In the downstream areas of the Nakdong river, Pusan clays are commonly found and thickness may reach to maximum of 100m. From geological point of view, Pusan clay are characterized as holocene clays, deposited for approximately 20,000 years ago. Recently, there have been many construction projects based on these soft ground areas. It is needed to know clearly soil properties of the areas for design and safety analysis, especially undrained shear strength of soft clays. However, Pusan clay have not been studied systematically because the clay layers are usually very deep, having high sensitivity characteristic. In this study, undisturbed UD samples obtained from the downstream areas of the Nakdong river were researched using laboratory tests (CthUE, CKcUC, CIUC, UU and UC) and in-situ tests (Field Vane, CPTu). The undrained shear strength characteristics of the samples were depicted using stress-strain relationship.

Volcanic rocks formed from magma near the earth surface commonly show vesicular structures due to exsolution of gaseous phases in magma. The distinction and the amount of vesicles are greatly various, but there are few researches on the effect of volume percentage of vesicles on the mechanical properties. In this study, mechanical characteristics of volcanic rocks in relation to the porosity are investigated through experimental tests with Jeju basalt. Two methods (the buoyancy method and the caliper method) are adopted for measuring porosity. And unconfined compressive strength, elastic modulus, tensile strength, and elastic wave velocity are plotted against porosity in order to propose the empirical relations after the regression analysis. Also, unconfined compressive strength and the elastic modulus in relation to the elastic wave velocity are proposed with the analysis. In the case of vesicular rocks with more than 5% porosity, it is found that the buoyancy method provides more accurate estimation of porosity than the caliper method. The unconfined compressive strength, the elastic modulus, and the elastic wave velocity decrease curvilinearly with increasing in porosity. Also, the unconfined compressive strength and the elastic modulus increase linearly with increasing in elastic wave velocity.
For designing concrete structures, engineers are provided data from unidirectional flexure test in most cases. But real structural components such as pavements and deck panel are subjected to multiaxial stress throughout their body. Therefore, biaxial flexure test for concrete may be considered as a gage of the performance of concrete in service. In this paper, we propose the optimum biaixial flexture test (BFT) to measure the biaxial flexural strength of concrete. This method are an improved version of the ring-on-ring test which have been used extensively in the fields of ceramics and biomaterials. The optimum geometry of the test specimen was determined by using a three-dimensional finite element analysis. A series of test data obtained from the proposed test method is provided to show that the proposed optimum biaxial flexure test method can be used to identify the biaxial tensile strength of concrete.
In this paper, statistical treatments of effective properties for plain weave textile composites were presented. Configurations up to 32 layers with varied stacking phase shifts were considered. Effective properties were calculated by numerical simulation in which uni-axial tensile and shear load were applied at unit cell. Sample analysis was utilized to consider the inherent randomness in the phase shift and the results were treated statistically. It was found that effective properties were dependent on stacking phase shifts for thin plain weave textile composites. The distribution of $E_{xx}$ and $V_{xy}$ were skewed and the range of possible values was relatively large. As the number of layers increased, however, the distribution width became narrower and mean values converged. In contrast, $G_{xy}$ was not affected by phase shifts and thickness changes.

This paper describes the extension of the numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to monotonic in plane shear and introduced in the companion paper, to simulate effectively the behavior of RE structures under cyclic loadings. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress strain relation of concrete, which across the tension compression region, is defined. In addition, unlike previous simplified stress strain relations, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect we used. The modifications of the stress strain relation of steel are also introduced to reflect pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.
In this research, evaluation of adhesion in tension property of SBR-modified concrete to ordinary portland cement concrete was conducted with uniaxial direct tensile bond test which was proposed by Kuhlmann. A test set-up was fabricated in order to minimize the eccentric force by introducing a joint which might fully rotate. The main experimental variables were cement-latex ratios, surface preparations and moisture levels. The results obtained were as follows: The LMC specimen at 15% latex-cement ratio increased the adhesion in tension by range of 37% compared to that of conventional cement concrete. This might be due to latex film formed between cement paste and aggregate. The effects of surface preparation on bond of latex modified concrete to conventional concrete were significant at the conditions by sand paper and wire brush. A better bond could be achieved by rough surface rather than smooth. The saturated and surface dry (SSD) condition were considered to be the most appropriate moisture level followed by wet, finally by dry. Thus, a proper surface preparation and moisture level are quite necessity in order to obtain better bonding at LMC overlay.
An almost permanent anchor (friction type) is resistant to ground deformation due to the friction between the soil and grout at a fixed length from the anchor body. The purpose of this study is to calculate the force of bearing resistance for a bearing anchor in enlarged boreholes. We conducted analytical and numerical analyses, along with laboratory testing, to find the quantities of bearing resistance prior to grouting in EBA (Enlarged Bearing Anchor) construction. The force of bearing resistance from the analytical method was defined as a function of general borehole diameter, expanded borehole diameter, and soil unconfined compressive strength. We also employed the Flac 3D finite difference numerical modeling code to analyze the bearing resistance of the soil conditions. We then created a laboratory experimental model to measure bearing resistance and carried out a pull-out test. The results of these three analyses are presented here, and a regression analysis was performed between bearing resistance and uniaxial compression strength. The laboratory results yield the strongest bearing resistance, with reinforcement 28.5 times greater than the uniaxial compression strength; the analytical and numerical analyses yielded values of 13.3 and 9.9, respectively. This results means that bearing resistance of laboratory test appears to be affected by skin friction resistance. To improve the reliability of these results, a comparison field study is needed to verify which results (analytical, numerical, or laboratory) best represent field observations.

In order to evaluate the physical properties of rock which might serve as a database for both mining and civil works, a lot of laboratory tests for Jecheon limestones were conducted to find unit weight, absorption ratio, porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, poisson's ratio, tensile strength, shore hardness, friction angle and cohesion. On investigation of the mechanical properties of both the gray limestone and the clayey limestone distributed in the studied region, the clayey limestone turned out to have more weak mechanical properties which might come from low unit weight, high absorption ratio and high porosity of rocks. The failure criteria of Jecheon limestones were discussed by means of both Mohr-Coulomb criterion and Hoek-Brown criterion. Regression analyses of the physical properties obtained from a lot of laboratory tests were also conducted by means of both linear and multiple regression analyses.

In this study, both in-situ stress measurements and a lot of laboratory rock tests were conducted at a metal mine in Jeongseon, Korea. The stress ratio obtained from in-situ stress measurements showed a tendency to decrease according to depth below surface and its average value was 1.10. The mechanical properties such as unit weight, absorption ratio, porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, tensile strength, shore hardness, friction angle and cohesion were investigated for the four different rocks mainly distributed at a studied mine, which were dolomite, felsite, granite and magnetite. The mechanical properties of the four different rocks were compared by means of statistical analyses, whereupon the felsite and the granite turned out to have more strength characteristics than the magnetite. The correlation of mechanical properties was also investigated, whereupon a few results against the general correlation were found out. The failure criteria of the four different rocks were finally discussed by means of both Mohr-Coulomb criterion and Hoek-Brown criterion.
Mechanical properties and morphology of pectin/starch blend films depending upon the composition and plasticizer ratio were studied. Blends were prepared continuously in a twin-screw extruder. Films were prepared using a single-screw extruder with slit die. Most of the blends showed a good thermoplastic behavior, while the blends with very high ratio of pectin/starch had a poor thermoplasticity. Tensile properties of blend films were changed significantly by the amount of glycerol and relatively little by the ratio of pectin/starch. Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) curves of wet blends showed a transition similar to glass transition temperature(Tg) at about $125^{\circ}C$. It was found by Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) study that there exists a good interfacial adhesion between pectin and starch.
