  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate photothermal effect of laser, which eliminates and reduces bacteria causing periodontal disease, on treatment of periodontal disease. This study included subjects with moderate periodontitis who visited the Department of Oral Medicine, College of dentistry, Yonsei University. The subjects were divided into experimental group, where Argon laser treatment was used, and control group, where conventional subgingival curettage was used. Gingival fluids from each subject were collected prior and after 1 week of the treatment, and changes in number of bacterial colonies cultured from aerobic as well as anaerobic bacteria responsible for the periodontal disease, and changes in clinical indices related to the periodontal disease, such as plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, were analysed. As a result, the number of bacterial colonies of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria reduced after 1 week of the treatment in both groups, especially the bacterial colonies of anaerobic bacteria which showed statistically significant reduction(p<0.1). However, there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. Clinical indices including plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index were reduced after 1 week of the treatment in both groups. In the experimental group, gingival index(p<0.1) and sulcus bleeding index(p<0.01) showed significant reduction, and, in the control group, sulcus bleeding index(p<0.01) showed significant reduction. However, there were no significant differences in each indices between the two groups. The above results suggest that Argon laser could be used as a substitute of conventional subgingival curettage, or in combination with subgingival curettage which would increase the effect of the treatment. Although the possibility of clinical application of Argon laser was observed in this study, more randomized-controlled research, including acquirement of sufficient samples as well as long-termed follow up, would be necessary before clinically effective application of Argon laser.

  • The LAP (lipid accumulation product) index is an indicator of excessive fat accumulation in combination with the fasting triglyceride concentration and waist circumference. This study examined the relationship between the LAP index and ALT (alanine aminotransferase) level and the effect of the LAP index on the ALT level. Cross-sectional studies were conducted on healthy adult males without a history of liver disease. From January 2015 to June 2017, 13,854 adults between 20 and 70 years of age, who underwent health screening at a general hospital in Gyeonggi-do, were enrolled in this study. The LAP index was calculated as [waist circumference (cm)-65]${\times}$[triglyceride (mmol/L)] for males. Serum ALT abnormalities were set at 40 IU/L or more in males. All subjects underwent measurements of the anthropometric indicators and physiological examinations. A significant increase in ALT with increasing LAP quintiles was observed (p<0.001). The LAP index correlated with ALT (r=0.238, p<0.001). Insulin (r=0.449, p<0.001) and HDL-cholesterol (r=-0.369, p<0.001) were strongly correlated with LAP. In addition, the LAP index is a factor affecting the ALT level (p<0.001). As the LAP index increased, the risk of an elevated ALT was higher (p<0.001). In conclusion, the LAP index was a predictor of an ALT elevation in Korean men.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the range of resistive index(RI) of the cranial pancreaticoduodenal artery(cPDA) in the normal dog's and to assess the possibility of clinical application of RI for diagnosing a pancreatitis. Five patients with acute pancreatitis and 17 healthy adult beagle dogs were used. Duplex color Doppler ultrasonographic examination was performed by using a real-time scanner with 11-MHz linear-array transducer. The dogs were restrained in dorsal recumbency without the use of chemical agent. The mean RI of the normal pancreas(0.63$\pm$0.04) was significantly(t = 5.79, p = 0.001) different from acute pancreatitis dog(0.75$\pm$0.04). Duplex color Doppler ultrasonography was an useful technique for detecting and measuring RI of the cPDA. The evaluation of RI of the cPDA may be a valuable supportive diagnostic procedure for evaluating the pancreatitis or suspected in dogs.

  • Sunscreen is a product that blocks and scatters UV rays to protect them from UV rays. Domestic consumers generously invest in sunscreen, ranking first in the world in terms of sun care consumption per capita in 2019. Sunscreens are subject to a variety of factors, including regulations, ingredients, formulations, clinical trials, and product labeling, but are tightly controlled as product demand increases. In this study, various factors affecting the UV protection factor were investigated and analyzed. Preemptive measures such as continuous investigation are required so that various factors such as these do not become obstacles for domestic cosmetics companies to export, and to revitalize the export market with international competitiveness.

  • This study calculated vegetation indexes such as SR, NDVI, SAVI, and LAI to figure out correlations regarding vegetation by using high resolution KOMPSAT-2 images and LANDSAT images based on the forest biomass distribution map that utilized field survey data, satellite images and LiDAR data and then analyzed correlations between their values and forest biomass. The analysis results reveal that the vegetation indexes of high resolution KOMPSAT-2 images had higher correlations than those of LANDSAT images and that NDVI recorded high correlations among the vegetation indexes. In addition, the study analyzed the characteristics of hyperspectral images by using the COMIS of STSAT-3 and Hyperion images of a similar sensor, EO-1, and further the usability of biomass estimation in hyperspectral images by comparing vegetation index, which had relatively high correlations with biomass, with the vegetation indexes of LANDSAT with the same GSD conditions.
