현대과학에 의하여 밝혀진 고려인삼의 약리효능을 보면 뇌 기능 개선, 통증감소, 암 예방 및 항암작용, 면역기능 항진, 간 기능 개선, 항당뇨, 혈압 조절기능, 항피로, 항 스트레스, 여성 갱년기장애 개선, 남성 발기부전 개선, 항 산화, 항 노화 등에 관한 효능을 들 수가 있으며, 고려인삼의 효능성분으로서는 ginsenosides(인삼사포닌), 페놀화합물, 폴리아세틸렌화합물, 다당체 특히 산성다당체, 펩타이드 등이 주류를 이루고 있다. 효능성분 중에는 특히 ginsenosides에 관한 연구가 많이 수행되었는 바, 고려인삼이 타국삼에 비하여 다양한 종류의 ginsenosides가 함유되어 있다는 것이 판명되었다.

Several publications in scientific journals affirming that ginseng could be toxic and have harmful effects on the organism, gave us reason to undertake extensive investigations as to the toxicity of the standardized ginseng extract G115, Acute and chronic toxicity, teratogenicity, carcinogenicity, its action on the cardiovascular and the hormonal system have been studied. The data obtained, which represent five years of research, are confirmed by clinical results: The standardized ginseng extract G115 is absolutely safe, no toxic actions or side effects were observed.

인삼의 효능 및 유효성분에 관한 수많은 문헌 및 연구사례가 보고 되어 있음에도 불구하고 인삼의 주성분인 ginsenosides의 합성경로나 그와 관련된 유전인자에 대하여서는 거의 밝혀져 있지 않다. 인삼의 생리적 특성규명 및 ginsenosides의 생합성 경로를 밝히기 위한 한 방법으로써 프로테옴 분석이 시도되었다. 본지에서는 고려인삼 (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer)을 대상으로 이루어진 최근의 프로테옴 분석 및 이차 대사산물의 생산과 연관된 유전인자를 찾기 위하여 이루어진 인삼의 기능유전체 분석을 소개하고자 한다.
