  • Flow visualization study to qualitatively define the flow field over a stealth UCAV(Uninhabited Combat Air Vehicle) configuration in a water tunnel has been conducted to clarify the basic aerodynamic performance. The test was performed at freestream velocity of 12.7 cm/sec which was corresponding to a Reynolds number of $1.4{\times}10^4$ based on mean aerodynamic chord. The development and breakdown of vortices illuminated by using dye were compared to the previous force and moment data. It was shown that the effect of the vortices generated by the main-body and junction are dominant in the low angle-of-attack region. However, in the high angle-of-attack region, the vortex generated by the fore-body mainly influenced the aerodynamic performance of the model.

  • In this study, the free motion of a riser due to vortex shedding was numerically simulated with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) turbulence models. A numerical simulation program was developed by applying the Rhie-Chow interpolation method to the pressure correction of the OpenFOAM standard solver pimpleDyMFoam. To verify the developed program, the vortex shedding around the fixed riser at Re = 3900 was calculated, and the results were compared with the existing experimental and numerical data. Moreover, the vortex-induced vibration of a riser supported by a linear spring was numerically simulated while varying the spring constant. The results are compared with published direct numerical simulation (DNS) results. The present calculation results show that the numerical method is appropriate for simulating the vortex-induced motion of a riser, including lock-in phenomena.

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface patches. To verity the validity of the developed program the numerical calculations for Wigley hull and Series 60( $C_B=0.6$) hull have been performed and the results obtained by the numerical calculations have been compared with the original hulls.

  • An experimental study has been carried out at circulating water channel to investigate the non-breaking and breaking waves generated by a submerged circular cylinder steadily moving under the free surface. Free surface profiles and pressure distributions on cylinder surface were measured at various submerged depths of cylinder. They were complemented by the measurements of velocities, head losses and turbulence intensities in the wakes of body and "breaker". Part 1 of this three-part paper describes the experimental arrangement and the patterns of wave profile and pressure distribution at various depths of submergence. These databank contributions are of special interest in traditional ship hydrodynamics. In Part 2, special focuses are made to elucidate the viscous and turbulent aspects of flow field. Finally Part 3 will deal with the visualization of instantaneous vortical flow to study the mutual interaction between vorticies shedded from the free-surface and the cylinder using a Particle Image Velocimetry.

  • For the prediction on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown, computational studies on the Oblique Shock wave/Vortex Interaction (OSVI) are conducted and compared with both experimental results and analytic mode1. A Shock-stable numerical scheme, the Roe scheme with Mach number-based function (RoeM), and a two-equation eddy viscosity-transport approach arc used for three-dimensional turbulent flow computations. The computational configuration is identical to available experiment, and we attempt to ascertain the effect of parameters such as a vortex strength, streamwise velocity deficit, and shock strength at a freestream Mach number of 2.49. Numerical simulations using the k-w SST turbulence model and suitably modeled vortex profiles are able to accurately reproduce many fine features through a direct comparison with experimental observations. The present computational approach to determine the criterion on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown is found to be in good agreement with both the experimental result and the analytic prediction.

  • A two-dimensional numerical method for inviscid two-fluid flows with evolution of density interface is developed, and an initially stationary two-dimensional fluid sheet surrounded by another fluid is studied. The interface between two fluids is modeled as a vortex sheet, and the flow field with the evolution of interface is solved by using vortex-in-cell/front-tracking method. The edge of the sheet is pulled back into the sheet due to surface tension and a blob is formed at the edge. This blob and fluid sheet are connected by a thin neck. In the inviscid limit, such process of the blob and neck formation is examined in detail and their kinematic characteristics are summarized with dimensionless parameters. The edge recedes at and the capillary wave propagating into the fluid sheet must be considered for better understanding of the edge receding.

  • In the design of sailing yachts, para-glider, or high-sky wind power, etc., the analysis of side-wind aerodynamic forces exerted on a cambered 3-D model is very important to predict the performance of various machinery systems. To understand the essential flow physics around the three-dimensional shape, simplified rigid-body models are proposed in this study. Four parameters such as free stream velocity, angle of attack, aspect ratio, and camber are considered as the independent variables. Lift and drag coefficients are computed with CFD technique using ANSYS-CFX, and the results with the visualization of post-processed flow fields are analyzed in the viewpoint of fluid dynamics.

  • In this study, we selected CFRP to construct a canoe hull. A ship design was made using a commercial ship design program, SOLIDWORKS, and a flow analysis of the canoe on a free surface was calculated using STAR-CCM+. A flow field and waveform were obtained in this way. These results were used to check the resistant performance of the canoe. Results showed that if the draft is 0.09 m, it is safe to run at less than 4 m/s, and if draft is 0.24 m, it is safe to run at less than 2 m/s. Moreover, it was confirmed that those speeds can be made by two adults. The developed canoe, which is 20 % lighter in comparison with conventional FRP models, was briefly introduced in this paper.
