  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of types of alkali-activators and curing conditions on the compressive and tensile behavior of fiber-reinforced cementless composites. Two types of alkali-activators and two curing conditions were determined and density test, compressive strength test, and uniaxial tension test were performed. Test results showed that the cementless composite with sodium silicate showed higher performance in terms of strength, tensile strain capacity, and toughness than that with calcium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. The effect of curing conditions depends on the types of alkali-activators.

  • This study investigated experimentally the tensile behavior of polyetylene fiber-reinforced cementless composite. Four types of polyetylene fiber-reinforced cementless composite were designed. The water to binder ratio was 0.30-0.38, and the amount of polyetylene fiber was 1.75 vol%. A series of experiments including uniaxial tension, density, and compression tests were performed to evaluate the performance of the composites. From the test results, it was exhibited that the composite has superior tensile performance such as high tensile strength and tensile strain capacity compared with other types of composites.

  • This paper presents materials and processing technique to manufacture low viscous strain-hardening cementitious composite which is suitable for structures requiring low viscosity of materials. The micromechanics and fracture mechanics tools coupled with processing techniques were adopted to achieve low viscosity of composites as well as high tensile strain capacity. Optimal volume and length of fibers and interfacial properties between fibers and matrix for composites with tensile strength of 2~3MPa were determined on the basis of the micromechanical analysis and the steady-state cracking theory. Then six mixtures were determined and the experiment was carried out to evaluate the viscosity and uniaxial tensile performance of those. From the test results, it is verified that the strain-hardening cementitious composite with low viscosity suitable for grouting applications in fresh state as well as high ductility over 1.5% in hardened state can be feasible.

  • In order to optimize the design of unidirectional fiber reinforced composite C-rings, a viscoelastic load relaxation behavior was analyzed under a point load. Initially, the deflection and bending stiffness were calculated based on the elastic beam theory and the viscoelastic relaxation and creep behaviors were derived from the elastic solution using the correspondence theorem. Besides the orthotropic mechanical properties of the composite, asymmetric mechanical property due to the different tensile and compressive properties were also considered. Except the deviation affected by the relatively large thickness of the specimen compared to the radius, the calculated relaxation showed good agreement with the experimental result.

  • Ultra-high performance concrete and high ductile cementless composite are considered as promising construction materials because those exhibits higher performance in terms of high strength and high ductility. The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the compressive strength and tensile behavior of ultra-high performance concrete and high ductile cementless composite. A series of experiments including density, compressive strength, and uniaxial tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the compressive strength and tensile strength of alkali-activated slag based high ductile cementless composite were lower than those of ultra-high performance concrete. However, the tensile strain capacity and toughness of alkali-activated slag based high ductile cementless composite were higher than those of ultra-high performance concrete. And it was exhibited that a high ductility up to 7.89% can be attainable by incorporating polyethylene fiber into the alkali-activated slag based cementless paste.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of unconfined strength of dry soil which was reinforced with polypropylene fiber. It is found that unconfined compressive strength and strain of dry soil without fiber were decreased as water content was increased. As mixing ration of fiber was increased , unconfined compressive strength and failure strain of dry soil reinforced with polypropylene fiber were increased. When mixing ration was larger than 0.5 % , unconfined compressive strength was gradually increased. The longer fiber was, the largest post peak strength was obtained and the larger strain was reached. Tensile strength of dried fiber reinforced soil was larger than that of dry soil without fiber.

  • At low normal stress levels, tensile strength of sand characteristically varies with either saturation or suction of soil in an up-and-down manner with a peak tensile strength that can occur at any degree of saturation. A theory that accurately predicts tensile strength of wet sand was presented in the previous study. In this study, the results of uniaxial tensile, suction-saturation and direct shear tests obtained from three sands (Esperance sand from Seattle, Washington, clean sand from Perth, Australia, and Ottawa sand) are used to validate the proposed theory. The closed form expression of the proposed theory can predict well the experimental data obtained from these sands in terms of the variation patterns of tensile strength over the entire saturation regimes, the magnitude of the tensile strength, its peak value, and the corresponding degree of saturation when the peak strength occurs.

  • Expansion agent is a very effective admixture for prevention of cracking due to autogenous/drying shrinkage and this can induce internal chemical prestress to embedded reinforcement. In this paper, tension-softening and hardening in cement mortar with steel and CSA expansion agent are experimentally evaluated. Cement mortar with steel reinforcement is prepared and tensile strength test is performed for evaluation of cracking and tensile behavior. In spite of slightly reduced strength and elasticity in CSA mortar, significantly increased tension-hardening behavior is evaluated in CSA mortar with induced chemical prestress. Furthermore previous tension softening models are compared with the test results and improvement are proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of polyethylene fibers with different tensile strength and aspect ratio on the properties of cementless composite. Three types of mixtures according to the types of polyethylene fibers and water-to-binder ratio were prepared and density, compressive strength and tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the mixture reinforced by polyethylene fiber with a low tensile strength by 10 % and a high aspect ratio by 8.3 % had a high tensile strain capacity by 11.7 %, a high toughness by 12.4 %, and a low crack width by 9.1 %. It was also observed that high tensile strain capacity and better cracking pattern could be achieved by increasing the water-to-binder ratio of composite although its strength is low.

  • The physical and mechanical properties of volcanic glass, which is distributed in the Samho area, South Korea were studied. Laboratory rock tests were carried out in order to obtain the various properties of rocks. Specific gravity, water content, absorption, porosity and wave velocity were measured for the physical properties. Uniaxial and triaxial compressive tests, Brazilian test and point load test were also performed for the mechanical properties. The tests of volcanic glass revealed that the apparent specific gravity, water content and absorption were 2.28, $1.67\%$ and $1.72\%$, respectively. Porosity $(3.87\%)$ was lower, whereas P-wave velocity (5330m/s) and S-wave velocity (2980 m/s) were relatively higher. Brazilian tensile strength ot 7.2MPa, and point load strength of 2.6MPa were among the mechanical properties of the rock. Uniaxial compressive strength (62.4MPa) estimated ken point load strength was very closed to the value (66.0MPa) from the uniaxial compressive test. Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were E=43.2 GPa and v=0.28, respectively. Drawing the tangent line to Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion showed the cohesion of 20.1MPa and internal fraction angle of $28.6^{\circ}$.
