The purpose of this study is to identify the physical and psycho-social effects of self-foot reflexology on female college students wearing high heels. The research design used was the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of sixty-eight participants were assigned to the experimental group (n=35) or control group (n=33). Data were collected at baseline and after 6 weeks and 10 weeks. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS WIN 20.0 program. In the analysis of the physical effects of self-foot reflexology, there were significant interactions of group by time in terms of the lower extremity edema and fatigue (p<.05). In the analysis of the psycho-social effects of self-foot reflexology, there were significant interactions of group by time in terms of the perceived health status and self-efficacy (p<.05), except for health promoting behavior. Self-foot reflexology was effective in reducing lower extremity edema and fatigue and in improving the perceived health status and self-efficacy. Consequently, self-foot reflexology as a nursing intervention was found to be a method of providing female college students wearing high heels with physical and psycho-social relief.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe and understand self-care status of the aged diabetic patients with noncompliance after hospital discharge. Methods: A qualitative research method was used for the study design. The participants were 15 diabetic patients aged 65 or older who had been admitted more than two times for hyperglycemia in the past 1 year in a general hospital in Daegu. Data were collected from November 1 2015 to March 1 2016 through in-depth personal interview. Results: Patients' knowledge level on causes and symptoms of diabetes was low. Most participants rarely and irregularly checked blood sugar at home. They were under a lot of stress from their family. Due to old age and illness they did not have sufficient physical activity and they have had rarely regular meals. They considered the self-care education program unnecessary and there was limitations of accessibility for education. Conclusions: The aged diabetic patients who had the repeat admission did not perform self-care activities properly and had problems especially in blood glucose check, support from their family, and health education after returning home. More personalized and community-based self-management education programs will be necessary.

Purpose : Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies in children. The purpose of this study is to observe demographic, initial presentations, duration of time between disease onset and diagnosis, clinical manifestations and laboratory findings at diagnosis of patients with JDM. Methods : Forty seven patients identified at Seoul National University Children's Hospital from January 1986 to May 2007. Medical records were reviewed retrospectively focusing on initial presentations, clinical manifestations and laboratory findings at the time of diagnosis of patients with JDM. Results : Male and female patients were 25 and 22, respectively and sex ratio was 1.14:1. The average age at the time of diagnosis was 6.51 years. Skin rash (94%) was the most common symptom, followed by the proximal muscle weakness (89%). The disease activity score was 10.8. The duration between the onset of the skin rash and the muscle weakness and diagnosis was 7.18 and 4.70 months, respectively. The serum muscle enzymes, LDH, AST, CK and aldolase, were elevated in the patient with JDM. Autoimmune antibodies, antinuclear antibody, anti SSA antibody and anti SSB antibody, were negative findings. Electromyography findings were consistent with JDM in 88% of the patients, the muscle biopsy was in 91% and all MRI findings were compatible with those of patients with JDM. The most common symptom besides musculocutaneous lesions was the calcinosis (62.5%). The most common site of calcinosis was the pelvic area and buttocks. Conclusion : This study shows that the major symptoms are proximal muscle weakness and cutaneous lesion, and they are important to diagnose JDM.
Internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) is defined as an abnormal relationship of the articular disc to the condyle. Mandibular manipulation is one of the conservative treatments to be considered first to manage the patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction. Mandibular manipulation is used to increase articular mobility and to restore the displaced disc into an anatomically normal position. While Farrar's technique has been popularly used, Minagi et al., Mongini and Suarez introduced the manipulation technique conducted by the patients themselves. But there is no study on the efficacy of self-manipulation technique, comparing with conventional one. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of the conventional and self-manipulation technique, which was modified to complement the previously described technique by Minagi et al., in the treatment of patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction. TMD patients, who visited Department of Oral Medicine of Seoul National University Dental Hospital from December, 2002 to November, 2004 and were diagnosed as anterior disc displacement without reduction by TMJ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were enrolled. Conservative treatments including physical therapy, exercise, behavioral therapy, stabilization splint therapy, and manipulation therapy were done to every single patient until the symptomsimproved enough to discharge the patient. The charts were reviewed retrospectively according to the type of manipulation. In the results, patients whose maximum mouth opening was more than 40 mm was higher in the self-manipulation group(69.9%) than in the conventional manipulation group(42.9%). But difference between two groups was not significant. According to the fact that we decided to discharge the patients whentheir mouth opening increased to more than 40 mm and subjective symptoms such as pain and discomfort were improved as well, treatment period of discharged patients was significantly shorter in the self-manipulation group($29.2{\pm}12.3$ weeks) than in the conventional manipulation group ($61.0{\pm}38.0$ weeks) (p<0.01). In conclusion, in the treatment of TMD patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction, the self-manipulation technique which is performed by patients themselves is an effective treatment modality for increasing the range of mouth opening and shortening the total treatment period.

Introduction: The objective of the present study was to investigate the independent effects of major depressive disorder (MDD) and insomnia on somatization, respectively. Methods: A total of 181 participants (73 males and 108 females ; mean age $41.59{\pm}8.92$) without serious medical problem were recruited from a community and a psychiatric clinic in Republic of Korea. Subjects were divided into 4 groups based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV axis I disorder (SCID-IV) and sleep questionnaire : 1) normal controls (n=127), 2) primary insomnia (n=11), 3) MDD without insomnia (n=14), and 4) MDD with insomnia (n=29). All participants were requested to complete the somatization subscores of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Results: There were significant between-group differences in somatization score (F=25.30, p<0.001). Subjects with both MDD and insomnia showed higher somatization score compared to normal control (p<0.001), subjects with primary insomnia (p=0.01), or MDD subjects without insomnia (p<0.001). Subjects with primary insomnia had higher somatization score than normal controls (p<0.01), while there was no significant difference between MDD subjects without insomnia and normal controls. In multiple regression, presence of insomnia predicted higher somatization score (beta=0.44, p<0.001), while there was only non-significant association between MDD and somatization (beta=0.14, p=0.08). Conclusion: In the current study, insomnia was associated with somatization independently from major depression. Subjects with primary insomnia showed higher somatization. Within MDD patients, presence of insomnia was related to higher somatization. Our finding suggests that insomnia may partly mediate the relationship between depression and somatization.
The purpose of this study attempted to collect basic data for development of an integrated self-management program for cancer survivors who completed cancer treatment. Self-management programs are divided into symptom management and physical activity management. Symptom management includes fatigue, sleep disturbance, pain, depression and anxiety. PubMed, CINAHL and EMBASE were used for searching guidelines. Based on the guideline quality evaluation, the final 8 guidelines were analyzed. The structured table was used to extract the screening subjects, timing, contents, subjects for comprehensive assessment and contents, and summarized contents related to the physical activity and exercise in non-pharmacological approach. As a result, after the completion of cancer treatment, all cancer survivors should be screened regularly using reliable and validated tools. In the case of fatigue, physical activity was recommended as the primary intervention, but it was recommended for other symptoms as adjuvant therapy. Therefore, Cancer survivors should be encouraged to be active in their physical activity, and maintain the moderate intensity physical activity as long as they have no complication related to the cancer treatment. Motivation strategies for physical activity need to be developed and applied.
This study aimed to investigate factors influencing depressive symptoms among middle-aged women based on walking and nonwalking. The participants of the study were 56,007 women aged 40-64 years. A complex sample statistical analysis was conducted. Notably, 48.9% of middle-aged women were in the walking group and 51.1% were in the nonwalking. In the nonwalking group, relative to the walking group, more people had high school diploma as their highest level of education, and were 40-49 years old, unemployed, and public assistance recipients than in the walking group. In addition, in the nonwalking group, more people had sleeping durations of less than 7 hours, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms than in the walking group. Factors influencing depressive symptoms were identified as less than 7 hours of sleeping duration and high perceived stress in both the walking and nonwalking groups, and the degree of influence was higher in the walking group than in the non-walking group, suggesting than further studies are needed to identify the cause. The results confirmed that perceived stress and depressive symptoms in middle-aged women could be reduced by walking. Therefore, if middle-aged women continue to engage in walking practices appropriate for them, it will enhance their walking rate, reduce stress, and improve their depressive symptoms.
Purpose: This study aimed to compare self-care behaviors and depressive symptoms between the young old (65-74 yr) and the old-old (75-84 yr) in low-income women with hypertension. Methods: This study used a descriptive research design. The subjects of this study were 136 elderly women over 65 yr living in D city. Data was collected from September to December 2007 through personal interviews using a questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS WIN 12.0 Program. Results: Self-care behaviors, functional status, and number of medications showed a significant difference between young elderly and middle elderly. There was a negative correlation between self-care behaviors and depressive symptoms. 52.2% of variance in self-care behaviors of young elderly and 76.8% of variance in self-care behaviors of middle elderly were explained by depressive symptoms, number of medications, and functional status. Conclusion: It is necessary to manage depressive symptoms to improve the self-care behaviors of low-income elderly with hypertension. Depressive symptoms need to be considered in planning hypertension programs for low-income elderly women.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between HbA1C, self-care behavior, and quality of life among depressed and non-depressed patients with type II diabetes Methods: Data were collected between May 26 and July 5, 2011 using a questionnaire. The questionnaire included depression (CES-D), self-care behavior and quality of life. Hemoglobin A1C was ed from medical records. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$-test, ANCOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: In this study sample (n=301), 20.9% of diabetic patients (n=69) were depressed. After adjustment for relevant covariates, depressed patients showed to have lower self-care behavior (2.8 vs 3.4, p<.001) and quality of life (2.8 vs 3.5, p<.001) scores, but the difference in HbA1C was no longer significant. Conclusion: This study suggests that the assessment and intervention for depressed diabetic patients can result in effective self-care behavior, which accordingly leads to improvement of the quality of life.
Purpose: This study was to identify the effects of self-foot reflexology on the situation score of Urinary incontinence, Self esteem and Depression of the middle-aged women. Method: A quasi-experimental design was used. The subject were 39 middle-aged women with urinary incontinence(18 experimental group, 21 control group). In the experimental group, self-foot reflexology was applied for 30 minutes, three times a week for 4 weeks. The obtained data were analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney U test of SPSS. Result: 1. The situation score of urinary incontinence were reduced significantly in the experimental group as compared to the control group(U=81.00, P=.002). 2. Self esteem were improved significantly in the experimental group as compared to the control group(U=59.00, p=.000). 3. Depression in the experimental group was reduced whereas that of the control group was increased significantly(U=45.00, p=.000). Conclusion: These findings indicate that self-foot reflexology is an effective method for reducing urinary incontinence and depression, and improving self esteem of middle-aged women. Therefore self-foot reflexology can be considered as a independent nursing intervention for urinary incontinence.
