Particle path and performance evaluation of differential mobility analyzer (Differential Mobility Analyzer(DMA)내의 입자운동 및 특성 분석)

  • Particle paths and flow fields in a prototype differential mobility analyzer (DMA) were numerically analyzed solving Navier-Stokes equation, electric field equation and particle motion considering viscous drag force, Coulomb force and polarization force. Analytically predicted particle diameters for the prototype DMA are in good agreement with the measured particle diameters within $\pm$1%. And the analytically predicted particle diameters are also in good agreement with numerical results for the prototype DMA.

  • 2011년 동일본 지역에서 발생한 지진으로 인하여 후쿠시마 다이이치에 위치한 원자력 발전소에서 다양한 방사성 물질들이 바다, 하천 그리고 대기와 같은 자연환경 속으로 유출되었다. 방사성 세슘(Cesuim, $Cs^{137}$)은 다양한 방사성 물질들 가운데 반감기(Half-life)가 30.17년으로 가장 긴 물질이다. 방사성 세슘이 환경 생태계로 한번 유출될 경우 긴 반감기과 널리 퍼지는 성질로 인하여 오랜 시간동안 넓은 지역에 막심한 피해를 초래하므로 효과적인 처리방법을 통해 안전하게 처리하는 것이 아주 중요하다. 세슘을 제거하기 위하여 물리적, 화학적, 생물학적 등 다양한 방법들을 통해 연구를 진행하고 있으며, 특히 세슘을 제거하는 아주 효과적인 방법 중 하나인 프러시안 블루(Prussian Blue, PB) 흡착제를 적용하는 방법이 많이 주목받고 있다. 그러나 프러시안 블루는 미세한 분말입자로서 수처리에 사용하게 되면 처리 후 발생되는 슬러지들을 수중으로 부터 분리하기 어려운 한계점을 가지고 있다. 최근 연구에서는 프러시안 블루의 적용 한계점를 극복하기 위하여 자성체(Magnetic substance)를 물리적 지지체로 이용하여 외부 자기장을 통해 수중으로 분리하는 방법들이 연구되고 있다. 자성체란 외부 자기장이 주어지게 되면 입자들 표면에 자성력을 띄는 물질들을 말한다. 본 연구에서는 자성체 종류들 가운데 가장 높은 자성력을 지닌 강자성체(Ferromagnetic Substance)를 물리적 지지체로 하여 산화과정, 실란과정, 합성과정을 거쳐 강자성체 입자의 표면에 프러시안 블루를 합성한 새로운 형태에 합성체를 제조하고, 제조된 합성체를 이용하여 수중에 존재하는 세슘 제거 능력을 평가하였다. 제조된 합성체의 물리적 특성을 분석하기 위하여 SEM, XRD를 이용하여 합성체 입자의 표면 분석을 진행하였다. 합성체의 세슘 제거 능력을 평가하기 위하여 임의 제조된 0.5mg/L의 세슘 농도를 가진 원수 100ml에 제조된 새로운 형태의 합성체 1g을 투입한 뒤 1분간의 반응시간 동안 반응한 이후 잔류 세슘을 측정한 결과 수중의 존재하는 세슘에 대해 99.9%의 세슘 제거율을 기록하였다. 자가분리(Magnetic Seperate)의 원리를 이용하여 수중으로부터 회수율을 측정한 결과, 99%의 합성체 회수율을 얻었다. 실험결과를 통해 외부자기장이 주어지게 되면 수중으로부터 합성체를 대부분 분리하여 회수할 수 있다고 판단된다. 본 연구를 통해 개발된 새로운 형태의 합성체는 수중의 세슘 처리 공정에서 사용자가 직접 접촉하지 않고 세슘제거 및 외부자기장을 통해 수중으로부터 분리가 가능한 합성체라고 판단된다.

  • Separation membranes used in water filtration, protein purification or biomedical filtration device frequently undergo membrane fouling for several reasons. The formation of biofilm on the membrane surface by bacteria causes a severe problem for durability of the membrane. For the protein separation, the membrane pores get blocked due to surface hydrophobicity of the membrane. There are several approaches controlling the membrane fouling and one of them is the incorporation of silver nanoparticles. Antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles are well known and thus widely used in several applications. In this review, we have focused on the membranes where silver nanoparticles or its derivatives are either incorporated in the active layer of thin film composite membranes or uniformly distributed throughout the whole membranes.

Feasibility of Present Soil Remediation Technologies in KOREA for the Control of Contaminated Marine Sediment: Heavy Metals (우리나라 현존 토양정화 기술의 해양오염퇴적물 정화사업 적용 가능성 검토: 중금속)

  • Soil remediation technologies were experimented to evaluate whether the technologies could be used to apply remediation of contaminated marine sediment. In this research, marine sediments were sampled at "Ulsan" and "Jinhae" where remediation projects are considered, and then the possibility of heavy metal removal was evaluated throughout the technologies. Heavy metal concentration of silt and clay fraction was higher than that of sand fraction at "Ulsan". Heavy metal removal of the silt and clay fraction was arsenic (As) 81.5%, mercury (Hg) 93.8% by particle separation, cadmium (Cd) 72.2%, mercury (Hg) 93.8% by soil washing technology, cadmium (Cd) 70.8%, lead (Pb) 65.6% by another soil washing technology. Based on experimental results, tested particle separation and soil washing technologies could be used to remove heavy metals of sand fraction and silt and clay fraction. Heavy metal removal by soil washing technology which was composed of separation, washing and physical or chemical reaction by additives such as acid, organic solvents was more effective comparing to that of particle separation. Since heavy metal concentration of all treated samples was suitable for national soil standards, all the tested technologies were could be used not only to remove heavy metals of marine contaminated sediment but also to reuse treated samples in land.

  • 관성임팩터(inertial impactor)는 입자의 관성을 이용하여 기류로부터 입자를 분리하는 장치이며 입자를 입경별로 포집하는데에 높은 효율을 가지며 작동하기에 간편하므로 널리 사용되고 있다. 하지만, 임팩터는 입자의 되튀김(bouncing), 재유입(reentrainment), 그리고 과적(overload)과 같은 입자와 충돌판의 상호작용에 의한 문제점이 있다. 일반적으로 이런 문제점을 해결하기 위해서는 충돌판의 표면에 그리스(grease) 또는 오일(oil)을 코팅하여 사용하는 방법이 있다. (중략)

Investigation of Membrane Fouling in Microfiltration by Characterization of Flocculent Aggregates (응집플록의 특성분석을 통하여 관찰된 정밀여과 막오염 현상에 관한 연구)

  • Characteristics of flocculent aggregates have great effects on membrane fouling. Floc from kaolin particles gave higher permeate throughputs than floc from natural particles at the same conditions. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to thoroughly analyze characteristics of flocculated aggregates and to investigate effects of flocculated aggregates on membrane fouling. Image analysis, specific rake resistance and cake compressibility were used for characterization of flocs. Different flocculent aggregates formed with natural and kaolin particles were employed in this study. The fractal dimensions from the image analysis were $D_2=1.79{\pm}0.07$ for floc from natural particles and $D_2=1.84{\pm}0.06$ for floc from kaolin particles. The lower fractal dimension($D_2$) of floc from natural particles indicated that the aggregates were more porous and less compact than floe from kaolin particles. In addition, both the specific cake resistances and compressible degrees of flocs from natural particles showed greater values than those of flocs from kaolin particles. The results implied that the porous and loose flocs from natural particles were more easily compressed on membrane surface than the dense and compact flocs from kaolin particles. The compressed flocs yielded the great hydraulic resistances by hindering the water flow through the cake layer.

A Study on the Collection and Analysis of Tire and Road Wear Particles(TRWPs) as Fine Dust Generated on the Roadside (도로변에서 발생되는 미세먼지로써 타이어와 도로 마모입자 채집과 분석 연구)

  • Recently, various stakeholder are interested in microplastic to cause pollution of the marine's ecosystem and effort to conduct study of product's life cycle to reduce pollution of marine's ecosystem. The micorplastic refer to materials of the nano- to micro- sized units and it can be classified into primary and secondary. The primary microplastic mean the manufactured for use in the specific field such as the microbead of the cosmetic or cleanser. also, secondary mean the unintentionally generated during use of the product such as the textile crumb by the doing the laundry. Tire and Road Wear Particles(TRWPs) are also defined as secondary microplastic. Typically, TRWPs are created by friction between the tread compound's rubber of the tire and the surface of the road du ring the driving cars. Most of the generated TRWPs exist on the roadside and some of them were carried to marine by the rainwater. In this study, we perform the quantitative analysis of the TRWPs existed in fine dust at the roadside. So, we collected the dust from the roadside in Chungcheongnam-do's C site with a movement of 1,300 cars per the hour. The collected samples were separated according to size and density. And shape analysis was performed using the Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). We were possible to discover a lot of TRWPs at the fine dust of the 100 ± 20 ㎛. And we analysis it u sing the Thermo Gravimetric Analysis(TGA) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer(GC/MS) for the quantitative components from the tire. As a result, it was confirmed that TRWPs generated from the roadside fine dust were included the 0.21 %, and the tire and road components in the generated TRWPs consisted of the 3:7 ratio.

  • A new method of oil separation from oil-contaminated seawater based on electromagnetic forces, so-called MHD method was designed and formulated. MHD method has advantages of easy treatment of separated oil as well as little effect upon the environment, comparing with a conventional separation method using magnetic powders. Assuming high polymer particles instead of oil, the separation ratio (the mass of simulation particles / the total mass of simulation particles) for the sample fluid was calculated as fuction of electric current, magnetic field and seawater velocity.
