  • The hearing impaired have a substantially lower comprehension of audiovisual television programs due to their inability to hear sounds. Therefore, research was needed to improve their understanding by making these programs more accessible. This thesis is based on a proposal to find a solution for automating closed captions.

  • 본 논문에서는 ETRI 방송 뉴스 자막 처리 시스템의 성능 향상을 도모하기 위해 개발된 미등록어 검출기에 대해 기술한다. 음성 인식 성능 하락에 큰 영향을 미치는 요인들 중 하나로 꼽히는 미등록어 문제를 해결하기 위해 ETRI 방송 뉴스 자막 처리 시스템에서는 오프라인으로 동작하는 미등록어 검출기를 채택하였다. 이 미등록어 검출기는 방송 뉴스 자막 처리 시스템 가동 전에 미리 인터넷을 통해 최신 신문 기사와 방송 뉴스를 수집해와 이를 토대로 두 단계에 걸쳐 미등록어를 사전에 추출하여 인식 어휘 사전에 포함시킴으로써 미등록어로 인한 방송 뉴스의 인식 성능 저하 문제를 해결하도록 하였다.

  • 3D 영화 산업 발전과 함께 4D 영화에 관한 수요가 증가했지만, 4D 영화 제작은 복잡한 시스템과 오랜 제작 시간을 요구한다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 4D 영화 제작 방식의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 자막과 시나리오 정보를 이용한 4D 이벤트 추출 방법을 제안한다. 자막과 시나리오의 문장으로 부터 4D 이벤트와 관련된 특징을 추출하고 4D 사전과 비교하여 4D 이벤트를 분류한다. 또한, 자막과 시나리오 각각의 4D 이벤트 추출 성능을 비교한다.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of caption-embedded video on character recognition and vocabulary ability of the primary school students, The subjects of this study were the students in two elementary schools in G city, Jeonbuk province. They were divided into two groups including a control group which used utilization video materials without captions, and a experimental group which used utilization video materials with captions. Each group was tested over the course of two months (10 classes). And then a statistical analysis was conducted to find out the effects of captions on character recognition and vocabulary ability through independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test. There were no significant differences in a comparison between the groups, but significant differences were found within the groups. Pedagogical implications based on the research findings and suggestions for further research were also discussed.

Visual Attention on Subtitles of CATV Entertainment Program : Focused on tvN (케이블방송 예능프로그램 자막의 시각적 주의 : tvN <꽃보다 할배>를 중심으로)

  • This study has attempted to explore the audience's visual attention about the subtitles types of CATV entertainment program. To achieve this, this research has measured the dwell time and average fixation data through the eye-tracking test and analysed the reason of particular visual attention by in-depth interview. According to the eye-tracking research findings, four types of subtitles(character metaphor, character metonymy, event metaphor, event metonymy) were measured the highest dwell time and average fixation time. Also, according to in-depth interview, visual attention was clearly turned up that event metonymy constructs the conflicts between characters and overstates the trip place romantically. This results means that staffs of intensify the reality and visual pleasure through event metonymic subtitles.

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the relationship between the DVEs and subtitles provided with anchor speech in TV news and the news evaluation, trust and agenda recognition. 120 university students were asked to watch four types of news that differed in the contents of their DVEs and subtitles, and then they evaluated the fairness, sensibility, and irritability of the news. The content of DVEs and subtitles were related to the irritability evaluation and trust of the news, and it was not related with the fairness and sensibility evaluation. When the DVEs and subtitles emphasizing the stimulating aspects of the issue were given, the irritability was highly evaluated and the trust was low. The evaluation on news fairness affected the news trust. The more they rated news as fair, the greater the trust in news. Unlike the assumption in this study, DVEs and subtitles were not the main factors influencing the news agenda perception, and the viewers tended to perceive the agenda based on the news content itself.

  • This paper describes the development of a network-based passenger information system(PIS) which provides the convenience of the passenger of the train and heightens the effect of the subtitle service, the advertising and the shelter guidance broadcasting against the urgent event. The existing system uses VGA signal distributor in order to broadcast information with image and subtitle and voice guidance. In this paper we improve the existing system by applying the UDP and TCP/IP protocol and use a reference clock to solve a data loss and synchronization problem which occurs in this case. We also developed an XML-based subtitle authoring tool which can edit and play the subtitles with various 3D to improve the automatic guidance broadcasting and advertisement effect according to the operation schedule of the train. The system performance was evaluated through a simulation.

  • Nowadays, mass media innovates and has the great power of revolution of our lives. Marshall MacLuhan says new media is the new method of language and also, it is connecting to the real world possibly. The letters make media world a big different. At the end of voiceless age, the caption not only delivers means of the contents but also provides for the composition of the screen itself. In these kinds of composition elements contain explanations such as aesthetic, entertainment, and revival aspects. The caption as translation that used to use was as changing as new way of exploring method. To deliver means of contents, the letters of inside screen has extremely big changes and meaning as well. The design of lettering is the new aesthetic method of media world. Also, the elements of lettering is approaching as the new way of lives. Therefore, this study is to provide the aspects of the lettering to the mass media respectively.

Reducing the Test Time for Chemical Durability of PEMFC Polymer Membrane (PEMFC 고분자막의 화학적 내구성 평가시간 단축)

  • The durability of the PEMFC stack for large commercial vehicles should be more than 5 times that for passenger vehicles. If the Chemical Accelerated Stress Test (AST) of PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells) membrane for passenger cars is applied as it is for large commercial vehicles, there is a problem that the AST time becomes more than 2,500 hours. In order to shorten the AST time of DOE (Department of Energy), the chemical durability of the polymer membrane was evaluated using oxygen instead of air as a cathode gas. In this study, Nafion XL was used as a polymer membrane to evaluate accelerated durability under OCV, 90?, RH 30%, H2/(air or oxygen) conditions. Among the DOE membrane durability target criteria, the decrease rate of short resistance was the fastest. By using oxygen instead of air, the degradation rate of the polymer membrane was accelerated while being less affected by electrode deterioration, reducing the polymer membrane durability evaluation time to less than half.

  • Since the durability evaluation for improving the durability of PEMFC polymer membranes is very important for the development of PEMFC, research and development of the polymer membrane durability evaluation protocol (AST) continues. Recently, DOE's polymer membrane chemical/mechanical durability evaluation AST was developed and applied to Nafion XL for review. In order to shorten the evaluation time, oxygen was used as a cathode gas instead of air, and it was finished in 144 hours. Since DOE AST has a large number of voltage changes with 45 seconds of humidification and 30 seconds of drying, the degradation of the electrode has more influence on the MEA durability. Therefore, one cycle time was lengthened with 60sec of wet/300sec of dry, and the drying time was made longer than the humidification time to further deteriorate the polymer membrane, and it was finished in 240 hours. It was confirmed that the DOE AST for evaluation of the durability of the polymer membrane was accompanied by electrode degradation.
