  • Laboratory dynamic tests are carried out to assess the liquefaction potential of saturated sands in most countries. However, simple results such as the maximum cyclic shear stress and the number of cycles at initial liquefaction are used in the experimental assessment of liquefaction potential, even though various results can be obtained from the dynamic test. In addition, it seemed to be inefficient because more than three dynamic tests with different stress ratio have to be carried out to draw a liquefaction resistance experimental curve. To improve the present assessment method fur liquefaction potential, a new critical resistible characteristic far soil liquefaction is proposed and verified through conventional cyclic triaxial tests with Jumunjin sand. In the proposed method, various experimental data such as effective stress path, stress-strain relationship, and the change of excess pore water pressure can be used in the determination of cumulative plastic shear strains at every 1/4 cycle. Especially, the critical cumulative plastic shear strain to initiate liquefaction can be defined in a specific point called a phase change point in the effective stress path and it can be calculated from a hysteric curve of stress-strain relationship up to this point. Through this research, it is found that the proposed cumulative plastic shear strain can express the dissipated energy to resist dynamic loads and consider the realistic soil dynamic behavior of saturated sands reasonably. It is also found that the critical plastic shear strain can be used as a registible index of soils to represent the critical soil dynamic state, because it seems to include no effect of large deformation.

  • Criteria of the current asphalt mix design, Marshall method, includes the stability and flow which are not related with field performance of HMA mixture, together with the air void, Void filled with asphalt (VFA) and/or Void of mineral Aggregate(VMA). In addition, the limits of stability and flow are satisfied in most cases, the Optimum asphalt content (OAC) is determined based on volumetric properties, such as the air void and/or VFA and/of VMA. Therefore, many researchers have sought mechanistic properties which can replace the stability and flow, making the designed mixture having potential for better field performance. This study initiated to develope a mix design by introducing two performance-related mechanistic properties, the deformation strengh and fracture energy, in place of the stability and flow of the Marshall method. The deformation strength $(S_D)$ from the Kim Test has a high correlation with rutting property and the fracture energy(FE) from the indirect tensile test represents the fatigue cracking property of asphalt mixture. Four types of asphalt mixture were prepared for examining possibility of using the suggested mix design method in comparison with current methods. The results showed that mechanical properties were reflected in determination of OAC with this suggested mix design, unlike the existing Marshall method.

  • Smart sensors embedable in composite wind turbine blades have been required to be researched for monitoring the health status of large wind turbine blades during real-time operation. In this research, the feasibility of packaged FBG sensor probes was studied through the experiments of composite blade trailing edge specimens in order to detect cracking and debonding damages. The instants of cracking and debonding generated in the shear web were confirmed by rapid changes of the wavelength shifts from the bare FBG sensor probes. Packaged FBG sensor probes were proposed to remove the fragile property of bare FBG sensor probes attached on composite wind blade specimens. Strain and temperature sensitivity of fabricated probes installed on the skin of blade specimen were almost equal to those of a bare FBG sensor. Strain sensitivity was measured to be ${\mu}{\varepsilon}$/pm in a strain range from to 0 to 600 ${\mu}{\varepsilon}$, and the calculated temperature sensitivity was to be 48 pm/$^{\circ}C$ in the heating test up to 80 degree.

  • In the case of the UHP (Ultra high performance) tire that the demand has increased rapidly, compared with the commonly used tire, severe deformation has been observed because of the low aspect ratio. When repeated deformations are applied to the sidewall rubber, accumulated fatigue damage may cause fatigue failure. Thus, the evaluation of the durability of the tire sidewall rubber has become a very important issue to prevent accidents that occur while the vehicle is running. However, the research and design criteria for the durability performance of the tire sidewall rubber hardly exist. In this study, we suggest a lifetime prediction formula using strain energy density obtained by performing tensile tests and fatigue tests on two different kinds of the tire sidewall compounds. Additionally, the applicability of our findings for low fuel consumption tires was reviewed by converting the fatigue life of the sidewall rubber into the expected mileage of the tire.

  • Ground anchor method is one of the most popular reinforcing technology in Korea. For the sound monitoring of slope reinforced by permanent anchor for a long period, monitoring the tension force of ground anchor is very important. However, special technology except conventional load cell has not been developed for this purpose. In this paper, a new method is described to replace the conventional strain gauge and V.W. type load cell which has been commonly used as a prestress force monitoring tool for a short-term and long-term. Four 11.5 m long strain detectable tension type anchors were made using FBG sensor embedded tendon since FBG sensor is smaller than strain gauge type load cell and does not have noise from electromagnetic wave. Each two set strain detectable tension type anchors were installed into the different ground conditions, i.e., soft rock and weathered granite soil. Prestress force of ground anchor was monitored during the loading-unloading step from in-situ pullout test using proposed FBG sensor embedded in the tendon and the conventional load cell Test results show that the prestress force monitored from FBG sensor may well be used practically, for it almost matches with that measured from expensive load cell.

  • Previous test results showed that the current ASTM(American Standard for Testing and Materials) grip adapter for GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) rebar was not fully successful in developing the design tensile strength of GFRP rebars with reasonable accuracy. It is because the current ASTM grip adapter which is composed of a pair of rectangular metal blocks of which inner faces are grooved along the longitudinal direction does not take into account the various geometric characteristics of GFRP rebar such as surface treatment, shape of bar cross section as well as physical characteristics such as poisson effect, elastic modulus in the transverse direction and so on. The objective of this paper is to provide how to proportion the optimum diameter of inner groove in ASTM grip adapter to develop design tensile strength of GFRP rebar. The proportioning of inner groove in ASTM grip adapter is based on the force equilibrium of GFRP rebar between tensile capacity and minimum frictional resistance required along the grip adapter. The frictional resistance of grip adapter is calculated based on the compressive strain compatibility in radial direction induced by the difference between diameter of GFRP rebar and inner groove In ASTM grip. All testing procedures were made according to the CSA S806-02 recommendations. From the preliminary test results on round-type GFRP rebars, it was found that maximum tensile loads acquired under the same testing conditions is highly affected by the diameter of inner groove in ASTM grip adapter. The grip adapter with specific dimension proportioned by proposed method recorded the highest tensile strength among them.

  • In this study TiNi/A16061 shape memory composite is introduced as one of new material using a shape memory alloy. High tensile strength of composite due to compressive residual stress in matrix by the shape memory effect of TiNi fiber can be produced. This composite can remove the tensile residual stress by the difference of coefficients of thermal expansion between fiber and matrix. one of the significant weak point of metal matrix composite. In this paper, shape memory composites are made by squeeze casting. And then, microstructure and fatigue properties of the composites by shape memory effect above inverse transformation temperature A, of TiNi alloy are discussed. The results of the fatigue crack control properties of TiNi/A16061 shape memory composite by a squeeze casting are summarized as follows the effect of fatigue crack propagation control at 363K increases according to the increase of volume fraction and prestrain in composites.

  • This study was intended to estimate the axial deformation of joint between pavement modules in the rapid-constructible modular pavement system, and to investigate the applicability of two-phase composites for a joint material, which was composed of cement paste, epoxy, or polyurethane as a matrix and sand as particles. A case which had supports under the pavement module as well as a case which the module was put on roadbed directly were considered in FEM analysis for the axial deformation. The effect of self-weight, live load, thermal change, and drying shrinkage were estimated and the thermal change was found to cause the largest deformation compared to the others. Deformation capacity of two-phase composites was predicted using the modified shear-lag model. In the analytical results for the elastic modulus and maximum tensile strain with different volume fractions of sand, 20~30 % replacement of sand was revealed to satisfy the required strain capacity with economy when if the width of joint was designed to be 15~20 mm.

  • Moisture damage of asphalt pavements can usually occur because of the loss of adhesion and cohesion between the asphalt binder and aggregate in the asphalt mixture due to presence of water. And this is one of the causes that is effect on the main distress of asphalt pavement. The objective of this study is to find out moisture damage characteristics of asphalt pavement. Effects of this study changes of the material properties and resistance characteristics of moisture damage on the asphalt mixtures under various temperatures and repeated immersion using indirect tensile test and modify Lottman test were evaluated during this study. The asphalt mixtures were produced using straight asphalt binder, SBS modified asphalt binder and aggregates. The material properties (resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, failure energy and $DCSE_f$) of the asphalt mixtures were generally decreased with increasing to moisture damage caused by the number of repeated immersion. The decrease ratios of material properties by repeated immersion on SBS modified asphalt mixtures were lower than those of straight asphalt mixtures at all three test temperatures. As a conclusion, current criterion for evaluation moisture damage of asphalt mixtures is difficult for using distinction standard because of the limited evaluation criterion with one time immersion and single material property. Based on this research, to evaluate long term moisture damage on asphalt mixtures, material property tests of various kinds with repeated immersion test are considered.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed to overcome the low tensile strengths and brittleness of conventional concrete. Considering that UHPC, owing to its composition and the use of steel fibers, develops a compressive strength of 180 MPa as well as high stiffness, the top flange of the steel girder may be superfluous in the composite beam combining a slab made of UHPC and the steel girder. In such composite beam, the steel girder takes the form of an inverted-T shaped structure without top flange in which the studs needed for the composition of the steel girder with the UHPC slab are disposed in the web of the steel girder. This study investigates experimentally and analytically the flexural behavior of this new type of composite beam to propose details like stud spacing and slab thickness for further design recommendations. To that goal, eight composite beams with varying stud spacing and slab thickness were fabricated and tested. The test results indicated that stud spacing running from 100 mm to 2 to 3 times the slab thickness can be recommended. In view of the relative characteristic slip limit of Eurocode-4, the results showed that the composite beam developed ductile behavior. Moreover, except for the members with thin slab and large stud spacing, most of the specimens exhibited results different to those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode-4 because of the high performance developed by UHPC.
