Characteristics of Amberlite IRN 77, a cation exchange resin, and the mechanisms of its adsorption equilibria with Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III) and Fe(III) ions were investigated for the application of the demineralizing process in the primary coolant system of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The optimum dosage of the resin for removal of the dissolved metal ions at $200mgL^{-1}$ was 0.6 g for 100 mL solution. Most of each metal ion was adsorbed onto the resin in an hour from the start of the reaction. Each metal adsorption onto the resin could be well represented by Langmuir isotherms. However, in the case of Fe(III) adsorption, continuous formation of Fe-oxide or -hydroxide and its subsequent precipitation inhibited the completion of the equilibrium between the metal and the adsorbent Cobalt(II) and Ni(II), which have an equivalent electrovalence, were adsorbed to the resin with a similar adsorption amount when they coexisted in the solution. However, Cr(III) added to the solution competitively replaced Co(II) and Ni(II) which were already adsorbed onto the resin, resulting in desorption of these metals into the solution. The result was likely due to a higher adsorption affinity of Cr(III) than Co(II) and Ni(II). This implies that the interactively competitive adsorption of multi-cations onto the resin should be fully considered for an efficient operation of the demineralizing ion exchange process in the primary coolant system.

In this study, we prepared pelletized porous carbon adsorbent (PCA) according to the different pyrolysis temperature using activated carbon and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder for the removal of toluene, which is one of the representative volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We investigated physical characteristics of PCA using FE-SEM, BET, TGA and evaluated their adsorption capacity for toluene using GC. It was confirmed that the formability of pellets composed of the activated carbon, PVA and solvent of mass mixing ratio was 1 : 0.2 : 0.8 was the most outstanding. Toluene adsorption capacity was evaluated by measuring the maximum time when more than 99% of toluene adsorbed on the pellet. The specific surface area of the adsorbent pyrolyzed at $300^{\circ}C$ was measured as 4.7 times in $941.9m^2/g$ compared to that of the unpyrolyzed pellet. Micropore volume and toluene adsorption capacity of PCA increased fivefold to be 0.30 cc/g and thirteenfold to be 26 hours compared to that of the unpyrolyzed pellet, respectively. These results were attributed to the change of pore size and specific surface area due to the PVA content and the different pyrolysis temperature.
In this study, activated clay treated with H2SO4 (20% by weight) and heat at 90 ℃ for 8 h for acid white soil was used as an adsorbent for the removal of PO43--P in water. Prior to the adsorption experiment, the characteristics of activated clay was examined by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) and BET surface area analyser. The adsorption of PO43--P on activated clay was steeply increased within 0.25 h and reached equilibrium at 4 h. At 5 mg/L of low PO43--P concentration, roughly 98% of adsorption efficiency was accomplished by activated clay. The adsorption data of PO43--P were introduced to the adsorption isotherm and kinetic models. It was seen that both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were applied well to describe the adsorption behavior of PO43--P on activated clay. For adsorption PO43--P on activated clay, the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm coefficients, KF and Q, were found to be 8.3 and 20.0 mg/g, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model was more suitable for adsorption of PO43--P in water/activated clay system owing to the higher correlation coefficient R2 and the more proximity value of the experimental value qe,exp and the calculated value qe,cal than the pseudo-first-order kinetics model. The results of study indicate that activated clay could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of PO43-P from water.

Korean pine(Pinus densiflora) bark was evaluated for its adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by running a series of batch experiments. Prior to the tests, the milled barks were treated with 1 N NaOH or 1 N HCl to examine the effect of surface modification. For comparison, untreated bark was tested under same condition. Within the tested pH range between 3 and 6, NaOH treatment increased Cu(II) adsorption capacity by $139\sim184%$, while HCl treatment decreased it by $37\sim42%$. Maximum copper ion uptake by bark was observed at pH $5\sim6$, but pH of solution was not a potent influence. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the sorption of copper ion onto bark. For NaOH-treated bark, the calculated sorption capacity$(q_e)$ increased from 6.58 to 12.77 mg/g, while the equilibrium rate constant$(k_2)$ decreased from 0.284 to 0.014 g/mg/min as initial Cu(II) concentration doubled from 100 mg/L. A batch isotherm test using NaOH-treated bark showed that equilibrium sorption data were represented by both the Langmuir model and the Freundlich model. It was confirmed that carboxylic acid of bark was involved in the Cu(II) adsorption. For NaOH-treated bark, in particular, carboxylate ion produced by hydrolysis or saponification appeared to be a major functional roup responsible for the enhanced Cu(II) sorption.
In this study, the adsorption efficiency of mixed heavy metals in aqueous solution was investigated using modified activated carbon. Moreover, the heavy-metal stabilization treatment of contaminated marine sediment was achieved using modified activated carbon as stabilizing agents. From the experimental results, it was shown that the adsorption equilibrium was attained after 120 mins. Heavy metal adsorption was characterized using Freundlich and Langmuir equations. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to the Langmuir model in modified activated carbon. The adsorption uptake of $As^{3+}$ (28.47 mg/g) was higher than $Cr^{6+}$ (13.28 mg/g). In case of the $Cr^{6+}$, the results showed that adsorption uptake decreased with increasing pH from 6 to 10. However, adsorption of $As^{3+}$ slightly increased in the increasing change of pH. The modified activated carbon was applied for a wet-curing duration of 120 days. From the sequential extraction results, the exchangeable, carbonate, and oxides fractions of Cr and As in sediment decreased by 5.8% and 7.6%, respectively.

In this study, sorption coefficients (${\log}K_{OC}$, n) for the binding of phenanthrene (PHE) to soil humins, insoluble fraction of soil humc substances (HS), were determined and relationship between the sorption coefficients and structural characteristics of the soil humins were investigated. The soil humins used in the present study were isolated from 7 different soils including 5 domestic soils, an IHSS standard and a peat soil, and characterized by elemental analysis and CPMAS $^{13}C$ NMR method. $^{13}C$ NMR spectral features indicate that the soil humins are mainly made up of aliphatic carbons (57.1~72.3% in total carbon) with high alkyl-C moiety, and the alkyl-C contents ($C_{Al-H,C}$, %) was in order of granite soil Hu (26~42%) > volcanic ash soil, HL Hu (23.9%) > Peat Hu (14.0%). The results of correlation study show that a positive relationship ($r^2$ = 0.77, p < 0.05) between organic carbon normalized-sorption coefficients ($K_{OC}$, mL/g) and alkyl-C contents($C_{Al-H,C}$, %), while negative relationship ($r^2$ = (-)0.74, p < 0.05) between Freundlich sorption parameter (n) and H,C-substituted aromatic carbon contents ($C_{Ar-H,C}$, %). The magnitude of $K_{OC}$ values are also negatively well correlated with polarity index (e.g., PI, N + O)/C) ($r^2$ = (-)0.74, p < 0.1). These results suggest that the binding capacity (e.g., $K_{OC}$) for PHE is increased in soil humin molecules having high contents of alkyl-C or lower polarity, and nonlinear sorption for PHE increased as the H,C-substituted aromatic carbon contents ($C_{Ar-H,C}$, %) in the soil humins increased. The PHE sorption characteristics on soil humins are discussed based on the dual reactive mode of sorption model.
Soil physical-chemical properties and phosphorous adsorption characteristics were investigated to obtain the informations of the appropriate fertilization and soil management in Baicheng region, China, where agricultural circumstances at present forces to consider the use of land for crop production. Soils were collected from one uncultivated and three cultivated lands on August 1993. Soil $_PH$ was very higher in uncultivated land than in cultivated land, their values were 10.2 and 7.4, respectively. Regardless of cultivation, soil organic matter contents were below 2%, and concentrations of available soil phosphorus expressed as Bray 1 P and Olson P were less than 10 mg P $kg^{-1}$, however, cation exchange capacity was higher than 20 cmol(+) $kg^{-1}$. For uncultivated soil, the values of exchangeable sodium percent and calcium saturation percent were higher than 100%. The major cation of soil saturation paste extracts was Na regardless of land use type. Based on electrical conductivity and sodium adsorption ratio of saturation paste extracts, uncultivated soil was classified as saline-sodic soil and cultivated soil was classified as sodic or normal soil. The maximum adsorption capacity of phosphorus calculated by Langmuir isotherm ranged from 406 to 521 mg P ,$kg^{-1}$. The constraints of soils in Baicheng regions for agricultural cops werw high salt concentration, unfavorable soil chemical composition such as low concentration of available phosphorous, and poor drainage due to soil dispersion by high Na concentration. Therefore, the soil in Baicheng region, need the application of phosphorus fertilizer to increase the soil fertility and the proper soil management to improve the soil physical property especially permeability and soil structure.
This study examines the effect of submergence on phosphorus adsorption characteristics in Gangseo(paddy soil), Yesan(non-cultivated soil), and Jungdong soil(upland soil). The soils were submerged with glucose sol'n at $28^{\circ}C$ for 17 days. After the submergence, the phosphorus adsorption was conducted at three temperatures(5, 25 and $45^{\circ}C$). The phosphorus adsorption maximum($X_m$) and the equilibrium constant(K) were obtained by Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the heat of adsorption(${\Delta}H$) was calculated by van't Hoff's equiation. Results obtained are as follows ; 1. The amounts of adsorbed P were increased with temperature, but the effects of temperature on rate of P adsorption were very small in all three soils. 2. By submergence, $X_m$ were increased from 500mg P/kg to 850mg P/kg in Gangseo soil, from 1,850mg P/kg to 3,300mg P/kg in Yesan soil, and from 310mg P/kg to 670mg P/kg in Jungdong soil. But the effects of temperature on $X_m$ were very small in all three soils. 3. Submergence decreased K for Gangseo and Yesan soils, but increased for Jungdong soil. Whereas K were increased with temperature in all three soils. 4. By submergence, ${\Delta}H$ for Gangseo soil was greatly increased (from 2.2 Kcal/mole to 3.5 Kcal/mole), whereas that for Yesan soil changed little (from 5.7 Kcal/mole to 5.5 Kcal/mole). It was 4.4 Kcal/mole in submerged Jungdong soil.
$ZrO_2$ Powder was Prepared by sol-gel process and the adsorption characteristic of cobalt($Co^{2+}$) by $ZrO_2$ adsorbent in high-temperature water was investigated using batch adsorption experiment with a stirred autoclave. The prepared $ZrO_2$ was calcined at $600{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$ and analyzed by X-ray diffractometry, SEM, BET surface area, FT-IR and TG-DTA measurement. The tetragonal Phase of $ZrO_2$ is produced $480^{\circ}C$ from amorphous gel at temperature $480^{\circ}C$. Both tetragonal and monoclinic phase of $ZrO_2$ exist at temperature between $600^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$. At temperature $1200^{\circ}C$, tetragonal to monoclinic phase trasition is occurred. The $Co^{2+}$ adsorption capacity of $ZrO_2$ calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours is 0.16 meq $Co^{2+}/g$ adsorbent in the high temperature at $250^{\circ}C$. The adsorption of $Co^{2+}$ on the $ZrO_2$ adsorbent is irreversible endothermic in the temperature range ($125-175^{\circ}C$). The standard enthalpy change (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) of $ZrO_2$ calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours is 18 kJ/gmol.
A water soluble polymer, polycondensate of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin (PBE), was synthesized by condensation of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin. The characteristics of PBE were determined by IR spectroscopy, low angle light scattering measurement, and $\zeta$ potential measurement. Its interactions with colloidal bentonite particles in aqueous medium were also studied. The results of the studies are as follows : PBE is a cationic polyelectrolyte carrying tertiary ammonium ions on its backbone. The average molecular weight of PBE is found to be about 1,600. The adsorption of PBE on the colloidal bentonite particles are well described with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As the amounts of PBE adsorbed on the bentonite particles increase, the $\zeta$ potential of the particles changes its sign from negative to positive. This inversion of charge confirms that PBE is cationic in nature. The adsorption of PBE onto the bentonite particles was found to occur through cation exchange reaction. It has been shown that PBE has flocculation effects on the colloidal suspension of bentonite. It has also enhanced effects of filtrability on the digested sludge.
