Antioxidant Activity and Functional Component Analysis of Korean Mountain Ginseng's Different Sections (장뇌삼 부위별 기능성 성분분석과 항산화활성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate antioxidant activity and functional component analysis in different sections of Korean mountain ginseng (seed, leaf, stem and root). The major free amino acids were arginine, proline, $\gamma-amino-n-butyric$ acid, alanine and aspartic acid, and proline showed the highest content 22.98 mg/g in 80% MeOH extract of seed. Contents of $\gamma-amino-n-butyric$ acid and alanine were the highest in 80% MeOH extract of leaf, with 26.04 mg/g and 13.07 mg/g. Aspartic acid showed the highest content 23.42 mg/g in 80% MeOH extract of leaf. The major fatty acids were identified as palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid by GC. Content of total phenolic compounds were 737 mg% in 80% EtOH extract of seed, and 560 mg% in 80% MeOH extract of seed. The highest contents of ferulic acid and salicylic acid were $875{\mu}g/g\;and\;78{\mu}g/g$ in 80% MeOH extract of leaf, and $\rho-coumaric$ acid was $181{\mu}g/g$ in 80% MeOH extract of stem, respectively. The highest contents of ginsenoside-Rg1, Re, Rd and Rc were $14.5{\mu}g/g,\;48.78{\mu}g/g,\;27.57{\mu}g/g\;and\;4.87{\mu}g/g$ in 80% MeOH extract of leaf, respectively. Antioxidant activities by DPPH were 83.82% in water extract of leaf, 89.74% in 80% EtOH extract of leaf and 88.37% in 80% MeOH extract of leaf, and 92.81% in BHA (200 ppm). These results suggest that Korean mountain ginseng is very important as functional food material.

Antioxidative and Anticancer Activities of Water Extracts from Different Parts of Taraxacum coreanum Nakai Cultivated in Korea (국내 재배 흰민들레 부위별 열수 추출물의 항산화 및 항암 활성)

  • Taraxacum coreanum Nakai is a wild medicinal plant commonly consumed in Korea due to its health beneficial effects. In the present study, the contents of polyphenolics and flavonoids as well as antioxidative and anticancer activities of water extracts from different parts of T. coreanum Nakai were investigated for their use as functional foods. Extract yields of flower, leaf, and root were 30.25%, 34.53%, and 66.25%, respectively. Total polyphenols and total flavonoids contents of flower extract were 50.54 mg/g and 35.26 mg/g, respectively, which were much higher than any other parts. The electron donating abilities of flower, leaf, and root extracts were 91.04%, 88.22%, and 38.58%, respectively, at a concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. Cell viability of AGS for human gastric carcinoma, HCT-116 for human colon carcinoma, and A-549 for human pulmonary carcinoma showed the lowest values in flower extracts (40.34%, 39.56%, and 17.52%, respectively), indicating the highest cytotoxicity at a concentration of 400 mg/kg. Both antioxidative and anticancer activities of water extracts from all T. coreanum Nakai parts dose-dependently increased. These results provide preliminary data for the development of T. coreanum Nakai as an edible functional food material.

Comparison or Antioxidative Activities or Crotaiarta sessiflora L. Extracts from Leaves, Seed, Stem and Root (활나물 부위별 추출물의 항산화 활성 비교)

  • This study was carried to develop the new functional food material by exploring natural antioxidant substances of Crotalaria sessiflora L. We compared antioxidative activity of potential antioxidant substances extracted from Crotalaria sessiflora L. The order of extract yield of Crotalaria sessiflora L. were stem > loaves > seed > root. Antioxidative activities of Crotalaria sessiflora L. were measured by total polyphenol contents EDA (electron donating activity), SOD (superoxide dismutase) -like activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging ability and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging ability. Total polyphenol acid content was much higher in leaves Ex than other extracts. And leaves Ex showed the most excellent antioxidative activity ($86.27\%$) in terms of SOD-like activity. The EDA was ordered loaves Ex > stem Ex > seed Ex > root Ex. Hydroxy radical scavenging ability was the most effective in loaves Ex, and hydorogen Peroxide radical scavenging ability was the highest in seed Ex. Therefore we could be certain that leaves Ex was the most effective in antioxidative activity from Crotalaria sessiflora L.

Saponin Contents of Root and Aerial Parts in Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolium (고려인삼과 미국삼의 부위별 Saponin 함량)

  • In order to obtain the basic information for the development of ginseng varieties with high saponin contents. saponin contents and ginsenosides of Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng) and Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng) grown under the same environmental conditions were analysed. Crude saponin contents of root and aerial parts were more in Panax quinquefolium than in Panax ginseng, and aerial parts had more saponin contents in comparison with a root. Protopanaxatriol saponin was greatly more in the aerial parts of ginseng while more amount of protopanaxadiol saponins were detected in the root. As for the ginsenosides, the patterns of ginsenosides detected in total saponin of the aerial parts were not different between two species, Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolium, but the root ginsenoside patterns were quite different. Ginsenosides such as Rg$_2$, R$_{f}$. R$_{a}$ and R$_{o}$ were not detected in the root of Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng).).).).

Changes in Eleutherosides Contents of Acanthopanax koreanum by Harvest Time (탐라오갈피의 수확시기에 따른 Eleutherosides 함량의 변화)

  • Changes in eleutherosides by havest time and part of Acanthopanax koreanum Nakai were investigated. Eleutherosides contents in stem root and leaf of Acanthopanax koreanum harvested at September were 549.2 ppm 483.2 ppm and 255.9 ppm, respectively. Eleutheroside E content in stem was 653.1 ppm, which was higher than that in root, but it was not detected in leaf. As the trees were grown eleutheroside B and eleutheroside E contents were increased gradually. Eleutheroside B content of 5 year's age tree was 567.3 ppm, which was 1.6 times higher than that of 1 year's age tree.

Antioxidative Effects of Extracts from Different Parts of Epimedium koreanum Nakai (삼지구엽초의 부위별 추출물에 따른 항산화 활성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant activities of 70% ethanol extracts from different parts (root, stem, and leaf) of Epimedium koreanum Nakai. Ethanol extracts from the three parts of Epimedium koreanum Nakai were assessed for total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, myoglobin protective ratio, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Root part showed the highest total phenolic content ($2.468{\pm}0.017mg$ chlorogenic acid equivalent/g) and total flavonoid content ($2.071{\pm}0.002mg$ quercetin equivalent/g). Leaf part showed the strongest radical scavenging activities (DPPH radical; 80%, myoglobin protective ratio; 90% and FRAP; 98.7% at 20 mg/mL). Root part showed the highest ABTS radical scavenging at 1 mg/mL. Therefore, the results of the antioxidant activity test were correlated with total phenolic and flavonoid content values. Thus, Epimedium koreanum Nakai has great potential as a natural source for human health.

Antioxidative Activity of Ethanol Extracts from Different Parts of Taraxacum officinale (민들레의 부위별 에탄올 추출물의 항산화 활성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate antioxidative and physiological activities of ethanol extracts from different parts (flower, leaf, root, and the whole plant) of Taraxacum officinale. The ethanol extracts from different parts were measured to examine total flavonoids content, total polyphenol content, elect ron donating ability,superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, nitrite-scavenging ability and tyrosinase inhibition effects. Total flavonoids content in leaf extract (41.66 mg/g) and total polyphenol content in flower extract (71.91 mg/g) were higher than those of other parts. All assays were conducted at concentrations of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1 mg/mL ethanol extracts. The electron donating abilities of leaf, flower, the whole plant, and root extracts were 92.25%, 88.18%, 84.55% and 83.40%, respectively, at a concentration of 1 mg/mL. The activities were concentration dependent. The SOD-like activity of ethanol extracts from different parts was 8.40~11.20% at a concentration of 1 mg/mL. The nitrite-scavenging abilities of flower and leaf extracts measured at pH 1.2 were 47.37% and 47.18%, respectively, at a concentration of 1 mg/mL, which were higher than those of the whole plant and root extracts. Tyrosinase inhibition activity of the leaf extract at a concentration of 1 mg/mL was the highest (34.22%) and that of the whole plant and root extracts was shown to be more than 20%. These results suggest that ethanol extracts from different parts of Taraxacum officinale could be used as antioxidative functional food sources.

Analysis of the Various Constituents and Comparison of Biological Activities of Different Parts of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum (산마늘의 부위별 성분분석 및 생리활성 평가)

  • Analysis of the various constituents and determination of biological activities in the different parts (root, stem, and leaf) of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum were carried out. Potassium and calcium were detected in higher contents (mg/100 g fresh wt.) than other minerals. The total phenolic content (mg tannic acid eq./100 g dry wt.) decreased in the order of leaves ($792.7{\pm}16.6$) > stems ($160.3{\pm}6.8$) > roots ($101.5{\pm}2.7$), and the total flavonoid content (mg quercetin eq./100 g dry wt.) was as follows: leaves ($497.9{\pm}11.1$), roots ($35.7{\pm}0.4$), stems ($18.5{\pm}1.4$). DPPH radical-scavenging activity and inhibition activity against the formation of cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide in rat blood plasma was higher in the leaves than in roots and stems. Extracts of A. victorialis separated by parts displayed antimicrobial activity against Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, of which the strongest activity was against C. perfringens.

Screening of Natural Plant Resources with Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition and Antioxidant Activity (천연 식물자원으로부터 Acetylcholinesterase 저해 및 항산화 활성 탐색)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of natural plant extracts on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and the free radical scavenging activity. The methanolic extracts of plants were tested for AChE inhibitory activity using Ellman's colorimetric method in 96-welled microplates and antioxidant activity as the scavenging effect of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH). The results showed that AChE activities were inhibited (about 20-30%) in whole plant extract of Daucus carota var. sativa, Hypericum erectum and Fragaria yezoensis. AChE activities were inhibited (about 32-34%) in stems extract of Gingko biloba and leaves extract of Rhododendrondron yedoensa var. poukhanense. Fruit extract of Zanthoxylum schinifolium inhibited (about 18%) AChE activity. And the DPPH scavenging effects as antioxidant activity were similar to L-ascorbic acid in whole plant extract of Fragaria yezoensis and fruits extract of Comus officinalis.

  • The Spatial distribution pattems of the oriental tobacco budworm (OTB), Helicoverpa assuita, eggs w were studied in red pepper and tobacco fields. With a plant as a sample Unit. Taylor's power law analyses indicated that om egg spatial patterns were clumped in red pepper fields (a=1.3914, b = 1.1648) and were unifom in tobacco fields (a = 1.6035, b = 0.6880). In red peppers om eggs w were found in leaves (76.2%), fruits (16.8%), stems (6.5%), and flowers (0.4%).
