  • The aim of this paper is to prepare metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes by coating inorganic particles on a metallic hollow fiber filter. The diameter and the pore size of the filter was 2.0 mm and $2{\sim}8{\mu}m$. The metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes were obtained by a coating process of silica and titania sols on top of the metallic filter. For this purpose the method of fast freeze drying and dip-coating were used. It was found that the pore size of the membrane was about 50 nm from SEM and PMI characterization. The pore size was controlled by changing the size of the particles, sintering period and temperature.

  • In this study, adhesion and transport of bacteria in positively-charged media was investigated with batch and column experiments. Bacterial species used in this study was Escherichia coli ATCC 11105(length: 2.2 ${\mu}m$, diameter: 0.6 ${\mu}m$) and media used were quartz sand(particle size distribution: 0.5-2.0 mm, mean diameter: 1.0 mm) and iron-coated sand. Batch results indicate that bacterial adhesion increased as the content of iron-coated media increased. At iron-coated media 0%(quartz sand 100%), around 46% of bacteria was adhered to media while at iron-coated media 100%(quartz sand 0%) about 97% was attached. Column results also show that bacterial adhesion was enhanced with an increase of iron-coated media content. As the iron-coated media content increased from 0 to 100%, bacterial adhesion increased from 8 to 94%. The experimental results demonstrate that positively-charged media could influence transport of bacteria in porous media.

  • This study examined each handiwork method of 4 filigree artifacts from Neungsan-ri temple site in Buyeo, Korea through material characteristic and microstructure analysis. As a result, it was indicated that all of the artifacts have comparatively higher purity than 22.7K and some of filigree artifacts showed that gold is alloyed with silver at a certain ratio. Gold thread that decorates surface showed thickness of 0.2~0.8mm and displayed various forms of section. Gold granule indicated that 2 or 3 granules are adhered together and they are 0.3~0.8mm in diameter. Trace of soldering was observed from gold thread and gold granule joints on surface and it confirmed a possibility of being soldering using gold solder through componential analysis. Also, it reveals a surface decorated with pigments such as cinnabar(HgS) and black.

  • Characteristics of size, rising velocity and distribution of liquid drops have been investigated in a immiscible liquid-liquid fluidized-bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.5 m in height. Effects of velocities of dispersed (0~0.04 m/s) and continuous (0.02~0.14 m/s) liquid phases and fluidized particle size (1, 2.1, 3 or 6 mm) on the liquid drop properties in the extractor have been determined. The resultant flow behavior of liquid drops became more complicated with increasing the velocity of dispersed or continuous liquid phase. The resultant flow behavior of liquid complicated with increasing the velocity of dispersed or continuous liquid phase. The resultant flow behavior of liquid drops depended strongly upon the drop size and its distribution. The drop size increased with increasing dispersed phase velocity, but decreased with increasing particle size. However, the size of liquid drop exhibited a local maximum with increasing continuous liquid velocity. The size and rising velocity of liquid drops have been well correlated in terms of operating parameters.

  • This study was conducted in a commercial plug glasshouse in Sacheon to examine the possibility of producing tomato plug seedlings using various growing media containing cellular glass foam (CGF)and carbonized chestnut woodchips (CCW) as medium components. Plug seedlings of 'Seogun' tomato were grown in media containing 50% CCW+50% peatmoss, 33% CGF+67% peatmoss, and 50% peatmoss+50% granular rockwool. A commercial plug medium (Tosilee) was used as the control. All seeds were sown in 200 cell plug trays on November 28, 2001. Seedling growth was measured at 31 days after sowing. Each treatment showed a similar growth result as compared to the control. Plant height, root grade, fresh weight, and air space and bulk density of the medium were significantly greater in the 33% CGF+67% peatmoss treatment than those in the other media. However, growth was slightly suppressed in the 50% CCW+50% peatmoss. pH and EC of the media were the highest in the control treatment, although no toxicity symptoms had been observed. The results suggest that perlite can be replaced with a new material such as CGF in the commercial scale production of plug seedlings of 'Seogun' tomato.

  • The purpose in having a control rod on a buoy system is to control the motion of it. The system may be composed entirely of a single circular cylinder and a long mooring anchor cable. A control rod has one function to perform in meeting its purpose, and that is to develop a control force in consequence of its orientation and movement relative to the water. The forces and moments generated as a result of the effects of mutual interference. then determine the stability characteristics of the body. In this paper, the study of control-rod-attached buoy's 2-dimensional section was accomplished. model tests and numerical simulations had been carried out with different diameters of control rods. and varying the Reynolds number $Re=5,000{\sim}25,000$ based on the cylinder diameter(D=50mm) to predict the performance of the body and the 2 frame particle tracking method Iud been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field. 50mm circular cylinder Iud been used during the whole experiments and measured results had been compared with each other.

  • Axial and radial distributions of bubble holdup were investigated in a slurry bubble column with pilot plant scale(D=1.0 m). Effects of gas velocity, surface tension of continuous liquid medium and solid fraction in the slurry phase on the axial and radial distributions of bubble holdup were examined. The bubble holdup decreased with increasing radial dimensionless distance from the center of the column, while it increased with increasing dimensionless distance in the axial direction from the distributor, in all the cases studied. The radial non-uniformity of bubble holdup increased with increasing gas velocity but decreasing surface tension of liquid medium, while it was not dependent upon the solid fraction in the slurry phase. The axial non-uniformity of bubble holdup increased with increasing gas velocity, but it does not change considerably with variations of liquid surface tension or solid fraction in the slurry phase . The axial and radial distributions of bubble holdup were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions.

  • The materials generating from volcanic eruption are volcanic gases, lavas and pyroclastic materials. Volcanic ash which has small-grain size (< 2 mm in diameter) can be moved easily and disperse widely, thus it may affect to communities across hundreds of square kilometers. The impacts from volcanic ash fall on people, structures, equipments, plants and livestock largely depend on ash thickness. According to increasing ash thickness, the intensity and area of damage may increase and affect significant damages not to human health but also to infrastructures. To reduce the impacts from volcanic ash fall, we have to establish the guidances about the nature and extent of the hazard and prepare the actions to increase abilities of communities to manage hazard. Although we don't have any experience caused by volcanic ash fall during and after volcanic eruption, we need to prepare the impacts of volcanic ash fall for future eruption in the areas surrounding Korea.

  • Experimental measurements of flames and the product properties were performed for small kerosene pool fires. which is widely used as a fire source of laboratory scale experiments with scaling modeling. The flame length and flickering frequency were investigated for the flame structures, and compared with the theory. Three measurement methods were introduced to clarify the smoke characteristics, i.e. various gas concentrations, smoke density and thermophoretic sampling with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The yield of carbon dioxide and the consumption of oxygen were proportional to the heat release rate of pool fires, but there is no trend on carbon monoxide emission. Smoke density of turbulent flames was exponentially increased with the heat release rate. The morphology of the soot particle was investigated to address the degree of soot maturing. The results show that the similar smoke morphology between an inverse jet flame and a pool fire exists despite of different combustion controlling mechanisms.

  • Adsorption characteristics of Eosin Y dye by carbon nano tubes (CNTs) were examined through batch experiments. CNTs used in the study had specific surface area of $106.9m^2/g$, porosity volume of $1.806cm^3/g$, and porosity diameter of $163.2{\AA}$, respectively. Adsorption experiments were carried out as function of contact time, initial solution pH (2~10), dye concentration (100, 150 and 200 mg/L), adsorbent dose (0.05~1.0 g) and temperature (293, 313 and 333 K). The adsorption was favoured at lower pHs and temperatures. Adsorption data were well described by the Langmuir model. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity decreased with increase in temperature. The results of the intraparticle diffusion model suggested that film diffusion and particle diffusion were simultaneously occured during the adsorption process. Thermodynamic studies suggested the spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption of Eosin Y dye onto CNTs.
