  • Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is defined as the motion of suspended particles in solvent resulting from polarization forces induced by an inhomogeneous electric field. DEP has been utilized for various biological applications such as trapping, sorting, separation of cells, viruses, nanoparticles. However, the analysis of DEP trapping has mostly employed the period-averaged ponderomotive forces while the dynamic features of DEP trapping have not been attracted because the target object is relatively large. Such approach is not appropriate for the nanoscale analysis in which the size of object is considerably small. In this study, we thoroughly investigate the dynamic response of trapping to various system parameters and its influence on the trapping stability. The effects of particle conductivity on its motion are also focused.

  • We analyze voltage characteristics of charged particle type display according to particle layers and cell gap between two electrodes and ascertain the aging effects by measuring the response time of particles with and without aging process. The threshold/driving/breakdown voltage is proportional to layers of charged particles and cell gap and the response time at driving voltage is faster than that of threshold and breakdown voltage because of different q/m of color and black particles. The analysis of response time is a method of estimation of optical characteristics, driving voltage and particle lumping and these results are promoted by aging process. We use the laser and photodiode to measure response time and optical properties. It has not been studied and reported to analyze the relationship of response time, threshold/driving/breakdown voltage, lumping phenomena, cell gap, and aging process for charged particle type display.

  • In an agitated bead reaction system, the enzymatic saccharification of uncooked starch was substantially enhanced. The enhancement mechanism was investigated front the view of the structural aspect of starch. The mechanical impact caused by the movement of the attrition-milling media resulted neither the destruction of microcrystalline structure nor the fragmentation of starch granule. instead, the most distinct phenomenon was the swelling of starch granule up to about 2.5 times, and the swelling mechanism was not similar with that caused by cooking. However, in the case of the enzyme addition in the attrition coupled reaction system, the swollen starch was easily fragmented into the large number of small particles by the synergistic action of the enzyme and milling-media. The exposed surface area of the fragmented particles plays the major role in enhancing the saccharification. The saccharification rate was quite different depending on the source of starch, the reason was discussed in terms of the granular structure of uncooked starches.

  • Three-dimensional finite-difference simulation in a small-scale half-sphere basin with planar free-surface is performed for an arbitrary shear-dislocation point source. A new scheme to deal with free-surface boundary condition is presented. Then basin parameters are examined to understand main characteristics on ground-motion response in the basin. To analyze the frequency content of ground motion in the basin, spectral amplitudes are compared with each other for four sites inside and outside the basin. Also particle motions for those sites are examined to find which kind of wave plays a dominant role in ground-motion response. The results show that seismic energy is concentrated on a marginal area of the basin far from the source. This focusing effect is mainly due to constructive interference of the direct Swave with basin-edge induced surface waves. Also, ground-motion amplification over the deepest part of the basin is relatively lower than that above shallow basin edge. In the small-scale basin with relatively simple bedrock interface, therefore, the ground-motion amplification may be more related to the source azimuth or direction of the incident waves into the basin rather than depth of it.

  • The particles velocity in the instantaneous flow field and velocity change of particles along the jet centerline for various particle diameter in a circular turbulent impingement jet are investigated by using particle image velocimetry(PIV) and an equation of particle motion simplified by terms of inertia forces, drag and gravitational force. The jet Reynolds number was 3300 and 8700, and glass beads of 30,58 and 100$\mu$m in diameter were used. The PIV results show that the direction and size of velocity depends not only on the number density of particle but also on the particle momentum. The results obtained form calculation suggest that the particle velocity near the first impingement region deviated from local air velocity, which accords well with the PIV results. The rebound height of particle increase with the particle diameter. In the second-impingement, particle velocities increased sluggishly with Re=3300 but particle velocities uniformed with Re=8700 in stagnation region.

  • As part of study on separated flow using the vortex particle method, stability of the method and particle redistribution were scrutinized. Stability was investigated by choosing different combination of numerical parameters. The Gaussian vortex was considered to make the problem simple by eliminating the complexity due to presence of walls. It was shown that the numerical method was stable when $v{\Delta}t/h^2{\leq}0.5$. In all the stable cases the circulation and the linear momentum were conserved. Without the particle redistribution, the angular momentum was severely attenuated.

  • This paper deals with interaction between two bubbles or particles and flow around them, visualized by a moving object flow image analyzer(MOFIA) consisting of a three-dimensional (3D) moving object image analyzer(MOIA) and two-dimensional particle image velocimetry(PIV). The experiments were carried out for rising bubbles or particles of various densities, sizes, and/or shapes in stagnant water in a vertical pipe. In the MOFIA employed, 3D-MOIA was used to measure particles or bubbles motion and PIV was used to measure fluid flow, The experimental results showed that the interaction was characterized by the shape, size and density of two particles or bubbles.

  • An analysis of radiative heat transfer has been conducted on axisymmetric finite cylindrical media. It is assumed that the temperature in the media is uniformly distributed and the boundaries are diffusely emitting and reflecting at a constant temperature. The scattering phase function is represented by the delta-Eddington approximation to account for highly forward scattering by particulates just as in the combustion system. Exact numerical solutions are obtained by Gaussian quadrature method and compared with P-1 and P-3 approximation solutions to verify their engineering application limit. The effects of optical thickness, scattering albedo, wall emissivity and aspect ratio are investigated. The results show that P-3 approximation is found to be in good agreement with the exact solution.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the penetration behavior of particulate matters by wave and tidal actions in sandy beach located in enclosed bay and to evaluate the effect of stranded oil on penetration of particulate matters. Experiments were rallied out using a model sandy beach facility. The particulate matters penetrated into saturated sediments by wave action from breaking wave run-up point with a semi-circular forming in low energy beach as enclosed bay. On the other hand, the penetration velocity of the particulate matters was to be faster according to the increase of slope and breaking wave height. The particulate matters by tidal action penetrated into the sediments at an angie of 45 degrees in the direction of porous water flow. The stranded oil completely blocked the penetration of the particulate matters into the sediments. These results indicate that the penetrated oil prevents the penetration of the particulate matters into the sediments and, therefore, results in the reduction in the supply of plankton, bacteria and organic detritus for the benthic organisms in the sandy beach.

  • The effect of a particle's spin is investigated numerically by taking into account the effect of lift forces originating due to difference between the rotations of a particle and of a fluid, such as the Saffman and Magnus lift forces. These lift forces have been ignored in many previous studies on particle-laden turbulence. The trajectory of the particles can be changed by the lift forces, resulting in a significant modification of the stochastic characteristics of heavy particles. Probability density functions and autocorrelations are evaluated from the velocity of solid particle, acceleration of solid particles, and acceleration of fluid at the position of solid particle. Changes in velocity statistics are negligible but statistics related with acceleration are affected by the rotation of particle. When a laden particle encounters coherent structures during its motion, the particle's rotation might significantly affects the motion due to intermittently large fluid acceleration near the coherent structures.
