The Photoluminance Properties of Blue Phosphor with Chemical Composition in BaO-MgO-$Al_2O_3$ System (BaO-MgO-$Al_2O_3$계에서 조성변화에 따른 청색 형광체의 발광특성)

  • The optical properties with chemical composition change in BaO- MgO-$AI_2O_3$, system activated by divalent Eu ion were investigated under 254nm ultraviolet(UV) and 147nm vacuum ultraviolet(VUV). These phosphors emitted a blue light at a dominant wavelength of $\lambda$=445nm under UV and VUV irradiations. It was found that the brightness of $BaMgAI_{14}O_{23}$ phosphor increased with Eu concentration up to 10% under UV but it showed a maximum emitting intensity at 5% Eu for VUV. The emitting intensity of blue color of $BaMgAl_{10}O_{l7}$ phosphor was higher than that of $BaMgAI_{14}O_{23}$for both excitation. A further improvement in brightness was obtained for $Ba_{o.9}Ca_{0.1}MaAl_{14}O_{23}$ and $Ba_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MgAl_{10}O_{17}$ phosphor synthesized by the substition of $Ba^{+2}$ ion with O.lmole of $Ca^{+2}$ or $Sr^{+2}$ ions in $BaMgAl_{IO}O_{17}$: Eu phosphor.

Detection of fluorescence from soils contaminated with monoaromatic hydrocarbons (유류 오염 토양에서의 단일방향족 탄화수소 농도 측정을 위한 자외선 형광 분석에 관한 연구)

  • In order to determine the contamination of the aromatic hydrocarbons in soil, a fiber-optic sensing technique with fluorescence detector has been proposed. Previous researches have shown that the optimal condition for detecting benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX) was 260 nm /290 nm (excitation/emission wavelength). However, broader fluorescence spectra of BTEX-polluted soil sample ranging from 300 nm to 600 nm were observed. Additionally, the intensity of fluorescence increased with increasing BTEX concentration, which was conspicuous in the fine-particle soil, The overall results indicated that the suggested technique could be useful for in-situ monitoring system for subsurface oil-storage tank.

  • As a pilot experiment for developing the monitoring system for oil spill from storage tank, previous approach of monitoring contaminated oil from mixed soil sample had the limitation that it cannot reflect the real situations of the contamination. In this study, more realistic contamination condition and water contents were considered. Fluorescence intensity was not affected by water contents. To acquire the stability of media, sand, Ca-bentonite, alumina, Fe-oxide, bead and silica were tested. Only sand was suitable to our system. These results should provide basic information for constructing reliable monitoring system.

Change of fluorescence in ambers according to artificial aging (인공열화에 따른 호박(amber)의 형광특성 변화)

  • Ambers are composed of polymer molecules which contain aromatic moieties such as benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene and anthracene. They emit fluorescence when irradiated with ultraviolet light, which was used for confirming an amber. The fluorescence of amber, however, tends to decrease as the surface of amber is weathered with light, heat, oxygen for a long time. In this study, the reliability of confirming amber with its fluorescence by measuring the changes of fluorescence after artificial aging. Aging factors were UV light (${\lambda}$=340 nm), oxygen with heat (100%, $90^{\circ}C$) and heat ($90^{\circ}C$) and aging time was for 5, 15, 30 and 60 days, respectively. In the excitation and emission spectra of amber, the intensity decreased and the maximal wavelength was shifted to longer wavelength with artificial aging time. Especially, there was a drastic decrease in the intensity of spectra to 1.7% of initial value after 60 days aging under oxygen with heat. Only in Colombian amber there showed an increase of fluorescence intensity for a certain aging time, which could be explained by the production of aromatic ring in the presence of light and heat. Conclusively, the fluorescence can be lessened by the natural weathering with light, heat and oxygen and it is not accurate to recognize amber just with UV irradiation method.

Morphological Changes of Hair Structure by UV Irradiation (자외선 조사에 의한 모발구조의 형태학적 변화)

  • In this study, we have investigated the effects of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the external and internal structure of human hair. For changes in morphological and chemical structure of UV-exposed hair, we utilized several microscopic techniques such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), and etc. The SEM showed the scales of UV-exposed hair appeared to be rough and bulkier because of chemical oxidation during UV irradiation. Small bulgy area of UV_exposed hair surface was appeared as a result of the decomposition in cysteic acid. In the TEM picture the UV-exposed hair showed the cleaved aperture of hair and destruction of melanin granules. Three dimensional topographical images were obtained by using CLSM. In the optical single section, high fluorescent intensity appeared in virgin hair. In the case of UV-exposed hair, low fluorescence intensity appeared. This means the aromatic amino acids in virgin hair were more abundant than UV-exposed hair.

차세대 광원 LED 응용을 위한 형광체 기술 현황

  • 최근 유력한 차세대 광원으로 떠오르고 있는 발광 다이오드(LED, light emitting diode)는 화합물 반도체의 특성을 이용해 전기를 자외선, 가시광선, 적외선 등으로 전환시키는 반도체 소자로 에너지 효율이 매우 높고, 수명이 길어 교체 비용이 적으며, 진동이나 충격에도 강하고, 수은 등 유독물질의 사용이 불필요하기 때문에 에너지 절약, 환경보호, 비용절감 차원에서 매우 유리하다. 현재 LED 분야에 있어 주로 연구개발이 진행되고 있는 분야는 조명용 백색 LED 분야 및 디스플레이 소자 분야이다. LED를 이용한 백색 조명 및 디스플레이 기기의 개발을 위해서는 그 응용 분야에 맞는 효율이 우수한 형광체의 개발이 필수적이다. 본고에서는 현재 조명용 백색 LED 및 디스플레이 분야에 응용되는 형광체의 개발 현황을 위해 주로 연구동향을 분석하였다.
