  • The purpose of this study is to analysis the type of cited materials, dependence ratio of foreign information of domestic researchers, and to predicts half-life of life science for the collection development of libraries and user friendly information services. The journal articles was extracted from five subjects-medical science, pharmacy, food science, agricultural science, microbiology. In result, it was found that it citing the scholarly journal most plentifully, and dependence ratio of foreign information of domestic researchers was high most the microbiology. And then, half-life of life science was found 8.98 in agricultural science, and 7.11 in food science, and 6.96 in pharmacy, and so on.

  • This article aims to help decide until when a library has to hold journal volumes for user efficiency by measuring the value of academic journals to find the frequency of journal use over the elapsed time based on the half-life index-number of literature obsolescence by Burton & Kebler. Four general subjects categories in science was analyzed. (4 detailed subjects in mathematics, 12 in physics, 12 in chemistry, 14 in technology was selected.) As a result, citation ages are $20{\sim}29$ years in mathematics, $8{\sim}11$ in physics, chemistry, and technology. Average half-life indexes are 11.22 year in mathematics, 7.5 in physics, 8.4 in chemistry, and 8.88 in technology.

  • This study identifies the interdisciplinary structures of 8 scientific disciplines in science and technology using the data from journal citations and web links, and compares the interdisciplinarity among these scientific disciplines. The interdisciplinarity refers to interdisciplinary connections among scientific fields and the degree of interdisciplinarity is measured by the number of associated fields and the rate of self-citation. A re-arranged classification scheme for science and technology was adopted to identify subject categories of journals and web pages. Web link analysis revealed a few additional interdisciplinary connections that were not identified by the journal citation analysis, thus demonstrating that it is useful means of investigating the interdisciplinarity of scientific fields. Besides, in most of the cases the interdisciplinarity of the engineering fields were found greater than that of the fields in natural sciences in both analyses.

  • The author, after introducing the concept of de re belief and discussing de re/de dicto ambiguity in belief context and modal context, concludes that modal sentences of Korean language does not show any distinctive traits against English. He, after discussing this ambiguity in negative sentence a la Russell, tries to show that Korean provides two way of negation construction, one of which corresponds to de re negation (primary occurrence in Russell's terms). De re reading makes referentially transparent context, thus permits substitutions of identicals salva veritate; De dicto reading does not. Korean ending 'rago', used with quotation verbs, speech act verbs and cognitive attitude verbs, deserves some attention in that it permits de re sentences in addition to de re/de dicto ambiguous sentences. 'Rago' also makes speaker's commitment to the content of the intensionally contained clause 'neutral', in contrast with other Korean endings such as 'um/im' and 'raneun gut' which make speaker's positive commitment. This explains why the maxim of western epistemology that knowledge presupposes truth does not hold in Korean 'rago' sentences.

  • The purpose of this study was to Identify the similarities and differences between the hyperlinking practice of scholarly e-journal authors and conventional citing practice. 230 scholarly e-journal articles containing at least two hyperlinks and their authors were selected as the sample for the study. A mail questionnaire survey of the authors of the sampled e-journal articles was conducted (with a response rate of $70\%$) to collect quantitative data on the authors' hyperlinking motivations. In addition, a content analysis of the e-journal articles and the source documents hyperlinked in the articles was conducted to examine the patterns of hyperlinks. A comparison between the quantitative results of this hyperlinking study and previous citation studies was made. The results revealed not only some similarities but also several significant differences between them.

  • Nowadays the information environment enables users to access the traditional library collection as well as various digital information resources. In this rapidly changing environment, the use of digital information resources such as web sites, data, and homepages has increased. In this research, highly-cited authors' research outcomes as well as the research outcomes of the people, who cited the highly-cited authors' works, were extracted then compared with information stored in the medical colleges' digital libraries and the academic information portals in the clinical medicine area by using the citation information provided by Essential Science Indicators from ISI Web of knowledge. Out of 10,000 authors,146 people's homepages, which present research outcomes, were analyzed. The research outcomes listed in the homepages included journal papers, monographs, conference proceedings, and lecture notes. About 15% of the journal papers, 32% of the monographs, 48% of the conference proceedings, and 100% of lecture notes were accessible only through the homepages. The research outcomes accessible from the homepages were almost analogous to the ones available through the medical college's digital libraries and the academic information portals. Therefore, the digital library collection will be improved and expanded quantitatively and qualitatively by collecting and using the information in the homepages of the prestigious researchers.

  • This study describes the growth, contribution and impact of research carried out by University of Mysore scientists in science and technology. It indicates the patterns of communications of university scientists and studies the extent of concentration and scattering of their research output in different journals. It also analyses the strong and weak areas of university research, their growth rate and impact in terms of average citations received. It also studies the output and impact of research under different existing subject departments of the university and analyses the international collaborative share of research output at the overall level as well as across various subjects, indicating also the major countries involved in international collaboration. It describes the share and characteristics of select high cited papers and the top productive authors.

  • In order to ascertain disciplinary differences in publication patterns that can help improve assessment of research performance in Korea, we analyzed the bibliometric data of six disciplines from Korea Citation Index. Results showed differences in research size, competitiveness, productivity, impact, and collaboration among disciplines. Disciplines in science were the largest in terms of author and institution followed by humanities and social science, but humanities produced the most publications per author, followed by social science and science disciplines. Sociology publications received most citation per paper but humanities received most citations per author, which was greatly influenced by the number of co-authors per paper. Distribution of author counts per paper varied widely across disciplines. Humanities were dominated by single-author publications, whereas the majority of publications in sciences were co-authored. The study also highlighted differences in citation lag time and illustrated differences in distribution and impact of core authors and institutions across disciplines.
