Accurate state estimation is important for autonomous driving. However, the estimation error increases in situations that a lot of longitudinal slip occurs. Therefore, this paper presents a vehicle state estimation method using an Extended Kalman Filter. The filter estimates the states of the host vehicle robust to wheel slip. It utilizes the measurements of the four-wheel rotational speeds, longitudinal acceleration, yaw-rate, and steering wheel angle. Nonlinear measurement model is represented by Ackermann Model. The main advantage of this approach is the accurate estimation of yaw rate due to the measurement of the steering wheel angle. The proposed algorithm is verified in scenarios of autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane change (LC), lane keeping (LK) using an automated vehicle. The results show that the proposed algorithm guarantees accurate estimation in such scenarios.

Path generation methods are required for safe and efficient driving in unmanned autonomous vehicles. There are two kinds of paths: global and local. A global path consists of all the way points including the source and the destination. A local path is the trajectory that a vehicle needs to follow from a way point to the next in the global path. In this paper, we propose a novel method for local path generation through machine learning, with an effective curve function used for initializing the trajectory. First, reinforcement learning is applied to a set of candidate paths to produce the best trajectory with maximal reward. Then the optimal steering angle with respect to the trajectory is determined by training an artificial neural network. Our method outperformed existing approaches and successfully found quality paths in various experimental settings, including the cases with obstacles.

In the paper, we propose an intelligent automatic parking assist system. To realize an automatic parking, first, the prospective parking position and the location of a vehicle should be recognized. Second, the system should compute a path which introduces the parking position precisely with avoiding any obstacles. Third, the handle should be controlled so that the vehicle moves through the path. To calculate the location of the vehicle and its surroundings, the system applies the camera image method to transforming input images to the plane map. It also uses the inertial navigation method which recognizes the position and the direction of a moving vehicle by using a kinematic model of the vehicle. To generate a path of the vehicle, the simple path method and the Bezier spline method are tested. The divided arc method which generates multiple paths is also tested. We apply a method which makes the system choose the best path with multiple objective functions. We introduce the virtual road method, as a solution for the problem of mechanical time delay, to have the vehicle followed the designated path.

An automotive ball joint connects the suspension system to the steering system and helps to enable rotational and linear motion between the two elements for steering. This study examines a ball joint used in medium and large-sized pickup trucks. Ball joints consist of a stud, socket, bearing, and plug. The main structural performance metrics of ball joints are the pull-out strength and push-out strength. These structural parameters must meet certain criteria to avoid serious accidents. Test and simulation methods are used to investigate the design requirements, but tests are time-consuming and costly. In this study, we modeled ball joints in SolidWorks and performed a finite element analysis in Abaqus to predict structural performance. The analysis was used to obtain the structural performance required for the static analysis of a 2D axisymmetric model. The uncertainties in the manufacturing of the ball joint were assumed to be the manufacturing tolerances, and the dimensional design variables were identified through case studies. The manufacturing tolerances at each level were defined, and the results were compared with experimental results.

Outer tie rod is lighter than other, but there is the trend item weight and the number is increasing due to vehicle performance improvement. Thus, to improve vehicle fuel efficiency, weight lightening is essential. Therefore, this research performed the finite element analysis to investigate the structural performance of the outer tie rod for an electrical vehicle. This study was performed as the preliminary study for a lightweight design of the outer tie rod. The weight of outer tie rod was optimized by adopting the steel material and applying the trial and error method. The strengths due to durability and buckling should be considered in the structural design of an outer tie rod. Furthermore, the meta model-based optimization was applied to obtain its lightweight design, leading to 9 % weigh reduction.

Bimodal tram is designed to run on a dedicated path in automatic mode using a magnetic track system in order to realize a combination of the accessibility of a bus and the constant regularity of a railroad. This paper presents design and test results of the series hybrid propulsion system of the bimodal tram on both test track and public road, which uses CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine and Lithium polymer battery pack. This paper describes the real-time data measuring equipment for the series hybrid propulsion system of the bimodal tram. Using this measurement equipment, the performance of the prototype vehicle's driving on test track and public road was verified and the fuel consumption and the efficiency of CNG engine have been investigated.

In this paper, we develop a sliding mode control for steering wheel angle control based on torque overlay in order to resolve the problem of previous methods for Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems in the Lane Keeping System (LKS) of autonomous vehicles. For the controller design, we propose a 2nd order model of the electric power steering system in an autonomous LKS. The desired state model is designed to prevent a rapid change of the steering wheel angle. The sliding mode steering wheel angle controller is developed for the robustness of the disturbance. Since the proposed method is designed based on torque overlay, torque integration with basic functions of the EPS system for the steering wheel angle control is available for the driver's convenience. The performance of the proposed method was validated via experiments.

The final step of driving a car is parking, which is the most difficult part for people learning to drive. Parking in narrow parking spaces is difficult for both ordinary drivers and beginners. To solve this problem, the development of SPAS (Smart Parking Assist System), ACC (Automatic Control System) improves the convenience of drivers. In addition, parking assistance systems have been developed to recognize more accurately the surrounding environment to the driver using the ultrasound, camera, thermal camera, and radar. This paper proposes the reverse turning radius to process images as if the camera is located in the center of the vehicle regardless of the actual camera position. In addition, it generates the parking guidelines through verification using the vehicle.

In this paper, we suggest a vision-based lane change control system, which can be applied on the straight road, without additional sensors such as a yaw rate sensor and a lateral accelerometer. In order to reduce the image processing time, we predict a reference line position during lane change using the lateral dynamics and the inverse perspective mapping. The sliding mode control algorithm with a boundary layer is adopted to overcome variations of parameters that significantly affects a vehicle`s lateral dynamics and to reduce chattering phenomenon. However, applying the sliding mode control to the system with a long sampling interval, the stability of a control system may seriously be affected by the sampling interval. Therefore, in this paper, a look ahead offset has been used instead of a lateral offset to reduce the effect of the long sampling interval due to the image processing time. The control algorithm is developed to follow the desired trajectory designed in advance. In the design of the desired trajectory, we take account of the constraints of lateral acceleration and lateral jerk for ride comfort. The performance of the suggested control system is evaluated in simulations as well as field tests.
This paper presents a unified control algorithm of independent braking and steering for collision avoidance. The desired motion of the vehicle in the yaw plane is determined using the probabilistic risk assessment method based on target state estimation. For the purpose of coordinating the independent braking and steering, a non-linear vehicle model has been developed, which describes the vehicle dynamics in the yaw plane in both linear and extended non-linear ranges of handling. A control allocation algorithm determines the control inputs that minimize the difference between the desired and actual vehicle motions, while satisfying all actuator constraints. The performance of the proposed control algorithm has been investigated via computer simulations conducted using the vehicle dynamics software CARSIM and Matlab/Simulink.
