면서 토성이 급격히 바뀌는 특성을 나타내 투수속도는 느린 값을 보였으나 수분학적 토양유형은 B유형으로 분류됐다.

Analysis of the Reading Performance of a Gate-Type RFID System Using the UHF Band to Detect Cartons of Red Pepper (고추의 생산이력 및 물류관리를 위한 UHF 대역 게이트형 RFID 시스템의 인식능력 분석)

  • The study was conducted to analyze the tag reading and box recognition performance of a gate-type RFID system using the UHF band to detect containers of red pepper. The reading rate of tags attached to container boxes was higher as tags were closer to antennas and the number of antennas was increased. Under optimal conditions, the reading rate was 100% and the range of distance from a carton to an antenna was 1-4 meters. When tags were attached to two sides of a box, the reading rate was lower when the tags were attached at the front and side. This was caused by data collision problems between tags. The reading rate of tags was 71.1-77.8% and the reading rate of red pepper boxes was 97.8-100.0% when the distance between the pallet under the boxes and four units of antennas was 5 meters or less, and when tags were attached at the front and side of boxes.

Flexural Tensile Strength of CJP Groove Welded Joints Connecting Thick HSA800 Plates (HSA800 후판재의 완전용입 맞댐용접부 휨-인장강도 실험)

  • As a continuing work of previously conducted standard tension tests, full-scale flexural tests were conducted in this study to assess the structural performance the CJP groove welded joints connecting thick HSA800 plates. Two welding electrodes were available at the time of this experimental research; one was GMAW-based electrode A and the other FCAW-based electrode B. Three full-scale box-type beam specimens with single bevel- and V-groove CJP welded joints were fabricated from 60mm and 25mm thick HSA800 plates according to the AWS-prequalified groove welded joint details. In designing the specimens, all possible limit states like local and lateral torsional buckling were carefully controlled in order to induce flexural plastic yielding or eventual joint fracture. All the CJP joints made by both welding electrodes showed satisfactory performance and were able to transfer the tensile flange forces higher than that corresponding to the measured tensile strength of HSA800 flange plates. However, it should be noted that, during fabrication, serious concerns about the welding efficiency and workability of the GMAW-based electrode were raised by a certified welder. The fracture occurred at the unbeveled (or vertical) interface between the weldment and the base metal when the GMAW-based electrode was used in the single-bevel joint, implying the possibility of insufficient melting. Thus, the FCAW-based electrode B is again recommended as the choice of welding electrode for HSA800 plates. The limited test data of this study implies that the V-groove CJP joint should be used in favor of the single bevel CJP joint, if possible.

  • This study reexamines the old concept and reviews prevalent statements on Cenozoic vertical motions of the peninsula that have been uncritically repeated in our academia. The contents of this paper are redefinition of the notion, tilted flexure or warping, and a suggestion for a new time set and properties of the deformation, followed by a new model on its influencing factors and processes. In conclusion, the Cenozoic vertical motion of the Korean peninsula can be reified further with an epeirogenic movement of uplift in the east side-subsidence in the west side of the peninsula since the Neogene (23 Ma). However, the regional boundary for areas of uplift and subsidence is not likely in the Korean peninsula but broader farther to East China and the southern part of Russia. It can be best understood that mantle convection produced by subducting activities in the Western Pacific Subduction Zone causes the uplift and subsidence of earth surface around NE Asia. In addition, faultings in the upper lithosphere induced by in-situ plate boundary stresses accelerate regional uplift in the peninsula since the Quaternary. Controversies that are still standing such as current uplift movements along the western coast of the peninsula during the late Quaternary could be precisely discussed with future research providing detailed information on it.

A Study on the Utilization of Coal Fired Fly-ash as Microfine Grouting Materials (초미립자 지반주입재로서 플라이애쉬의 적용성에 관한 연구)

  • At the end of 1997 about 3 million tons of coal ash was produced as byproducts from the coal fired electrical power plants in Korea. Only about 27% of that byproducts was utilized as the admixtures of cement and concrete industry. But the large quantity of coal fired fly-ash has been used as the soil improvement materials in other countries. So the aim of this study is the estimation of the applicability of the coal fired fly-ash as microfine grouting materials by admixing the superfine particles which were separated from the coal fired fly-ash for the higher values. The 6 types of specimens were manufactured in the laboratory for the purpose of estimating the chemical and physical properties of cement and grouts. These specimens consisted of 2 specific surfaces of 6, 000 and 8, 000$cm^2$/g in Elaine method. And these specimens are devide into 3 ratios (30%, 50%, 70%) of fly-ash by weight. From the estimated properties of the coal fired fly-ash microflne cements and grouts, 50% fly-ash is the most suitable ratio for grouting materials. However, further study of durability is necessary for using fly-ash grouts practically at the field projects. The higher content of the unburned carbon of fly-ash increases the thinner layer of carbon on the surface of solution of grouts, and requires more quantity of surface active agent. As a results of this study, it is found that the microfine fly-ash is very useful as a good grouting material if 50% of fly-ash is added with the microfine portland cement. So, in the near future, if the coal fired fly-ash is able to be used as grouting material in Korea, the demand of fly-ash will increase rapidly.

Study on Establishment of Food Material Size Specification Based on Elementary School Menus (초등학교 급식 식단별 식재료 크기 설정에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to establish size specification of food material for elementary school meals, researched at school meal scene and surveyed with questionnaires about the management of food materials by workers devoted to preparing school meals. Most subjects (80.7%) answered that students were served smaller size than adults, whereas 11.0% answered that they served different sizes according to school age and 8.3%, that they served same size as adult. About the food material size specification for elementary school student, a majority of respondents reported that 3/4 or 2/4 of adult served size was suitable. The serving size was decided and executed to investigate the actual intake and the preference of students for food size by 2 methods, intake ratio and questionnaire in 6 elementary schools. It showed that intake ratio and preference of students may be changed by serving size. According to the result, food serving size was divided in 3 types per menu and food size was measured precisely using the white board inscripted calibration. Actual food serving size for adult and recommended food serving size for elementary school student was compared. The data collected were coded and used to decide food material specifications for 12 cooked vegetable items, 15 raw vegetable items, 9 kimchi items, 2 fermented fish and fish sauce items, 8 deep-fried items, 5 meat and meat product items, 19 fish items and 5 dried food items.
