  • The laser-induced plasma affects greatly on the results of welding process. moreover selective evaporation loss of alloying elements leads to change in chemical composition of weld metal as well as the mechanical properties of welded joint. this study was undertaken to obtain a fundamental knowledge of pulsed laser welding phenomena especially evaporation mechanism of different aluminum alloys. The intensities of molecular spectra of AlO and MgO were different each other depeding on the power density of a laser beam Under the low power density condition the MgO band spectrum was predominant in intensity while the AlO spectra became much stronger with an increase in the power density. These behaviors have been attributed to the difference in evaporation phenomena of Al and Mg metals with different boiling points and latent heats of vaporization. The time-averaged plasma temperature and electron number density were determined by spectroscopic methods and consequently the obtained temperature was $3,280{\pm}150K$ and the electron number density was $1.85{\times}10^{19}\;l/m^3$.

  • In this investigation, conductivity of conductive inks was measured. A particular attention has been given to the effect of metal powders with various conductivity on the overall conductivity of the bulk ink. The conductivity of various solutions simulating conductive inks consisting of copper and silver was measured and the results have been discussed in relation to various applications of conductive inks in practice. A conductivity model simulating systems consisting of various materials has been introduced and the results were discussed. Materials of good conductivity are adversely affected by mixing with materials of poor conductivity simply through serial connection. However, parallel connection has rather little effect on the overall conductivity. The practical implication of various mixtures of materials on conductive inks has been discussed.

  • Metal hydride used as hydrogen storage material usually needs the activating process to store the hydrogen at high temperature or high pressure. In general as the particle size of metal hydride becomes smaller, approached to the micro, furthermore, nano scale, storage ability and reaction kinetics are reported to be increased, because the specific surface is extremely increased. But the experimental results demonstrated that the optimum particle size is existed for the best absorbing performance, opposite to the usual expectation. This results from the particles to be come amorphous with their approaching to micro and nano scale, in the storage site within the metal hydride lattice is decreased, which is proved by XRD and SEM.

  • It has been known that the grain refinement of Cu base alloys greatly improved mechanical properties, castability, workability and hot shortness resistance etc. In this study CuZr50, CuP7, CuFe7, CuMg10 binary alloys were added as grain refiners in CuZn36 alloy. The alloys melted in vacuum and controlled in mixed gas conditions and casted at $1050^{\circ}C$. Zr-P-X compound has significantly grain refined but oxygen has been found detrimental to grain refinement. In the case of Zr /B ratio below 4, B acted as grain growth element in this alloy.

  • This paper is concerned with the drawing process of $Al-1\%Si$ bonding wire. In this study, the finite-element model established in previous work was used to analyze the effect of various forming parameters, which included the reduction in area, the semi-die angle, the aspect ratio, the inter-particle spacing and orientation angle of the fine Si particle in drawing processes. The finite-element results gave the consolidation condition. From the results of analysis, the effects of each forming parameter were determined. It is possible to obtain the Important basic data which can be guaranteed in the fracture prevention of $Al-1\%Si$ wire by using FE-Simulation.

  • In order to understand the high temperature deformation behavior of superalloy 718, a rotating grade 718 alloy has been compression tested to about 0.7 upset ratio at $927{\sim}1066^{\circ}C$ temperature range and $5{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}5{\times}10^0sec^{-1}$ strain rate. The maximum flow stress was increased with increasing strain rate, and similar behavior was observed with decreasing temperature. At low temperature and high strain rates other than $5{\times}10^{-1}sec^{-1}$, strain softening was occurred mainly by dynamic recovery and deformation twinning processes, while at high temperature and low strain rates strain softening was offseted by dynamic recrystallization. At $5{\times}10^{-1}sec^{-1}$, strain hardening was occurred due to work hardening of the dynamic recrystallized grains. Strain rate sensitivity, m, was varied with strain rates. In the case of lower strain rate tests, m was measured as 0.3 and it was observed that the deformation was mainly controlled by dynamic recrystallization. At higher strain rate, m was lowered to 0.1 and the deformation was controlled by the dynamic recovery and the deformation twinning processes.

  • Oxidation of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal and its effect on the coercivity of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ crystal particles were investigated. Oxidation kinetics of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal was investigated using an excessively grown $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains in the $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy ingot. Oxidation of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal occurred by dissociation of the phase into multi-phase mixture of ${\alpha}$-Fe, $Fe_3B$, and Nd oxides. Oxidation rate of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal showed no dependence on the crystallographic direction. The oxidation reaction was modeled according to simple linear relationship. Activation energy for the oxidation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ compound crystal was calculated to be approximately 26.8 kJ/mol. Fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ crystal particles in near single domain size was prepared by ball milling of the HDDR-treated $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy, and these particles were used for investigating the effect of oxidation on the coercvity. The near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ crystal particles (${\fallingdotseq}0.3\;{\mu}m$) had high coercivity over 9 kOe. However, the coercivity was radically reduced as the temperature increased in air (<2 kOe at $200^{\circ}C$). This radical coercivity reduction was attributed to the soft magnetic phases, ${\alpha}$-Fe and $Fe_3B$, which were formed on the surface of the fine particles due to the oxidation.

  • Synthesis of ferromagnetic composite materials for the $Cu-BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ system by mechanical alloying (MA) has been investigated at room temperature. A mixture of copper and barium ferrite with a weight ratio of $Cu:BaFe_{12}O_{19}=4:1$, 3 : 2, 2 : 3 and 1 : 4 was used. It is found that $Cu-BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ composite powders in which $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ is dispersed in copper matrix are successfully produced by mechanical alloying of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ with Cu for 80 min. in all composition. The change in X-ray diffraction patterns and magnetic properties reflects the details for the formation of ferromagnetic metal matrix composite of pure Cu and $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ during mechanical alloying. Magnetization of $Cu-BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ composite powders gradually increases with increasing the amounts of barium ferrite, whereas coercive force of MA powders gradually decreases due to the refinement of barium ferrite powders with ball milling. However, it can be seen that the coercivity of $Cu-BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ MA composite powders with a weight ratio of $Cu:BaFe_{12}O_{19}=4:1$ and 3 : 2 ball-milled for 80 min. is still high value of 1400 Oe and 1450 Oe, respectively suggesting that the refinement of barium ferrite powders during ball milling process tend to be suppressed due to the ductile copper.

  • In this study, high velocity impact tests along with modeling of material behavior and numerical analyses were conducted to predict the dispersion behavior of the debris resulting from a high velocity impact fracture. For the impact tests, two different materials were employed for both the projectile and the target plate - the first setup employed aluminum alloy while the second employed steel. The projectile impacts the target plate with a velocity of approximately 1 km/s were enforced to generate the impact damages in the aluminum witness plate through the fracture debris. It was confirmed that, depending on the material employed, the debris dispersion behavior as well as the dispersion radii on the witness plate varied. A numerical analysis was conducted for the same impact test conditions. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH)-finite element (FE) coupled technique was then applied to model the fracture and damage upon the debris. The experimental and numerical results for the diameters of the perforation holes in the target plate and the debris dispersion radii on the witness plate were in agreement within a 5% error. In addition, the impact test using steel was found to be more threatening as proven by the larger debris dispersion radius.
