Blade Shape Design of Mixed-flow Pump Impellers and Diffusers in a Fixed Meridional Geometry (자오면 고정 형상에서 사류펌프 임펠러 및 디퓨져 날개형상 설계)

  • In this paper, the flow characteristics of the mixed-flow pump impellers and diffusers were numerically predicted by commercial CFD software and DOE(design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the mixed-flow pump by designing the impeller and diffuser in the mixed-flow pump. Geometric design variables were defined by the vane plane development which indicates the blade-angle distributions and length of the impeller and the diffusers. Firstly, the design optimization of the defined impeller geometric variables has been done. After that, the flow characteristics were analyzed in the point of incidence angle at the diffuser leading edge for the optimized impeller. Then design of the defined diffuser shape variables has been performed. The reason for the performance improvement was discussed by examining the flow characteristics through the diffuser.

  • FCEV uses electric energy generated from fuel cell stack, thus all consisting parts must be re-designed to be suitable for electricity based system. Cathode air blower which supplies compressed air into fuel cell stack has similar shape of turbocharger, but a radial turbine of traditional turbocharger is removed and high speed BLDC motor is installed . Generally, maximum 10% of electric power of fuel cell stack is consumed in air blower, therefore an effective design of air blower can improve the performance of FCEV directly. This study will present an aerodynamic design process of an air blower and compare computational results with experimental data.

  • In this paper, a wall climbing robot, called LAVAR, is developed, which is using an impeller for adhering. The adhesion mechanism of the robot consists of an impeller and two-layered suction seals which provide sufficient adhesion force for the robot body on the non smooth vertical wall and horizontal ceiling. The robot uses two driving-wheels and one ball-caster to maneuver the wall surface. A suspension mechanism is also used to overcome the obstacles on the wall surface. For its design, the whole adhering mechanism is analyzed and the control system is built up based on this analysis. The performances of the robot are experimentally verified on the vertical and horizontal flat surfaces.

  • 본 논문은 순환골재 생산 공정 중 수조에 응집된 슬러지를 자동으로 배출하는 장치의 개발에 관한 내용이다. 수조바닥에 응집해 있는 슬러지를 배출하기 위하여 모든 공정을 중지한 후 기계장비와 수작업으로 이루어지고 있는 작업환경을 대신하여 자동으로 실시간 배출할 수 있는 폐슬러지 자동배출장치를 개발하여 생산성과 작업효율을 향상시키는 것이 목적이다. 임펠러의 형상 및 회전수와 수조의 경사각을 최적의 수준으로 도출하여 설계 후 장치를 완성하였다. 생산공정 중 실시간으로 슬러지를 배출하여 생산성 향상은 물론이고, 독립적인 장비이므로 판매함으로서 이윤창출에도 큰 역할을 한다.

Performance Characteristics according to the Outlet Impeller Blade Shape of a Centrifugal Blower (원심블로어 임펠러 토출 날개 형상에 따른 성능특성)

  • This paper presents the performance characteristics of a centrifugal blower using the design parameters of an impeller blade. Two design variables, the bending length from the blade trailing edge and bending angles of an impeller blade, are introduced to analyze the effects on the blower performance. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are introduced to analyze the performance and internal flow of the blower. Relatively good agreement between experimental measurements and numerical simulation at the design flow condition is obtained. Throughout present study, it is known that pressure increases as the bending length from the trailing edge and bending angle increase while efficiency decreases. But efficiency is decreased. Detailed flow field inside the centrifugal blower is also analyzed and compared.

  • The cross-flow fans are widely used in various applications, due to their large capacity of mass flow and the size compactness. The flow fields of the cross-flow fan is, however, complex and it has many design parameters. Thus the general design guide has not sufficiently established yet, and the design strategies of cross-flow fans have been based on experiments. In the present study, the cross-flow fan performance and its two-dimensional flow characteristics are numerically analyzed by using the STAR-CD. The simulation is done by varying the several design parameters such as impeller blade shapes, the gap between the stabilizer and impeller. The computational results are compared with the experimental data at the fan outlet region. Finally some helpful guides for the optimum design of the cross-flow fan are proposed.

  • A small circulating water channel (CWC) for experiments ocean engineering is designed and made through the co-work of a company, MESTEC, and a college, Inha Technical Research Institute. General function of the elements of CWC are explained. The velocities in the test section are measured and analysed to estimate the performance of the CWC. The result of the velocity distribution is acceptable for experiments of ocean engineering.

  • An aerodynamic design technique of a centrifugal impeller is developed. The design procedure consists of a preliminary design, a three-dimensional blade surface generation, a flow analysis of impeller passage and a compatibility analysis for the designed impeller. To get a higher efficiency, the backswept impeller which has a lean angle and a parabolic blade surface is designed. In the present analysis of flow in an impeller, an inviscid quasi-three-dimensional method and a viscous three-dimensional method are used. Compatibility of the designed impeller is decided with the results of the analyses. The quasi-three-dimensional method is easy to use, but limited to a few conditions in real application for the prediction of the actual flow in the impeller. Since the viscous three-dimensional method proved to predict the real flow in the impeller relatively well, it can be used as a means for the decision of compatibility of the designed impeller.

  • A impeller hub is usually made through three forging processes : forward extrustion, upsetting and finishing. The finishing process is closed die forging in which the load increases abruptly at the final stage, resulting in underfilling in the finished product due to insufficient load capacity of the press. In this study, the rigid-plastic finite element analysis was applied to the impeller hub forging process in order to optimize process and to estimate required load. As a result, two kind of improvements for the process were suggested to reduce the load requirement in the finishing process.

  • In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller shroud for centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was studied. Numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various configurations of shroud. Each of the design parameters was divided into 3 levels. Total 15 design points were planned by central composite design (CCD) method, which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces based on the results of DOE were used to find the optimal shape of impeller shroud for high aerodynamic performance. The whole process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Results showed that the isentropic efficiency, which is the main performance parameter of the centrifugal compressor, was increased 0.4% through the optimization.
