(National Survey of Family and Households)에서 추출했다.

  • This study aims to examine the mediating effect of parental monitoring and child's self-esteem on the relationship between parental time and child's life satisfaction in single mother families. For this purpose, MOGEF (Ministry of Gender Equality and Family)'s 'Research data of adolescents in 2015' was used and 117 single mothers and their children aged 9 to 18 were selected for the analysis. Structural Equation model analysis reveals that adolescent's self-esteem has a mediating effect on the relationship between parental time and adolescent's life satisfaction, though parental time and parental monitoring have no significant effect on adolescent's life satisfaction. With these results, policy suggestions to support single mothers' parental time were proposed.

  • This study examines changes and educational differences in parental time spent in childcare. Based on time diary data 1999-2009, it finds as follows. First, compared to 1999, parental time spent in childcare has increased in 2009. Unlike the tendency of convergence of time spent in childcare by sex in US, differences by sex have increased in Korea. Second, those who are highly educated tend to spend more time with children than their counterparts. For preschool aged children, parental time spent in physical care and playing has significantly increased by educational level. For school aged children, those who are highly educated are more likely than those who have lower level of education to help with children's study. Third, compared to 1999, time for leisure and economic activity has decreased in 2009 whereas time for commute, sleep, and care for others has increased.

Hierarchical multiple regression was utilized to analyze data of 1,162 people who responded to the single parent survey collected by the Korea Women's Policy Research Institute in 2018. Results showed that single parents' spending family time and participation of leisure activities influenced positive change on their school-aged children. Implications and suggestions to support single parents' parenting environment are discussed.

  • This paper analyzes the impact of the mother's employment on her time investment in children's career decisions. Parental conversations with high school children and the parents' effects on children's career decisions are used as the proxies for the quantity and quality of time investment, respectively. For the empirical analysis, IV ordered-probit regressions are fitted to the KLIPS data. Other things being equal, the mother's employment does not cast any statistically significant impact on the quantity and quality of time input for children in high school. The effect of mother's employment on her time investment in children is positive for professional jobs while negative for nonprofessional jobs, but both lack the weight of statistical significance.

  • This study focused on Japanese families engaging in childrearing to discover changes in their daily lives, such as in the role division between husband and wife and hours spent on housework and childcare, caused by the unexpected crisis of COVID-19. An empirical analysis attempted to determine whether changes in the working environment, such as working and commuting hours, affected the role division between husband and wife, as well as housework and childcare hours spent. The data analyzed were extracted from the 2021 "3rd Survey on Changes in Lifestyle Awareness and Behavior Due to the Impact of COVID-19" conducted by the Japanese Cabinet Office. A total of 983 couples aged 20 or older, living with their spouse, having at least one child under the age of 18, and both employed were selected. The analysis results were as follows: First, the division of roles between husband and wife changed in the direction of increasing the husband's role in housework and childrearing. Second, the decrease in working and commuting hours increased the husband's role. Third, housework and childcare hours were more clearly related to changes in the working environments of husbands and wives than to changes in role division between husband and wife. In conclusion, changes in men's working and commuting hours had a greater impact on role division, as well as housework and childrearing hours in the family, than changes in women's working and commuting hours. In the future, an analysis that considers labor market factors is necessary.

  • This study analyzed 2019 time survey data from the National Statistical Office to examine the childcare behaviors of fathers with preschool children and their determinants, considering types of care and working/nonworking days. The main results of this study are as follows. First, paternal childcare time of nonworking days was three times more than that of working days, and the participation rate was also higher on nonworking days. Second, there was no significant difference in the amount of time spent on primary care and developmental care by fathers, whether from dual- or single-income families. Third, it seems that fathers adjust their participation in childcare between working days and nonworking days in consideration of the mother's time availability. Fourth, the variables related to childcare needs had a significant influence on paternal childcare time on both working and nonworking days. Fathers' developmental care time was not explained by the independent variables entered into the regression analysis. As a result of the study, it is necessary to reduce fathers' working hours and increase family-friendly systems to increase fathers' participation in childrearing. Fathers' perception of parental responsibility must also be changed.
