  • A constitutive model unifying plasticity and crack damage mode)s was developed to address the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete planar members. The stress of concrete in tension-compression was conceptually defined by the sum of the compressive stress developed by the strut-action of concrete and the tensile stresses developed by tensile cracking. The plasticity model with multiple failure criteria was used to describe the isotropic damage of compressive crushing affected by the anisotropic damage of tensile cracking. The concepts of the multiple fixed crack damage model and the plastic flow model of tensile cracking were used to describe the tensile stress-strain relationship of multi-directional cracks. This unified model can describe the behavioral characteristics of reinforced concrete in cyclic tension-compression conditions, i.e. multiple tensile crack orientations, progressively rotating crack damage, and compressive crushing of concrete. The proposed constitutive model was implemented to finite element analysis, and it was verified by comparison with existing experimental results from reinforced concrete shear panels and walls under cyclic load conditions.

  • After analyzing excavated $17-18^{th}$ century silk fibers through a scanning electron microscopy, we discovered seven different kinds of fracture morphology. Using Morton & Hearle fiber fracture morphology, we classified the findings into four different categories. Type I is tensile failure resulting from brittle fracture, granular fracture, and ductile fracture. Type II is fatigue failure caused by tensile fatigue, flex fatigue, and axial split (fibrillation). Type III is bacterial deterioration discovered only in excavated artifacts. Type IV is a combination of the three above. Humid underground conditions and the infiltration of bacteria caused the fibers to swell and weaken its interfibrillar cohesion. Fractures occur when drying and processing an excavated artifact that is already in a fragile condition. Therefore, one must minimize damage through a prompt cleaning process and make sure that the least possible force is exerted on the fabric during any treatment for repair and exhibition.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis technique was newly developed to evaluate the damage propagation characteristics of concrete structures. To do this, numerical techniques are incorporated for the concrete members up to the compressive damage due to the bending compressive forces after the tensile crack based on the deformation mechanism. Especially, for the compressive damage stage after the tensile crack, the crack propagation process will be analyzed numerically using the concept of an equivalent plastic hinged length. Using this concept, it can be established that section forces, such as axial forces and the moment cracks takes place, can be related to the width of the crack making it possible to analyze the crack extension.

  • Moisture damage of asphalt mixtures can occur because of a loss of bond between the asphalt binder and the fine and coarse aggregates. Therefore, moisture damage on asphalt pavements is the main cause of potholes, which is one of the main distress type of asphalt pavement. The purpose of this study is to evaluation effect moisture damage on material properties of asphalt mixtures through the laboratory performance test. The existing Modified Lottman test procedure was improved and the number of times that thermal cyclic conditioning can be added until the asphalt mixtures is damaged, was tested in order to exhibit the changes of the material properties because of moisture damage by immersion. Through the above experiments, it was found that the material properties of asphalt mixtures on room-temperature were rapidly decreased with loss of about 50% at initial stage of moisture damage caused by the amount of repeated immersion. Also, it was found that the property damage ratio using material properties of failure energy and $DCSE_f$ by test temperature $25^{\circ}C$ were showed a high relationship to moisture damage of the asphalt mixtures caused by the amount of repeated immersion.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) have gained increased application in aerospace structures because of their specific strength and stiffness, but are sensitive to impact-induced damage. An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the impact resistance of CFRP according to the ply angle. The specimens of angle ply laminate composites were employed with [0.deg. $_{6}$/ .deg.$_{10}$/0.deg.$_{6}$], in which 6 kinds of ply angle such as .deg.=15.deg., 30.deg., 45.deg., 60.deg., 75.deg. and 90.deg. were selected. The impact tests were conducted using the air gun type impact testing machine by steel balls of diameter of 5 mm and 10 mm, and impact-induced damages were evaluated under same impact speed of V=60m/s. The impact damaged zones were observed through a scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). The obtained results were summarized as follows: (1) Delaminations on the interfacial boundaries showed th directional characteristics to the fiber directions. The delamination area on the impact side (interface A) was considerably smaller compared to that of the opposite side (interface B). (2) Cracks corresponding to other delaminations than those mentioned in SAM photographs were also seen on the impact damaged zone. (3) The delamination patterns were affected by the ply-angle, the dimensions of the specimen, and the boundary conditions. (4) The impact damaged zone showed zone showed the delamination on the interfacial boundaries, transverse shear cracks of the surface layer, and bending cracks of the bottom layer.r.r.r.

  • Moisture damage of asphalt pavements can usually occur because of the loss of adhesion and cohesion between the asphalt binder and aggregate in the asphalt mixture due to presence of water. And this is one of the causes that is effect on the main distress of asphalt pavement. The objective of this study is to find out moisture damage characteristics of asphalt pavement. Effects of this study changes of the material properties and resistance characteristics of moisture damage on the asphalt mixtures under various temperatures and repeated immersion using indirect tensile test and modify Lottman test were evaluated during this study. The asphalt mixtures were produced using straight asphalt binder, SBS modified asphalt binder and aggregates. The material properties (resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, failure energy and $DCSE_f$) of the asphalt mixtures were generally decreased with increasing to moisture damage caused by the number of repeated immersion. The decrease ratios of material properties by repeated immersion on SBS modified asphalt mixtures were lower than those of straight asphalt mixtures at all three test temperatures. As a conclusion, current criterion for evaluation moisture damage of asphalt mixtures is difficult for using distinction standard because of the limited evaluation criterion with one time immersion and single material property. Based on this research, to evaluate long term moisture damage on asphalt mixtures, material property tests of various kinds with repeated immersion test are considered.

  • Steel structures are threatened to reduce load-carrying capacity as the cross section is decreased by corrosion. However, there has been no method in definitely evaluating residual load-carrying capacity and the effect of corrosion to the load-carrying capacity of steel. This study evaluated tensile residual load-carrying capacity of corroded steel plates by using tensile tests of specimens, which were selected from the web of temporary structure's main beam. After the surface shapes were measured and tensile tests were examined, the rust of 21 corroded specimens was, first of all, removed using a chemical method. From the tensile test result, which of reference specimens that was picked off at the flange of the same main 13-mm-thick beam and corroded specimens were based, surface geometry and correlation with the reduction of corroded thickness and strain, yield strength or tensile strength was established as constant numbers. Effective thickness of corroded steel with irregular cross sections could be calculated using average residual thickness and standard deviation. The irregular cross sections could be the evaluated tensile strength that is equalized to non-corroded uniform steel's regardless of corrosion. Also, reasonable measuring intervals of residual thickness could be proposed by using this result to apply for executive work.

  • Mechanical and impact properties of stitched S2 glass fiber reinforced polyester woven laminates composites have been studied. Laminates were stitched using Kevlar 49 thread with 1/2, 1, and 2 inch stitch spacing. Tensile and 3-point bending tests haute been performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of stitched and unstitched laminates. Impact tests at applied energy of 234.7J were performed to examine the impact behavior and toughness changes of the specimen. The same specimens were also tested repeatedly at low impact energy level of 110.2J for 3 times to evaluate damage tolerance properties. The tensile and 3-point bending test results showed that one inch spacing specimen had the highest tensile and flexural strength. It also showed the highest energy absorption capability and the best damage tolerance property at the repeated impact test. The half inch spacing specimen showed the lowest tensile strength and energy absorption property at the impact energy level of 234.7J, even though it had the highest frequency of stitching thread.
