  • The effects of Mn and Co additions up to 0.6 and 2.0 wt% respectively and the amount of cold-rolled reduction on the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of powder rolled Fe-Ni Invar strips were investigated. The compacted strips were sintered, homogenized and cold-rolled to the final thickness of 0.8 mm, 0.65 mm and 0.4 mm. All the strips reached full density except the case of 0.8 mm sample which has a very few porosities. The interstitials which are well known to increase TEC were minimized to the level of 10 rpm C,5 and N,0 by the processing. TEC was found to decrease by increasing the cold reduction. The Mn content had little effect on the TEC. But in Fe-Ni-Co system, TEC decreased with Co content up to 0.4 wt% and then increased, yielding the minimum value of $0.2 {\times} 10-6/^{\circ}C$ at 0.4 wt% Co. This value is much lower than that of commercial Invar product. Such effect of Co is considered to be related with the maxiumum spontaneous- magnetostriction effect.

  • Precipitation characteristics of the Fe-36Ni based high strength Invar alloy for power transmission wire was investigated in this study. High strength can be obtained in this alloy through solution hardening, precipitation hardening and strain hardening by cold working. In the present study, ingots of Fe-36Ni based Invar alloys with the contents of C, Mo and V varied. Microstructure observations by OM, SEM, and TEM were carried out to validate the simulation results. BCC phase and $FeNi_3$ phase are also expected at lower temperatures below $500^{\circ}C$. Aging treatments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 400 to $900^{\circ}C$ for time intervals from 3 min to 100hrs. Peak aging condition was obtained as $400^{\circ}C$ and 1 hr. With temperature increased, peak strength was decreased abruptly. Microstructure observation was conducted by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.

  • Femto-second laser ablation with the various feed velocities of the Invar alloy and the micro surface milling for the processing condition were studied. We used a regenerative amplified Ti:sapphire laser with a 1kHz repetition rate, 184fs pulse duration time and 785nm wavelength. Femto-second laser pulse was irradiated on the Invar alloy with the air blowing at the condition of various laser peak powers and feed velocities. An ablation characteristic according to feed velocity of the Invar alloy was appeared as the non-linear type at different zone of energy fluence. The micro surface milling of the Invar alloy using a mapping method was investigated. The optimal condition of micro surface milling was laser peak power of 22.8mW, feed velocity of 1 mm/s, beam gap of $1{\mu}m$. With the optimal processing condition, the fine rectangular shape without burr and thermal damage was achieved. Using the femto-second laser system, it demonstrates excellent tool for micro surface milling of the Invar alloy without heat effects and poor edge.

  • We investigated the magnetic properties of High Flux-type $Ni_{x}Fe_{100-x}$(x=40∼50, wt.%) permalloy powders and dust cores. The powder was prepared by conventional gas atomization in mass production scale. At the composition of $Ni_{x}Fe_{55}$, saturation magnetization was maximum. In case of lower Ni content than X=45, the $M_{s}$, decreased largely with the decrease in Ni content, which is due to the invar effect. The permeability of compressed powder cores increased with the decrease in Ni content, which was considered to be due to the decrease in the magnetostriction. In addition, the dust core with Ni=45% showed the lowest core loss because of the increase in electrical resistivity leading to the low eddy current loss. From the better frequency dependence of permeability, larger Q value and superior DC bias characteristics of Ni=45% than those of Ni=50% core, it was confirmed that the 45%Ni-55%Fe powder alloy was better material for the dust core than commercial High Flux core materials.
