  • In the food process, twist screen is widely used to divide particles on the basis of size. As screen equipped in the twist screen perfoms an important part in the particle size distribution mechanism, the contact area of screen and particles, retention time of particles on the screen, mesh and string thickness of screen and the flow pattern of particles on the screen are major points of the separation efficiency. To improve the separation efficiency, increase the retention time and control the flow pattern of particles, screen frame dam and spiral blockage are installed on the sieve of twist screen ${\emptyset}$ 1200 and ${\emptyset}$ 1500. Twist screen ${\emptyset}$ 1500 with frame dam treated similar separation capacity, 37% higher separation ratio and less non-separated particles of product output 1 than general twist screen. Twist screens with frame dam and spiral blockage showed less treatment capacity, three times higher division ratio and entire separation than general twist screen.

  • In the flotation system for deinking process, the ink partcles musl collidc with the air bubbles for adhesion The probability of bubble-particle collision is largely dependent on the hydrodynamic conditions The main reason for the very small ink particles not to be able to float easily may be tound in the hydrodynamic effects, which make small ink particlcs move following the slreamlines around the bubbles rather than achually collide with bubbles. Also. the low floatabdily of the large and heavy ink particles is due to the gravity force and viscous drag which affect uprising molinn of particles through the liquid. Therefore, it is vely important to control not only the surface chemical conditions but the hydrodynamic conditions in practical floialion system

  • The trajectories of PCB(Printed Circuit Board) particles in the corona discharge electrostatic separation was simulated. The PCB particles are prepared by crushing bare board, which disassembled from electronic components, consist mostly of copper and FR-4(Flame Retardant Level-4) Firstly, a model was established for calculating of detachment points of PCB particles from the rotating electrode in separator. The model of detachment points was derived from equilibrium of force such as gravity force, centrifugal force, electrostatic force. The trajectories of particles after detachment was calculated by acceleration derived from time-integrating method of motion equation. In this simulation, particle size, supplied voltage, rotation speed of rotating roll electrode and angle of induction electrode were adopted as variables. While the trajectories of FR-4 particles were affected by all variables, rotation speed of rotating roll electrode was dominant variables affecting trajectories of copper particles.

  • Silica is an essential material in the electronics industries of LCDs and OLEDs, which particularly require high purity. This study attempted to find the optimal design of a magnetic separator for silica sand containing iron compounds using CFD simulation. Three designs of magnetic separation were prepared and their efficiency was examined. As a result of the evaluation, the sufficient contact of particulate silica with the surface of magnetic emitters improved the magnetic separation effects. In addition, the loss of $SiO_2$ and the removal rate of $Fe_2O_3$ depended strongly on the particle size, flow rate and magnetic flux density. In addition, magnetic separation is quite effective for a particle size of $10{\mu}m$ with a 0.2 m/s flow rate.

  • Batch experiments for the soil washing coupled with the magnetic separation process were performed to remediate the soil contaminated with metal and oil wastes. The soil was seriously contaminated by Zn and TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon), of which concentrations were 1743.3 mg/kg and 3558.9 mg/kg, respectively, and initial concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cu, and TPH were higher than the 2nd SPWL (soil pollution warning limit: remediation goal). The soil washing with acidic solution was performed to remove heavy metals from the soil, but Pb and Zn concentration of the soil maintained higher than the 2nd SWPL even after the soil washing with acidic solution. The 2nd soil washing was repeated to increase the Pb and Zn removal efficiency and the Zn and Pb removal efficiencies additionally increased by only 8 % and 5 %, respectively, by the 2nd soil washing (> 2nd SPWL). The small particle separation from the soil was conducted to decrease the initial concentration of heavy metals and to increase the washing effectiveness before the soil washing and 4.1 % of the soil were separated as small particles (< 0.075 mm in diameter). The small particle separation lowered down Zn and Pb concentrations of soil to 1256.3 mg/kg (27.9 % decrease) and 325.8 mg/kg (56.3 % decrease). However, the Zn concentration of soil without small particles still was higher than the 2nd SPWL even after the soil washing, suggesting that the additional process is necessary to lower Zn concentration to below the 2nd SPWL after the treatment process. As an alternative process, the magnetic separation process was performed for the soil and 16.4 % of soil mass were removed, because the soil contamination was originated from unreasonable dumping of metal wastes. The Zn and Pb concentrations of soil were lowered down to 637.2 mg/kg (63.4 % decrease) and 139.6 mg/kg (81.5 % decrease) by the magnetic separation, which were much higher than the removal efficiency of the soil washing and the particle separation. The 1st soil washing after the magnetic separation lowered concentration of both TPH and heavy metals to below 2nd SPWL, suggesting that the soil washing conjugated with the magnetic separation can be applied for the heavy metal and TPH contaminated soil including high content of metal wastes.

  • Molybdenite is the primary molybdenum resource and is extracted via flotation due to its unique hydrophobic surface. Meanwhile, the grade and crystal size of mined molybdenite are decreasing. As a result, the size of the molybdenum ore required for liberation is decreasing, and the flotation process's feed size input is also decreasing. Therefore, in order to secure molybdenum, it is necessary to perform research on the flotation for the fine molybdenite. In this study, we developed a method to enhance the flotation efficiency of fine molybdenite particles in the range of 5-30 ㎛. The methodology involved implementing bubble size reduction and particle aggregation. Through simulations of bubble-particle collision probability and flotation experiments, we were able to find the ranges of bubble size and particle aggregate size that make fine particles float more effectively. This range provided the conditions for effective flotation of fine molybdenite particles. Therefore, we will implement the flotation conditions established in this study for fine molybdenum ore to improve the flotation process in molybdenum mineral processing plants in the future.

  • In the present study, gravity separation of speiss (6.74 g/㎤) and limestone (2.7 g/㎤) was investigated using a vibrating 1 mm-zirconia ball (5.6 g/㎤) bed as a medium. The floating ratio and separation efficiency with increasing the number of spiess and limestone granules were examined by changing the vibration frequency from 18 Hz to 26 Hz. During the vibration, the zirconia balls circulate inside the vessel, and the spiess granules sink with the zirconia balls, but limestone granules remain on the surface of the zirconia ball bed. As the number of particles of spiess and limestone granules increased, it was observed that the granules were congested in the path of the granule sinking, so the rate of particle sinking decreased, and that limestone granules overlapping with the spiess granule also sunk. Therefore, the separation efficiency decreases with increasing the number of granules, but when the vibrational frequency increases, there is no more congestion and the separation efficiency increases. When each of the three particles was added, a separation efficiency of 100% was acheived at 22 Hz, which indicates that a dry gravity separation process that does not require a drying process is possible.

  • Automobile shredder residue (ASR) is the final waste produced when end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are shredded. ASR can be separated using mineral-processing operations such as comminution, air classification, magnetic separation, and/or electrostatic separation. In this work, trajectory analyses of conductors (copper) and non-conductors (glass) in the ASR have been carried out using induction electrostatic separator for predicting or improving the ASR-separation efficiency. From results of trajectory analysis for conductors, the trajectories of copper wire by observation versus simulation for coarse particles of 0.5 and 0.25 mm showed consistent congruity. The observed 0.06 mm fine-particles trajectory was deflected toward the (-) attractive electrode owing to the charge-density effects due to the particle characteristics and relative humidity. In the case of non-conductors, the actual trajectory of dielectric glass deflected toward the (-) electrode, showing characteristics similar to those of conductive particles. The analyses of stereoscopic microscope and SEM & EDS found heterologous materials (fine ferrous particles and conductive organics) on the glass surface. This demonstrates the glass decreasing separation efficiency for non-ferrous metals during electrostatic separation for the recycling of ASR. Future work will require a pretreatment process for eliminating impurities from the glass and advanced trajectory-simulation processes.

  • An color sorting technique was introduced to recycle End-of-life automobile shredded bumpers. The color sorting is a innovate method of separating the differences in the color of materials which are difficult to separate in gravity and size classification by using a camera and an image process technique. Experiments were planned and optimal conditions were derived by applying BBD (Box-Behnken Design) in the reaction surface method. The effects of color sensitivity, feed rate and sample size were analyzed, and a second-order reaction model was obtained based on the analysis of regression and statistical methods and $R^2$ and p-value were 99.56% and < 0.001. Optimum recovery was 94.1% under the conditions of color sensitivity, feed rate and particle size of 32%, 200 kg/h, and 33 mm respectively. The recovery of actual experiment was 93.8%. The experimental data agreed well with the predicted value and confirmed that the model was appropriate.
